Network analysis of item-level neuroticism in recurrent major depression among Korean women.

BACKGROUND: Neuroticism is a core personality trait strongly associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), influencing both its onset and recurrence, and suggesting a persistent vulnerability to depression. METHODS: The study included 2997 women with recurrent MDD and 3046 female controls. Neuroticism was assessed using the Neuroticism scale of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Networks were estimated using the Ising model, community structures derived through Exploratory Graph Analysis, and stability tested via bootstrapping. Network Comparison Tests evaluated structural and connecti…

Neuroticism and ethical risk perception among employees: Neurostructural correlates in the left precuneus.

Prior research using psychometric measures has yielded mixed results regarding the relationship between neuroticism and ethical risk-taking. Considering the pivotal role of ethical risk perception in influencing both ethical risk-taking and broader organizational outcomes, it is essential to explore its connection with neuroticism and the neural mechanisms underlying this link. This study employed voxel-based morphometry analysis of structural MRI data to investigate the neural correlates of ethical risk perception, measured by gray matter volume (GMV), and its association with neuroticism in …

Neuroticism modulates the qualitative effects of inferior parietal tDCS on negatively-valenced memories.

For individuals with increased levels of neuroticism, experiencing criticism or receiving negative feedback has been associated with worse psychological and cognitive outcomes. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can change cognitive processes in clinical populations. We bilaterally stimulated the posterior inferior parietal lobule (pIPL), a critical superficial node of the default model network. We investigated how baseline neuroticism modulates the impact of bilateral tDCS to pIPL on qualitative measures of memory after hearing criticism, hypothesizing that cathodal stimulation of…

Rumination Moderates the Association between Neuroticism, Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in Indian Women.

BACKGROUND: The higher prevalence of depressive symptoms among women demands an in-depth exploration of every possible mechanism through which depressive symptoms may prevail. Identifying any malleable mechanism may open a new pathway through which such symptoms could be targeted. We explored the association between neuroticism, rumination, anxiety, and depressive symptoms and tested a moderated mediation model with anxiety as a mediator in the relationship between neuroticism and depressive symptoms, and rumination as a moderator of the effect of neuroticism on anxiety. METHOD: This cross-se…

Personality and Grief-Related Panic Attacks: Analysis of Neuroticism, Worry, and Anxiety Sensitivity.

Grief-related panic attacks (GRPAs) are a relatively common yet debilitating psychological reaction to loss, the mechanisms of which remain poorly understood among scholars. The purpose of this study was to identify the personality traits that underlie GRPAs in a sample of 314 bereaved adults. The results indicate that GRPAs were relatively common (55.4%) and that anxiety sensitivity uniquely predicted both frequency and impairment associated with these kinds of attacks, while taking into account the effects of neuroticism, trait worry, grief, and gender. Findings suggest that anxiety sensitiv…

Neuroticism and Frontal EEG Asymmetry Correlated With Dynamic Facial Emotional Processing in Adolescents.

The aim of this research was to investigate the link between resting frontal EEG asymmetry, neuroticism and the valence of emotional face processing in adolescents. Fifty right-handed adolescents (50% male; mean age = 14.20, SD = 1.97) were selected from schools in Mashhad. In order to investigate variables, we used BFQ-C, ADFES-BIV, and EEG. All data were analyzed using SPSS 22. The results showed that neuroticism correlates with the valences of fear, disgust, sadness, and surprise, but not with happiness, anger, and neutral faces. Furthermore, it was found that N was significantly positively…

Fearfulness, neuroticism/anxiety, and COMT Val158Met in long-term fear conditioning and extinction.

Individual differences in long-term stability of fear memories are of potential relevance for stable dispositions related to threat processing, such as neuroticism/anxiety and fearfulness. As previous research suggests a prominent role of dopamine for the retention of conditioned and extinguished fear, dopaminergic gene polymorphisms may also relate to individual differences in fear stability. While the COMT Val158Met polymorphism causes individual differences in prefrontal dopamine, its associations with human long-term fear extinction are currently unknown. Here, n = 30/29/28 healthy male Va…

Genome-wide analysis of over 106 000 individuals identifies 9 neuroticism-associated loci.

Neuroticism is a personality trait of fundamental importance for psychological well-being and public health. It is strongly associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and several other psychiatric conditions. Although neuroticism is heritable, attempts to identify the alleles involved in previous studies have been limited by relatively small sample sizes. Here we report a combined meta-analysis of genome-wide association study (GWAS) of neuroticism that includes 91 370 participants from the UK Biobank cohort, 6659 participants from the Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study (GS…

Poor decision making among older adults is related to elevated levels of neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: A well-studied index of reasoning and decision making is the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). The IGT possesses many features important … and the NEO Five-Factory Inventory. RESULTS: In the older adults, but not the younger, higher NEO neuroticism was associated with poorer IGT performance. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings are discussed in the context of how stress may impact cognitive performance and cause dysfunction of neural systems in the brain important for decision making.

Stressful Life Events and Neuroticism among Chinese Women with Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with a high incidence of stressful life events (SLEs) and neuroticism. However, the impact of SLEs and neuroticism on the recurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to identify the potential causal relationship between SLEs, neuroticism, and depression recurrence. METHODS: This study included 5561 female patients with recurrent MDD (ages 30-60) and 4257 healthy volunteers (ages 40-60) from the China, Oxford, and Virginia Commonwealth University Experimental Research on Genetic Epidemiology (CONVERGE) study. We compar…

Longitudinal associations between childhood victimization and neuroticism from middle childhood to early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-sectional and unidirectional longitudinal studies have identified positive associations between childhood victimization and neuroticism in children. However, these studies have not simultaneously examined multiple common sources of childhood victimization (family abuse, teacher abuse, and peer victimization) in relation to neuroticism nor have they distinguished between- and within-person effects. Moreover, the moderating role of child sex in their associations has yet to be fully evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the within-person longitudinal associations …

Association of Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder with Trait Neuroticism and Mental Health Symptoms.

Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) is considered rare in hallucinogen users although there are conflicting reports about its incidence and prevalence. HPPD may be more common in those with trait neuroticism. In this study, we invited hallucinogen and other drug users to complete an online questionnaire about their use of hallucinogens, their experience of HPPD symptoms, and their trait neuroticism and mental health symptoms. We received 802 responses with 415 of these containing adequate data for further analysis. 39.7% of responders reported symptoms corresponding to Type I HP…

Reciprocal effects of personality and general distress: Neuroticism vulnerability is stronger than scarring.

Internalizing (anxiety and depressive) disorders, and the symptoms that comprise them, are known for being chronic and recurrent. Neuroticism, reflecting dispositional tendencies toward negative affect, is a personality trait that bears durable cross-sectional and prospective associations with internalizing symptoms. There are also indications that extraversion, consisting of tendencies such as the heightened experience of positive emotion, is associated with these symptoms. Some investigators have posited that the experience of internalizing symptoms leaves residual effects, or scars, on pers…

Prefrontal cortex activity triggered by affective faces exposure and its relationship with neuroticism.

The emotional processing of affective faces is an essential element of social relationships. Individual differences in personality traits such as neuroticism can influence how we manage these interactions. The objective of this study was to analyze changes in prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity in response to visual exposure to affective faces, and to ascertain whether changes in PFC activity were related to scores in neuroticism, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and dependence facets. Fifty-two healthy undergraduate female students participated in the present study. Results showed …

Threat-related amygdala functional connectivity is associated with 5-HTTLPR genotype and neuroticism.

Communication between the amygdala and other brain regions critically regulates sensitivity to threat, which has been associated with risk for mood and affective disorders. The extent to which these neural pathways are genetically determined or correlate with risk-related personality measures is not fully understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we evaluated independent and interactive effects of the 5-HTTLPR genotype and neuroticism on amygdala functional connectivity during an emotional faces paradigm in 76 healthy individuals. Functional connectivity between left amygdala an…
