Hypothalamic function in patients diagnosed as brain dead and its practical consequences.

Some patients who have been diagnosed as "dead by neurologic criteria" continue to exhibit certain brain functions, most commonly, neuroendocrine functions. In this chapter, we review the pathophysiology of brain death that can lead either to neuroendocrine failure or to preserved neuroendocrine functioning. We review the evidence on continued hypothalamic functioning in patients who have been declared "brain dead," examine potential mechanisms that would explain these findings, and discuss how these findings create additional confounds for brain death testing. We conclude by reviewing the evi

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension: a unifying neuroendocrine hypothesis through the adrenal-brain axis.

The clinical syndrome idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), also termed pseudotumor cerebri, consists of symptoms of headache, nausea, vomiting and visual field defects in combination with findings of papilledema. IIH is more commonly seen in overweight women where the rise in intracranial pressure is putatively a consequence of an endocrine-based disturbance of electrolytes. Less frequently, it can also occur in men and in the pediatric age group. Associated risk factors include primary and secondary aldosteronism, pregnancy, recombinant growth hormone (r-GH) therapy, oral contraceptive

[Psychoneuroimmunology--regulation of immunity at the systemic level].

Innate and acquired immune reactions are controlled by their intrinsic regulatory mechanisms, ie. by an array of cytokines that mediate communication among cells of the immune system itself and with other cells and tissues, e. g. in areas of inflammation. In addition, the immune system is also subjected to systemic regulation by the vegetative and endocrine systems since immune cells express receptors for neurotransmitters and hormones. Neuroendocrine signals may enhance or suppress the immune reaction, accelerate or slow it, but do not affect specificity. Various stressful factors, including

Impact of prenatal stress on neuroendocrine programming.

Since life emerged on the Earth, the development of efficient strategies to cope with sudden and/or permanent changes of the environment has been virtually the unique goal pursued by every organism in order to ensure its survival and thus perpetuate the species. In this view, evolution has selected tightly regulated processes aimed at maintaining stability among internal parameters despite external changes, a process termed homeostasis. Such an internal equilibrium relies quite heavily on three interrelated physiological systems: the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems, which function as a

Neuroendocrine control of food intake.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity is a major public health problem and substantially increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular, respiratory problems, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea, as well as certain cancers. The prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing worldwide. However, for individuals weight is regulated within a narrow range. This regulation depends on energy intake (in the form of food) and energy expenditure. Recently, there has been a remarkable increase in our understanding of the homeostatic mechanisms that control food intake and

[MDMA (ecstasy): neuroendocrine and behavioral features].

Long lasting 5HT system impairment has been demonstrated in experimental animals exposed to ecstasy use; MDMA seems to be able to induce behavioral conditioning and reiterated use because of its dopaminergic action. Among behavioral aspects of ecstasy users mood disorders, irritability and difficult in relationships, interpersonal difficulties, high levels of impulsiveness and hostility, high sensation seeking, cognitive and attentive deficit have been reported. A derangement of serotonin system function was reported also in humans exposed to ecstasy, as confirmed by neuroendocrine challenges

Progesterone receptors as neuroendocrine integrators.

Intracellular progesterone receptors (PRs) are ligand-inducible transcription factors that mediate the majority of the effects of progesterone (P) on neuroendocrine functions. During the past decade, evidence has accumulated which suggest that PRs can also be activated independently of P, by signals propagated through membrane-bound receptors to the interior of cells. The activation of PRs by this type of "cross-talk" mechanism has been implicated in the physiological regulation of several important neuroendocrine processes, including estrous behavior and periovulatory hormone secretions. We r

Neuroepithelial bodies and solitary neuroendocrine cells in the lungs of amphibia.

In the lungs of 12 species of Amphibia investigated so far, solitary neuroendocrine (NE) cells, as well as groups of these cells called "neuroepithelial bodies" (NEB), are observed. They occur in the position strategic to monitoring gas composition, mainly in the ciliated epithelium of the apical part of the septa. A great diversity in the structure of NEB is observed. The NE cells and NEB in Amphibia are predominantly of the "closed type," separated from the air space by a thin cytoplasmic layer of ciliated cells, goblet cells or pneumocytes. In two species, Bufo marinus and Ambystoma tigrinu

The anatomy of neurosecretory neurones in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis (L.).

The anatomy of three neurosecretory cell types in the central nervous system (c.n.s.) of the gastropod mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis (L.)- the Dark Green Cells, Yellow Cells and Yellow-green Cells-has been studied by using bright and dark field illumination of material stained for neurosecretion by the Alcian Blue-Alcian Yellow technique. The neuronal geometry of single and groups of neurosecretory cells of the various types has been reconstructed from serial sections, and the likely destination of most of their processes has been determined. Dark Green Cells are monopolar, occur exclusively withi

Vasopressin and brain development: studies using the Brattleboro rat.

Anomalies in hormonal and neurotransmitter status during early stages of brain development, can lead to lifespan alterations in the functioning of central systems. The neuropeptide vasopressin is nowadays recognized as a putative neurotransmitter, after years of study on its neurosecretory hormonal aspect in water metabolism. Since vasopressin is moreover present early in the brain, and has various mitogenic, metabolic and physiological actions, one might expect vasopressin to be of importance for normal brain development as well. Indeed, the absence of brain vasopressin in the Brattleboro mut

Immunogold detection of two neurohormones: the locust ovary maturing parsin and neuroparsin.

The cellular localization of two neurohormones of the locust pars intercerebralis-corpora cardiaca system: the ovary maturing parsin and neuroparsin, was investigated using electron microscopic immunocytochemistry (post-embedding immunogold labelling). The ovary maturing parsin and neuroparsin containing cells were first identified in semithin sections treated by combined histochemical- and immunostaining. The neuroparsin cells were paraldehyde fuchsin positive (A-type cells) and the ovary maturing parsin cells were paraldehyde fuchsin negative when semithin sections were stained with paraldeh

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and the Neuroendocrine System.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus strain SARS-CoV-2 triggered the COVID-19 pandemic with severe economic and social ramifications. As the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the respiratory system becomes more understood, growing evidence suggests that the virus also impacts the homeostasis-regulating neuroendocrine system, potentially affecting other organ systems. SUMMARY: This review explores the interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and the neuroendocrine system, highlighting the effect of this virus on various endocrine glands, including the brain, hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyro

Aging, neuroendocrine function, and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis may occur in both women and men. Osteoporosis is defined as age-related involutional bone loss that exceeds that observed in the normal population of the same age and sex. The hallmark of the disease is a reduction in mineralized bone matrix. Osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease and can be considered the result of impaired coordination of bone remodeling ("resorption/formation coupling"). This review describes the role of systemic hormones and local acting mediators, including neuropeptides and neurotransmitters, in the control of bone turnover. Furthermore the significance of

Neuroendocrine regulation of inflammation and tissue repair by submandibular gland factors.

Interactions between the immune, nervous and endocrine systems are important in inflammation and tissue repair. One neuroendocrine pathway involves polypeptide factors derived from the submandibular glands, whose synthesis and release are controlled by cervical sympathetic nerves. This novel pathway of immune-neuroendocrine communication is the cervical sympathetic trunk-submandibular gland (CST-SMG) axis. Here, Ronald Mathison, Joseph Davison and Dean Befus discuss the contributions of this axis to the neuroendocrine regulation of inflammation and tissue repair.

Grief as a neuroendocrine transition: Insights from perinatal loss.

Grief is an all-encompassing human experience that reverberates across mind, brain, and body. Historically, the scientific study of grief has been rooted primarily in psychological frameworks. Pioneering work has begun to elucidate how attachment loss is encoded not only psychologically but also biologically, and this may be particularly significant during the perinatal period.

Extracellular Matrix-Mediated Neuroendocrine Control of the Thymus.

BACKGROUND: The thymus is the primary lymphoid organ responsible for the generation of a self-tolerant and immunocompetent T-cell repertoire. Its function is not autonomous but is finely tuned by a complex neuroendocrine network, integrating signals from the central nervous system and the endocrine system to modulate thymopoiesis. While the roles of classical hormones and neurotransmitters in regulating thymic epithelial cell (TEC) function and T-cell development are increasingly recognized, the mechanistic pathways by which these signals are integrated within the thymic microenvironment still

Leptin as a modulator of neuroendocrine function in humans.

Leptin, a peptide hormone secreted by adipocytes in proportion of the amount of energy stored in fat, plays a central role in regulating human energy homeostasis. In addition, leptin plays a significant permissive role in the physiological regulation of several neuroendocrine axes, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal, -thyroid, -growth hormone, and -adrenal axes. Decreased levels of leptin, also known as hypoleptinemia, signal to the brain a state of energy deprivation. Hypoleptinemia can be a congenital or acquired condition, and is associated with alterations of the aforementioned a

Friedrich Feyrter: a precise intellect in a diffuse system.

Prior to the contributions of Friedrich Feyrter (1895-1973), the regulation of gastrointestinal function was an ill-understood field that was polarized by a combination of the inability of clinical scientists to perceive the relationship between the cellular elements of 'nervism' and the newly recognized chemical messenger system. Feyrter, an Austrian pathologist of luminescent intellect and possessed of rigorous analytic capacity, recognized the interface of the divergent elements (neural and endocrine) and established the concept of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. His pathological descrip
