The objective of this study was to compare cycle control, efficacy and tolerance of an oral contraceptive containing 20 microg ethinylestradiol and 150 microg desogestrel with a preparation containing 30 microg ethinylestradiol combined with 75 microg gestodene. In the long history of oral contraception, unfortunate events have been associated with the use of oestrogens and progestogens. The discovery of new progestational hormones with weak androgenic activity but powerful progestational action has led to the combination of very low doses of ethinyloestradiol with low doses of progestational hormones which progressively increase in three successive stages. The products thus show excellent safety, accompanied by a minimum of incidents, and are extremely reliable contraceptives.

Resistin is a hormone secreted by adipose tissue that could be involved in the development of insulin resistance. Forty-nine healthy women aged 20-35 years who had not been pregnant or using an oral contraceptive (OC) for the previous 3 months were randomized into two groups, one group taking an OC containing 75 micrograms gestodene (GTD) and 30 micrograms ethinyl estradiol (EE), and the other group using an OC with 150 micrograms desogestrel (DSG) and 30 micrograms EE. Fasting blood samples were taken before treatment, and after cycles 3 and 6, between the 18th and the 22nd day of the cycle. Blood lipoprotein lipid levels were measured. Serum total cholesterol did not change significantly in both groups.
