Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma disguised as an external hemorrhoid.

This article describes a patient who presented to the ED with persistent nausea and vomiting, constipation, weight loss, and a new complaint of an external hemorrhoid and hematochezia with stooling. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation included imaging studies that showed extensive metastatic disease but did not identify a primary neoplasm. Biopsy of the external hemorrhoid revealed small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the anal canal.

Gastric goblet cell carcinoma concurrent with a neuroendocrine tumor.

Goblet cell carcinoma, a tumor that is assumed to originate from crypt base stem cells, is a distinct type of tumor, that occurs typically in the appendix, however, extra-appendiceal locations were also described in few cases. We herein present a unique case of a 48-year-old male with a diagnosis of primary gastric Goblet cell carcinoma that was initially discovered at the time of an endoscopy performed to evaluate an unremitting abdominal pain that was accompanied by remarkable weight loss; four polypoid fragments of the gastric mucosa were sent for histopathologic examination which showed a

A case of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater.

BACKGROUND: Gastroenteric neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) account for 6.2% of gastroenteric neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), and only 1% or less of gastroenteric NETs occur in the ampulla of Vater (AoV). Clinical features of NEC of the AoV remain obscure. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man visited a general practitioner because of jaundice, and an abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a tumor of 11 mm in diameter, which was enhanced in the arterial phase at the duodenal papilla, with dilation of the upstream bile duct. Gastrointestinal scope revealed an unexposed tumor

[A Case of Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Ampulla of Vater].

An 80-year-old women admitted to our hospital with jaundice. Abdominal contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed an enhanced tumor, measuring 10 mm, at the duodenal ampulla. Upper endoscopy showed a submucosal tumor-like lesion at the duodenal ampulla. Immunohistochemical findings showed positive for chromogranin A and synaptophysin, and neuroendocrine carcinoma was diagnosed. Subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy with regional lymph node dissection was performed. The final diagnosis was large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma(LCNEC). Multiple metastases of liver, lung and bone were occurre

Neuroendocrine Cell Hyperplasia of Infancy. Clinical Score and Comorbidities.

Rationale: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) is an important form of children's interstitial and diffuse lung disease for which the diagnostic strategy has evolved. The prevalence of comorbidities in NEHI that may influence treatment has not been previously assessed. Objectives: To evaluate a previously unpublished NEHI clinical score for assistance in diagnosis of NEHI and to assess comorbidities in NEHI.Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of 199 deidentified patients with NEHI from 11 centers. Data were collected in a centralized Research Electronic Data Capture

Lung and airway shape in neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) is a rare lung disease associated with significant air trapping. Although chest CT is crucial in establishing a diagnosis, CT and biopsy findings do not reveal airway abnormalities to explain the air trapping. OBJECTIVE: We compared lung and airway morphology obtained from chest CT scans in children with NEHI and control children. In the children with NEHI, we explored relationships between lung and airway shape and lung function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of children with NEHI who underwent clinic

Sleeping chILD: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy and polysomnography.

OBJECTIVES: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) is a children's interstitial and diffuse lung disease of unknown etiology that presents in infancy with characteristic findings of tachypnea, retractions, crackles, and hypoxemia. At the present, the mainstay of treatment is oxygen supplementation to normalize oxygen saturations and decrease work of breathing. There are characteristic pulmonary function, radiographic, and histologic findings, but polysomnography (PSG) data has not been reported. We sought to report PSG data and implications for management and treatment of NEHI patie

Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Nasopharynx: A Pediatric Case.

Neuroendocrine tumors are rare, preferentially located in the gastrointestinal tract or in the lungs. We present the case of a 9-year-old child, presenting with a tissue mass involving the nasopharynx and associated with multiple pulmonary and bone metastases. The immunohistochemical analysis showed a proliferation of large tumor cells stained with Chromogranin A and Synaptophysin. The diagnosis of multimetastatic large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma was made. This tumor is infrequent in this location and particularly in children. This case describes the pathologic aspects and immunohistochemic

[Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the nasopharynx: A case report].

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the head and neck is a rare entity. The parotid gland is the most commonly affected site. A nasopharyngeal site has not been previously described. We report a 35-year-old patient who consulted for tinnitus and nasal obstruction. The assessment found a nasopharyngeal tumour T4N0M0. The patient underwent 6 cycles of chemotherapy based on VP16 and cisplatin, followed by radiotherapy at a dose of 70 Gy to the nasopharynx and 50 Gy to the neck. The evolution was marked by clinical improvement and radiological stability. Six months after the end of treatment, the patient

[Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus; report of a case].

A 55-year-old man presented with an anterior mediastinal tumor, which was detected on a computed tomography scan for close investigation of blood-stained sputum. Operation was performed with the clinical diagnosis of a thymic carcinoma and the tumor was resected completely. The pathological findings revealed Masaoka stage IV, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus. The patients received postoperative chemotherapy and is well without recurrence for 10 months after the surgery.

[Primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder].

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder is rare. In the last five years, we have had the opportunity to see this type of cancer in an 88-year-old and in a 66-year-old males. In both cases, transurethral resection of carcinoma of the bladder was carried out. In the first case, urothelial carcinoma was detected and deeper in the bladder wall, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma structures were found. In the second case, the bladder was only infiltrated with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Both tumors expressed NSE, CD56 and synaptophysin. Other markers, such as those agai

[Neuroendocrine small-cell bladder cancer: our experience].

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine bladder cancer is extremely rare, with an estimated incidence of 0.35-0.70% of all bladder tumors. The small-cell carcinoma represents the most frequent histologic variant described. Small-cell carcinoma is an epithelial tumor associated with a more aggressive behavior and poorer prognosis than transitional cell bladder carcinoma. The overall survival rate at 5 years does not exceed 8%. At the time of presentation 59% of patients have clinical stage >T2 and 56% show metastatic disease. In 50% of the patients, fatal progression occurs within 6 months. Local recurren

Synchronous large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the colon.

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the colon is a rare entity with a prognosis that is usually poor due to the high likelihood of early metastasis. A 61-year-old man had surgery for colon cancer of the transverse colon and cecum. Microscopic examination of the tumor showed that the location was the proximal transverse colon, with small nests containing rosettes and palisading patterns of large tumor cells with faintly granular cytoplasm. The immunohistochemistry was positive for synaptophysin and chromogranins. The tumors were diagnosed as a large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the colon

Everolimus in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are uncommon malignancies, highly resistant to chemotherapy, that have emerged as attractive platforms for evaluating novel targeted regimens. Everolimus is an oral rapamycin derivative within the mammalian target of rapamycin class of agents. Preclinical series have shown that everolimus exhibits anticancer effects in RCC and NET cell lines. A phase 3 placebo-controlled study in advanced clear-cell RCC, known as RECORD-1 (for "REnal Cell cancer treatment with Oral RAD001 given Daily"), documented that everolimus stabilizes tumor progr

Primary pure large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ovary.

We report a case of a 73-year-old female with a rare simultaneous occurrence of three tumors: ovarian carcinoma, endometrial carcinoma, and breast carcinoma. The ovarian tumor was a primary pure large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Grossly, the left ovary was enlarged by a solid tumor that measured 9 x 7 x 7 cm. Histologically, the tumor consisted of large cells with irregular hyperchromatic nuclei and a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm. In some areas, the tumor cells were arranged in solid sheets; however, the predominant pattern was cribriform and solid-alveolar, with palisaded tumo

Combined large cell neuroendocrine and endometrioid carcinoma of the endometrium.

We present the surgical and pathological findings and follow-up of 5 women diagnosed with combined endometrioid and high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma of large cell type (LCNEC) arising in the endometrium. The mean age of the women was 75 years (range, 50-88 years). Of the 5 tumors, 4 formed polypoid endometrial masses associated with extensive lymphovascular involvement of the myometrium by neoplastic cells. A single endometrial tumor was formed by LCNEC alone, and 4 tumors were composite with varying proportions formed by endometrioid (4/5) and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (1/5). In

[A case of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in a patient with sarcoidosis].

A 60-year-old female smoker presented with bloody sputum and back pain. A computed tomographic (CT) scan of the chest revealed a mass lesion in S(1+2) of the left lung and hilarmediastinal lymphadenopathy. TBLB revealed small cell carcinoma. At first, we thought that the patient's clinical staging was c-T4N2M0 IIIB disease. However, it was pointed out she had had hilar-mediastinal lymphadenopathy 7 years previously. Though FDG-PET revealed an increased uptake in the hilar-mediastinal lymph node, she was determined to have surgery. The resected specimen revealed the swollen lymph nodes to be sa
