A retrospective analysis of the association between providing nicotine replacement therapy at admission and motivation to quit and nicotine withdrawal symptoms during an inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric patients have high tobacco use prevalence, dependence, and withdrawal severity. A tobacco-free psychiatric hospitalization necessitates the management of nicotine withdrawal (NW) for tobacco using patients. NW management often requires the provision of approved nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to patients, which may also motivate tobacco users towards cessation. However, few studies have examined the associations between providing NRT, motivation to quit, and NW among psychiatric patients. OBJECTIVE(S): To examine the associations between providing NRT at admission a

Harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) in two novel nicotine pouch products in comparison with regular smokeless tobacco products and pharmaceutical nicotine replacement therapy products (NRTs).

BACKGROUND: Tobacco-free nicotine pouches is a novel category of oral nicotine-delivery products. Among current tobacco users such pouches may serve as a low-risk alternative to cigarettes or conventional, tobacco-based oral products e.g., snus and moist snuff. In the United States (U.S.), the market leading nicotine-pouch brand is ZYN®. However, no data on the chemical characteristics of ZYN have been published. METHODS: We screened for 43 compounds potentially present in tobacco products in seven oral nicotine-delivery products: ZYN (dry and moist), snus (General®), moist snuff (CRP2.1 and

Effectiveness of Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Behavioral Intervention in Tobacco Cessation-A Tertiary Hospital-Based Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on smokeless tobacco (SLT) users is underexplored in India, with prior research primarily focusing on smokers. This study assessed and compared the effectiveness of combining behavioral intervention (BI) and NRT with BI alone on smoking and SLT cessation. METHODS: This 1.5-year prospective, open-label, three-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Tobacco Cessation Clinic, SCB Dental College and Hospital, Odisha, India. The three intervention groups-BI, BI + nicotine patch, and BI + nicotine gum-

Effectiveness of Nicotine Replacement Therapy on Smoking Cessation and Reduction Among Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients - A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND’: India is ranked second in the world in terms of tobacco use and tops the list of eight high-burden countries that account for two-thirds of the new tuberculosis (TB) cases globally. As tobacco smoking among TB patients is associated with unsuccessful TB treatment outcomes, effective smoking cessation interventions for TB patients is essential to combat this double pandemic. AIM: The study determined the effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on smoking reduction and cessation among pulmonary TB patients. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: The study included 300 pulmonary TB patie

Nicotine replacement therapy 'gift cards' for hospital inpatients who smoke: a prospective before-and-after controlled pilot evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: A common barrier identified by individuals trying to quit smoking is the cost of cessation pharmacotherapies. The purpose of this evaluation was to: (1) Assess the feasibility of offering nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) 'gift cards' to hospitalised smokers for use posthospitalisation; and, (2) Estimate the effect of providing NRT gift cards on 6-month smoking abstinence. METHODS: A prospective, quasi-experimental, before-and-after controlled cohort design with random sampling was used to compare patients who had received the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC) intervent

Dual addictions, parallel treatments: nicotine replacement therapy for patients receiving methadone treatment in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This parallel, randomized, open-ended clinical trial tested the impact of nicotine replacement pharmacotherapy during the course of methadone treatment among opiate abusers. A total of 424 men entered the study at 4 drug treatment centres in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran. The intervention group received a 6-week regimen of nicotine replacement pharmacotherapy at no charge. After 6 months, 211 persons (99.5%) in the control group continued to smoke and 1 person (0.5%) had quit. In the intervention group, 117 (55.1%) persons smoked, 15 (7.1%) persons had quit and 80 (37.7%) had reduced by mor

Quitline Counsellors' Experiences With Vaping and Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smoking Cessation in Australian Drug and Alcohol Services.

INTRODUCTION: In Australia, people undergoing inpatient treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorders have a high prevalence of tobacco smoking. Smoking cessation support is routinely offered to clients within inpatient withdrawal settings, but continued support post-discharge typically is not. The current study qualitatively explores attitudes and experiences of Quitline counsellors involved in a two-armed trial for clients with provision of 12 weeks of nicotine vaping products (NVPs) or combination nicotine replacement therapy (cNRT). METHODS: Two focus groups of Quitline counsel

Evaluating the effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy in critically ill smokers: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in critically ill patients remains uncertain, as conflicting research results have been reported. Despite potential side effects and inconsistent data on safety and efficacy, NRT is still prescribed in intensive care units (ICUs) to prevent withdrawal symptoms and manage agitation in patients who are smokers. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy in critically ill smoking patients. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigated the o

An abuse liability assessment of the glo tobacco heating product in comparison to combustible cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy.

Tobacco heating products (THPs) have reduced emissions of toxicants compared with cigarette smoke, and as they expose user to lower levels than smoking, have for a role to play in tobacco harm reduction. One key concern of Public Health is that new tobacco and nicotine products should not be more addictive than cigarettes. To assess their abuse liability, we determined nicotine pharmacokinetics and subjective effects of two THPs compared with conventional cigarettes and a nicotine replacement therapy (Nicotine inhaler). In a randomised, controlled, open-label, crossover study healthy adult smo

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of E-cigarettes Compared to Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smoking Cessation Among Medicaid Users in California.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disability in the United States. A 2019 randomized controlled trial found e-cigarettes are more effective than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in achieving abstinence when both are combined with behavioral counseling. Few cost-effectiveness studies have been performed regarding e-cigarettes as an adjunct to cessation efforts, and none in a U.S. context. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of e-cigarettes compared to NRT, both with counseling, and as cessation aids for Medicaid smokers in California. AIMS AND METHOD

Varenicline versus nicotine replacement therapy for long-term smoking cessation: an observational study using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the leading avoidable cause of illness and premature mortality. The first-line treatments for smoking cessation are nicotine replacement therapy and varenicline. Meta-analyses of experimental studies have shown that participants allocated to the varenicline group were 1.57 times (95% confidence interval 1.29 to 1.91 times) as likely to be abstinent 6 months after treatment as those allocated to the nicotine replacement therapy group. However, there is limited evidence about the effectiveness of varenicline when prescribed in primary care. We investigated the effectivenes

Constituents of "teabacco": A forensic analysis of cigarettes made from diverted nicotine replacement therapy lozenges in smoke-free prisons.

Following the implementation of prison smoke-free policies, there have been reports of prisoners creating substitute cigarettes made from nicotine replacement therapy patches or lozenges infused with tea leaves ("teabacco"). No studies have analyzed the chemical constituents of teabacco made from nicotine lozenges, so as to document any potential related health hazards. Teabacco samples were made by a participant who reported creating teabacco while incarcerated in a smoke-free prison in Queensland, Australia, and the process was video-recorded for replication in a laboratory.
