Blue rubber bleb nevus: an uncommon cause of intestinal intussusception.

UNLABELLED: The blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome or Bean syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by cutaneous and gastrointestinal vascular malformations. A 5-year-old girl with Bean syndrome hospitalized in a pediatric unit came under our observation with abdominal pain and vomiting. An X-ray of the abdomen showed an intestinal occlusion and an ultrasonography showed a suspected intestinal invagination. She underwent emergency laparoscopic surgery using three trocars. Laparoscopy revealed a huge ascitis and multiple vascular lesions located on the loops and on the parietal peritoneum, and we

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: surgical eradication of gastrointestinal bleeding.

OBJECTIVE: We report the largest clinical experience to date of surgically treated patients with blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: BRBNS is a rare congenital disorder presenting with multifocal venous malformations of the skin, soft tissues, and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Patients with BRBNS develop anemia from chronic GI bleeding, and require lifelong treatment with iron and blood transfusions. An aggressive surgical approach to treat the GI venous malformations of BRBNS has been considered unlikely to be successful because of the large number of lesions, th

Malignant cellular blue nevus: a clinicopathological study of 6 cases.

BACKGROUND: Malignant cellular blue nevus (MCBN) is a rare entity due to the malignant transformation of a preexisting cellular blue nevus (CBN). OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical and pathologic features of 6 patients with MCBN are described. RESULTS: Three tumors were located on the scalp, 2 on the trunk and 1 on the neck. The lesions, present from birth or childhood, had enlarged rapidly in the last months before excision. Histologically, there was a dermal proliferation of spindle and epithelioid atypical melanocytic cells. Some of them were heavily pigmented. Numerous atypical mitoses

[Nevus of Ota. Presentation of a case associated with a cellular blue nevus with suspected malignant degeneration and review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota is a melanotic pigmentary disorder ("dermal melanocytosis"), mostly congenital or acquired, involving the skin innervated by the first and the second branch of the trigeminal nerve, hence its descriptive label of "nevus fuscus coerulaeus ophthalmic and maxillaris". In more than half of patients this condition is associated with "ocular melanocytosis" ("melanosis oculi") involving the conjunctiva, the sclera, the uveal tract and possibly the optic nerve. In some cases a condition of "orbital melanocytosis" with involvement of orbital fat and periosteum by dendritic mela

Common blue nevus of the uterine cervix: case report and review.

A case of common blue nevus of the uterine cervix in a 32-year-old woman is reported. This lesion was incidentally discovered in a hysterectomy performed for leiomyomas; in addition, a right ovarian benign serous cyst was found. The common blue nevus was restricted to the stroma of the endocervix and was characterized by clusters of dendritic melanocytes with benign histologic features. These cells were positive for melanin, S100, and HMB45. Electron microscopy disclosed melanosomes and premelanosomes. The differential diagnosis with other pigmented lesions, particularly with malignant melanom

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome in a patient with ataxia and dementia.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS), an uncommon disorder characterized by cavernous hemangiomas, most often of the skin and gastrointestinal tract, is usually diagnosed during childhood and young adulthood. We made this diagnosis in an octogenarian referred to a geriatric medicine clinic because of concerns about his ability to live independently. Ataxia, dementia, focal neurologic signs, and bluish/purplish vascular nodules on his lips, buccal mucosa, tongue, chest, and neck were noted on physical examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an old left parietal infarction, mul

Epithelioid blue nevus: neoplasm Sui generis or variation on a theme?

The epithelioid blue nevus has recently been associated with the Carney complex, which is characterized by myxomas, spotty skin pigmentation, endocrine overactivity, and schwannomas. Using the general criteria proposed by Carney and Ferreiro, similar lesions were identified in 33 patients with no evidence of the Carney complex. Those lesions presented on the face, trunk and extremities of 15 males and 18 females. The mean age was 35 years, much older than those in the Carney complex (mean 16.3 years). Clinical diagnoses included malignant blue nevus, atypical nevus, melanoma, congenital nevus,

[Intestinal hemorrhage for 21 years in a case of blue nevus syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of gastrointestinal bleeding due to a blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome undiagnosed for 21 years. CASE: A woman of 28 years of age suffered chronic gastrointestinal bleeding starting at seven years of age. During these 21 years she received various treatment with oral and parenteral iron and, in addition, four blood transfusions. We found her to be anemic with 7.8 g/dL of hemoglobin (HB), iron deficient and with skin lesions in tongue, right hand and lower extremities. A skin biopsy diagnosed the lesions as cavernous hemangiomas. Multiple intestinal hemangiomas seen

A rare case of multifocal prostatic blue nevus: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Prostatic blue nevus (PBN) is an exceptionally rare benign melanocytic lesion of the prostate, usually discovered incidentally. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old Iranian male in otherwise good health presented to a urology clinic with an elevated PSA of 5.8 and obstructive symptoms. Digital rectal examination was normal. Trans-rectal ultrasound-guided biopsy revealed blue nevus in 4 out of 12 cores. Histology showed pigmented spindle cells in stroma confirmed by Fontana-Masson stain. Immunohistochemistry was positive for S100, HMB45, and Melan-A. No malignancy was

Conjunctival blue nevus in a child - Case report and review of literature.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of a conjunctival blue nevus in a child. OBSERVATIONS: A 10-year-old girl underwent an excisional biopsy for an atypical growing melanocytic conjunctival lesion. The diagnosis of a conjunctival blue nevus was confirmed on histopathology. We describe the histopathology and the anterior segment optical coherence tomography features of a blue nevus in a 10-year-old child along with a review of literature. CONCLUSION AND IMPORTANCE: Conjunctival blue nevus is rare and has rarely been reported in a child. Multimodal imaging may help document lesion progression. This

Cellular blue nevus of the uterus: a case report and review of the literature.

Cellular blue nevus is extremely rare in the gynecologic tract with only 2 cases reported thus far, one in the myometrium and the other in the cervix/vagina/hymenal ring. In this report, we present the clinicopathologic features of the second case of cellular blue nevus arising in the myometrium. The patient was a 48-year-old woman who underwent a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for uterine leiomyomas. On gross examination, the uterus showed a subserosal, 1.0×0.5×0.3 cm, dark red nodule in the anterior uterine wall in addition to multiple leiomyomas. Microscopically, the subs

Diagnosis and treatment of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome in children.

BACKGROUND: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is characterized by distinctive vascular malformations of skin and the gastrointestinal tract, often leading to chronic anemia and intestinal bleeding. It usually presents right after birth or during early infancy. Though the disease is inherent, its occurrence is sporadic. Thus it is usually not timely diagnosed. We analyzed the clinical characteristics and treatment of this disorder in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Three patients with BRBNS treated at our hospital during 2002-2003 and 39 patients from the literatur

A case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome with familial onset.

We experienced a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome with familial onset. The patient was a 32-year-old male with a gallstone and many bluish rubber bleb-like hemangiomas on the skin. He suffered from repeated rectal bleeding and underwent a sigmoidectomy at age 17. Gastrointestinal hemangiomas were recognized in the esophagus, stomach, ileum and colon. An angiogram revealed multiple small poolings in the liver, suggesting the presence of hemangiomas. During the cholecystectomy, surgeons noted the presence of hemangiomas on the surface of the liver, serosa of the small intestine and retrop

Endoscopic therapy for esophageal hematoma with blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.

A 57-year-old woman previously diagnosed with blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) reported hematemesis. BRBNS is a rare vascular anomaly syndrome consisting of multifocal hemangiomas of the skin and gastrointestinal (GI) tract but her GI tract had never been examined. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a large bleeding esophageal hematoma positioned between the thoracic esophagus and the gastric cardia. An endoscopic injection of polidocanol was used to stop the hematoma from bleeding. The hematoma was incised using the injection needle to reduce the pressure within it. Finally,

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: a case report and literature review.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disease characterized by multiple venous malformations and hemangiomas in the skin and visceral organs. The lesions often involve the cutaneous and gastrointestinal systems. Other organs can also be involved, such as the central nervous system, liver, and muscles. The most common symptoms are gastrointestinal bleeding and secondary iron deficiency anemia. The syndrome may also present with severe complications such as rupture, intestinal torsion, and intussusception, and can even cause death. Cutaneous malformations are usually asymptomatic and

So-called "malignant blue nevus": a clinicopathologic study of 23 patients.

BACKGROUND: Melanomas that arise in association with or that resemble blue nevi are extremely rare and have been termed "malignant blue nevi." The authors report on a single-institutional clinicopathologic study of "blue nevus-like melanomas" (BNLMs). METHODS: Twenty-six patients were identified with a "malignant blue nevus" over 29 years at the Sydney Melanoma Unit. Twenty-three patients were included in the current study after pathologic review. Clinical outcomes of those patients were compared with the outcomes in a matched control group of patients with melanoma (matched for age, sex, Bre
