OBJECTIVES: To review recent literature on student nurses' perceptions of different areas of nursing practice, in particular community care. Healthcare is changing from care delivery in institutional settings to care to patients in their own homes. Problematic is that nursing students do not see community care as an attractive line of work, and their perceptions of community care do not reflect the realities of the profession. Understanding the factors influencing the perception of the professional field is important to positively influence students' willingness to see community nursing as a f

BACKGROUND: In Japan, postnatal care is delivered through follow-up home visits conducted by mother-child nurses in the community employed by local governments. During these visits, the nurses are responsible for promptly assessing the family's circumstances and mother's mental health and determining appropriate directions for ongoing support. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of mothers and children assessed by mother-child nurses in the community as needing ongoing support.
METHODS: In this qualitative study, participants were enrolled through convenience sampling. In total,

The NHS 10-year plan re-emphasises the long-standing policy aspiration for population and place-based approaches to health improvement. The Fit for the Future: 10 Year Health Plan sets out a neighbourhood health service as the practical mechanism for shifting care from hospital to community and from sickness to prevention. There is a gap between known evidence-based approaches to health improvement in community settings and local adoption in service delivery. One of the most underserved populations in any neighbourhood will be those affected by a lower limb condition, people with these conditi

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Health promotion for cardiovascular disease risk factors management is essential to secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease events. In Ireland, post-cardiac rehabilitation patients are discharged into the care of community public health nurses, who have a health promotion role. Little is known of the public health nurses' perceptions or knowledge surrounding their role in cardiovascular disease risk factor management. Underpinned by a constructivist viewpoint, this study aims to generate empirical evidence on the phenomenon directly from public health nurses' encounters

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk factors, including obesity and hypertension, are increasingly prevalent among children and youth, highlighting the need for early sustained prevention. Positioned at the intersection of health and education, school nurses are uniquely equipped to support cardiovascular health in everyday practice.
PURPOSE: We propose a collaborative model linking school nurses with the cardiovascular nursing community, drawing on the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 for Kids framework, the National Association of School Nurses School Nursing

Persons who are incarcerated (PWAI) suffer from a disproportionately higher number of physical and mental health conditions. While most jails and prisons provide onsite healthcare, community correctional centers often do not and accessing community healthcare is challenging due to insurance issues, inadequate health literacy, mistrust, and long waits for appointments. A registered nurse-led wellness clinic provides a viable solution to addressing the healthcare needs of PWAI in a community correctional setting. Through a community-academic partnership between a college of nursing and two commu

Dementia care embraces biological, psychological, spiritual and social components, commonly referred to as a biopsychosocial model. From a biological standpoint, dementia is caused by different diseases, each resulting in damage to nerve cells and transmitter pathways. Most people with dementia reside in a community setting, such as care homes or in their own homes, whether living alone or with family carers and supporters. This article considers the place of medications of the biopsychosocial model and discusses common medications used for: (i) for cognitive symptoms; (ii) non-cognitive sympt

When developing pre-registration adult nursing programmes, education providers in both educational institutions and clinical areas must decide what is a community nursing placement and how much time students should spend there. This article considers definitions of what constitutes "community" in terms of clinical placements for student nurses. It suggests what might realistically be termed community nursing and home nursing and explains how these can enrich student nurses' experiences. The practice requirements for other pre-registration nursing fields, such as child, mental health and learni

Community nurses play a significant role in the identification, assessment and treatment of rashes and associated skin conditions. It is important for them to be familiar with the location, pattern, appearance and feel of different types of rashes for timely diagnoses and escalation, if required. This article explores the processes of inspection, palpation, diagnostic tools and management strategies relevant to community nursing practice.

China is a country experiencing urgent and rapid urbanisation as it integrates Western ways of knowing and being. These rapid changes pose particular challenges for adolescents negotiating constructs of identity between worldviews. This paper will present a report on observations made on a recent scoping visit by two nurse academics to three Chinese cities. An ecological framework will be used to discuss and critique emerging health issues for adolescents. These were identified as 'early love', 'internet use and abuse', 'physical violence' and 'stealing'. Community health nurses are challenged

The World Health Organization highlights significant disparities in access to palliative care (PC), especially in primary and community care. In France, ASALEE is an innovative national association that brings nurses and general practitioners in primary and community care. Initially created to address the support needs of patients living with chronic diseases, the nurses' roles have expanded to include PC. However, despite the growing role of such interprofessional models, research on PC nurses' activities and skills in primary and community care are underdeveloped. To identify, categorize, co

To community nurses experiencing the chaos of repeated organisational change, the NHS can seem an environment hostile to clinical excellence. But, writes Alison Norman, the changing nature of health service management offers new opportunities for health visitors and school nurses to take the lead in pushing forward the boundaries of clinical practice. Here she examines the concept of leadership, and challenges practitioners to take up the gauntlet.

Although we may believe we are inviting client feedback about care, it is clear from a recent study surveying home care providers and older adult care recipients that failures in communication continue to plague us. Inadequate communication can lead to misunderstandings, client and provider dissatisfaction, and even termination of the home care provider-client relationship. By strengthening communication skills, staff can see changes in client satisfaction, have greater success in resolving potential problems, and may ultimately experience more job performance satisfaction.

This article addresses some of the contemporary issues in relation to providing palliative care for children in Ireland, particularly focusing on the creation of the specialist palliative care nursing outreach posts. The recent publication of an Irish national policy on palliative care for children with life-limiting illness is welcome news for paediatric nurses in Ireland. Children are valued members of society and have a right to receive quality health care and support appropriate to meet both children and the families' precise needs. However, community services for children with life-limiti
