BACKGROUND: Previously reported pathological series suggest that cardiac malformations are universal in trisomy 18. We examined our experien … examined between 10 and 14 weeks gestation and the remainder between 15 and 33 weeks. An increased nuchal translucency measurement was the reason for referral in most of the early cases and extracardiac anomalies in the remainder. Images were non-diagnostic in 12 cases (7%), all examined at <15 weeks gestation. Abnormal cardiac findings were detected in 118 of the remaining 162 …

First-trimester screening for fetal aneuploidy using nuchal translucency (NT), pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, free or total beta-hCG, and maternal age constitutes a very effective screening test for fetal Down syndrome. We describe a case in which a patient presented at 14 weeks' gestation with an acute abdomen 1 week after first-trimester screening (including NT measurement) performed elsewhere, which was negative for trisomies 21 and 18. Sonographic examination revealed an interstitial pregnancy with a singleton fetus with present cardiac activity, which had not been noted 1 week ear

PURPOSE: Turner syndrome (TS), also known as congenital ovarian hypoplasia syndrome, is a sex chromosome abnormality caused by a complete/partial absence of the second sex chromosome with complete X chromosome. The most common findings by prenatal ultrasonography of TS include thickened nuchal translucency, cystic hygroma, cardiovascular system abnormalities, urinary system diseases, and growth retardation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of TS with the ultrasonographic features of dorsal skin edema on both feet and a progressive slow growth of humerus length (HL) and femur length

We present three consecutive cases of skeletal dysplasias of a non-consanguineous couple with five pregnancies. The diagnosis of short-rib polydactyly syndrome (SRPS) was feasible by ultrasound during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. SRPS represents a heterogeneous group of lethal skeletal dysplasias. It is characterised by short limb dwarfism complicated by thoracic hypoplasia, polydactyly and different anomalies of major organs such as congenital heart defects and renal dysplasia. Four major types of the SRPS have been described: type I (Saldino-Noonan); type II (Majewski); type III (Verma-Na

A limited number of reports published since 2001 have described an association between increased nuchal translucency (NT) and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). We report a new case which underlines the frequency of this association as well as the importance of follow-up and genetic evaluation. In the present case, ultrasound scanning at 13 weeks of gestation showed a NT of 3.2 mm and no other pathological findings. At 20 weeks a severe skeletal dysplasia was diagnosed by ultrasound. The pathology report of the aborted foetus indicated OI, and DNA analysis confirmed a COL1A1 mutation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this series is to describe the first-trimester sonographic findings leading to the diagnosis of monosomy 18p.
METHODS: The sonographic appearance of 2 cases of monosomy 18p, detected as part of first-trimester sonographic screening for aneuploidy at this institution, was reviewed.
RESULTS: Increased nuchal translucency thickness, alobar holoprosencephaly, and facial defects were detected in both cases. Chromosomal analysis by chorionic villus sampling revealed de novo del(18p) in 1 case and monosomy 18p as the result of an 18q isochromosome in the other.

In Greece and other Mediterranean countries up to 10% of the population are carriers of beta-thalassaemia and this is the most common indication for chorion villus sampling (CVS): Cytogenetic analysis of the samples is not carried out routinely, but is confined only to women aged 35 years or more. In this report we present a case that illustrates how the measurement of fetal nuchal translucency may be useful in selecting the cases where in addition to the DNA analysis for beta-thalassaemia the samples can be tested for chromosomal defects.

INTRODUCTION: We present three cases of fetuses diagnosed as Turner syndrome with cystic hygroma (CH) developing hydrops to discuss the prenatal diagnostic and prognostic criteria of CH in ultrasound and outcome of the fetuses.
CASES: The first case was 30-year-old pregnant woman with a nuchal translucency measurement of 8 mm at 12 weeks' gestation. Serial ultrasound examinations revealed non-septated cystic hygroma and hydrops. The pregnancy was terminated at the 18th week of gestation. Diagnosis of CH was made at 14 and 15 weeks of gestation in case 2 and case 3, respectively. Ultrasound re…

BACKGROUND: Nuchal translucency (NT) is an important ultrasound indicator in early pregnancy. Increased NT is strongly associated with chromosomal abnormalities, structural defects, and other adverse outcomes. However, the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), numerous artifacts, and poor contrast present in ultrasound images pose considerable challenges to existing segmentation methods.
PURPOSE: To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel Transformer model, TransNTSeg, for NT segmentation. This study serves as a preliminary proof-of-concept to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed

In the beginnings, sonographic diagnosis of open spina bifida (OSB) relied on the meticulous scanning of the fetal vertebrae for abnormalities but many defects were missed. After the mid-1980s, however, with the description of the intracranial findings in the second trimester (the "lemon sign" and the "banana sign"), the prenatal diagnosis of OSB was enhanced. In the last 2 decades, there has been widespread uptake of routine ultrasound examination in the first trimester of pregnancy with the purpose of the measurement of fetal crown-rump length to determine gestational age, to screen for tris

Ultrasonography (US) is performed during early pregnancy for dating, determination of the number of fetuses, assessment of early complications, and increasingly for evaluation of the fetus, including measurement of the thickness of the nuchal translucency (NT). Measurement of NT thickness between 11 and 14 weeks gestation, combined with maternal age and maternal serum biochemistry, can be an effective method of screening for trisomy 21 and other chromosomal abnormalities. Furthermore, an increased NT thickness in the presence of a normal karyotype is associated with an increased frequency of s

The purpose of this article was to discuss the process of setting up a nuchal translucency (NT) screening clinic in clinical practice, how to interpret the information in combination with other clinical tests, what to do if abnormal results are obtained, and to illustrate some of the fetal anomalies that are associated with an increased NT. The NT was initially implemented to predict the likelihood of a fetus with Down syndrome. Maternal age can be combined with fetal NT and maternal serum biochemistry (free β-hCG and PAPP-A) at 11 to 14 weeks to identify about 90% of affected fetuses. Setting

OBJECTIVE: Genetic sonography following first-trimester combined screening appears to increase substantially detection rates for Down syndrome but it relies on the unproved assumption of independence between these tests. In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship between first-trimester nuchal translucency (NT) and a series of second-trimester soft markers and structural defects in unaffected pregnancies.
METHODS: NT measurement in the first trimester was followed by second-trimester scan (18 to 23 + 6 weeks) including examination for three categorical markers (intracardiac echoge

Nuchal Translucency (NT) screening is a critical prenatal diagnostic tool used to detect chromosomal abnormalities and congenital heart defects, yet it has limitations in accuracy and reliability. Despite its importance, research in this area, particularly involving Deep Learning (DL) techniques, remains limited. This survey addresses this gap by collecting and analyzing 53 research papers related to NT screening and detection. The study starts with a systematic paper selection process and followed by a literature review. Additionally, it outlines the general steps involved in conventional NT
