Aspects in neurofibromatosis from the viewpoint of dermatology.

The neurofibromatoses are a heterogenous set of conditions having clinical manifestations such as skin, nervous system, bone and eye disorders. The clinical pictures of the patients will obviously differ, and there is considerable variation of manifestations even within a family. During the last twenty-five years, one thousand and two hundred patients with neurofibromatosis were personally examined. Almost all our patients had classical von Recklinghausen disease. But in addition to these cases, there are 28 cases of NF-2 and 10 patients which we call multiple neurilemmomatosis. Also, there ar…

Challenges associated with parenting youth with neurofibromatosis: A qualitative investigation.

Parents of children with the neurofibromatoses (NF; neurofibromatosis 1, neurofibromatosis 2, and schwannomatosis) are at an increased risk for emotional and physical health problems. This study aimed to determine parents' perceptions of stressors associated with parenting a child with NF in order to inform the development of a resiliency intervention. We conducted three live video semi structured focus groups with parents of youth with NF (N = 30), which were subsequently transcribed and coded using qualitative content analysis. Parents reported heightened stress associated with the child's e…

Clinical epidemiology of NF2-related schwannomatosis.

The epidemiology of NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2) has only been possible to delineate after the separation of NF2 from the more common nerve sheath-predisposing tumor condition NF1 in 1987. Two groups have published data on the birth incidence and prevalence of NF2 in the United Kingdom and Finland. The most recent estimate from the United Kingdom for NF2 cases ascertained from the Manchester region of England (population=4.8 million) and from across the United Kingdom gave a point prevalence of 1 in 50,500 and a birth incidence of 1 in 27,956. NF2 usually presents with bilateral vestibula

Neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis - An update.

Neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder with 100 % penetrance associated with pathogenic variants of the NF2 gene on the long arm of chromosome 22. It was previously known as central neurofibromatosis and neurofibromatosis type 2. NF2-SWN has a global incidence of about 1 in 50,000. This disorder is characterized by the formation of multiple types of central nervous system tumors. While bilateral vestibular schwannomas affect more than 95 % of individuals with NF2-SWN, meningiomas, ependymomas, gliomas, other schwannomas, and ophth

Insights into Novel Choroidal and Retinal Clinical Signs in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare inherited neurocutaneous disorder with a major impact on the skin, nervous system and eyes. The ocular diagnostic hallmarks of this disease include iris Lisch nodules, ocular and eyelid neurofibromas, eyelid café-au-lait spots and optic pathway gliomas (OPGs). In the last years, new manifestations have been identified in the ocular district in NF1 including choroidal abnormalities (CAs), hyperpigmented spots (HSs) and retinal vascular abnormalities (RVAs). Recent advances in multi-modality imaging in ophthalmology have allowed for the improved character

Segmental Schwannomatosis of the Lower Extremity - A Case Series.

Segmental schwannomatosis involving a nerve in single limb is uncommon. Schwannomatosis is used to describe a distinct clinicopathological disease of multiple schwannomas without manifestations of neurofibromatosis, and it is termed segmental when a single extremity is involved. Surgery is indicated when there is progressive clinical deterioration or progressive increase in size of the tumors. We present a case series of segmental schwannomatosis involving the lower limb.

Radiographic characteristics of the maxillomandibular complex in neufibromatosis: short communication and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To report radiographic characteristics of a case of a patient with neurofibromatosis involving the maxillomandibular complex and to point out other dental radiographic characteristics that are found in the scientific literature to help the dentist when faced with a case of neurofibromatosis. SHORT COMMUNICATION: Male, 31 years old, referred for radiographic examination. During anamnesis and physical examination, lesions were noted, which were papules and café-au-lait patches larger than 1 cm on the trunk and upper limbs, further to Lisch nodules (brown spots on the iris) and axilla

Dermabrasion and staged excision of facial lesions in a neurofibromatosis case for improvement of facial appearance.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis may present with different skin lesions. Disfiguring lesions on the face might be challenging for the surgeon or clinician to correct and may have adverse effects on patients' social lives, especially in young women. OBJECTIVE: To present the dermabrasion technique combined with serial excisions of a deeper accompanying lesion to treat superficial facial lesions in a young neurofibromatosis patient. METHODS: Dermabrasion was applied to superficial lesions on the face, and staged excision was applied to the deeper lesion located on the forehead. RESULTS: We obta

Superficial femoral vein invasion by a benign neurofibroma in a non-neurofibromatosis patient: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Neurofibromas are benign neural sheath tumors arising from intraneural supporting cells. Such tumors are characteristic of neurofibromatosis Type I (von Recklinghausen disease) but also occur sporadically. Vascular involvement by neurofibromata is rare, but has been described in the past in the context of neurofibromatosis. There is, to our knowledge, no description of vascular involvement by a neurofibroma in a non-neurofibromatosis patient. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old woman presented with a 4 year history of a right thigh mass associated with diffuse lower

Segmental neurofibromatosis.

A 74-year-old man presented with skin-colored nodules in his left antecubital fossa. The lesions had been present for 35 years and were asymptomatic. Nodules elsewhere on the body, cafe-au-lait spots, axillary freckling, and Lisch nodules were absent. No family members had similar nodules. A diagnosis of segmental neurofibromatosis was made, and a biopsy specimen of a nodule showed a neurofibroma. As the patient had no complications of neurofibromatosis 1, no treatment was needed.

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the caecum in a patient with neurofibromatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the large intestine is uncommon. To our knowledge, this condition has not been reported in a patient with neurofibromatosis. CLINICAL PICTURE: In this report, a 66-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis was found to have a large polyp in the caecum. TREATMENT: Right hemicolectomy was performed because of the size of the polyp. OUTCOME: Pathological examination showed that the polyp was an inflammatory fibroid polyp. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should be aware that inflammatory fibroid polyps could be one of the many manifestations of neurofibromatosis
