The effect of a standardized nursing language education program on documentation practices among pediatric nurses.

BACKGROUND: Inconsistencies in pediatric nursing documentation compromise patient safety and limit the profession's ability to demonstrate its clinical contributions. Standardized nursing language (SNL), encompassing NANDA International (NANDA-I) nursing diagnoses, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), provides a structured framework to improve documentation quality. However, inadequate nurse education in SNL remains a significant barrier to its effective implementation, particularly in pediatric care settings. PURPOSE: This study examined the

Conceptualizing nurse practitioner role ambiguity: A dual-perspective for contemporary nurse practitioner practice.

BACKGROUND: The sustained well-being of the nurse practitioner (NP) workforce is threatened by pervasive role ambiguity. This ambiguity is frequently cited as a barrier to successful professional integration and practice. Although existing literature acknowledges this issue, it lacks a formal definition within the context of NP practice. This omission prevents targeted evaluation of its true impacts and the development of effective interventions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present a concept analysis of role ambiguity within the NP context. METHODOLOGY: Rodgers' evolutionary c

Nursing students' perceptions of community care and other areas of nursing practice - A review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To review recent literature on student nurses' perceptions of different areas of nursing practice, in particular community care. Healthcare is changing from care delivery in institutional settings to care to patients in their own homes. Problematic is that nursing students do not see community care as an attractive line of work, and their perceptions of community care do not reflect the realities of the profession. Understanding the factors influencing the perception of the professional field is important to positively influence students' willingness to see community nursing as a f

Using career nurse mentors to support minority nursing students and facilitate their transition to practice.

The Clinical Leadership Collaborative for Diversity in Nursing was developed through an academe-service partnership focused on supporting minority nursing students and facilitating transition to practice. A key program element is mentoring. Students are paired with an experienced, minority clinical nurse or nurse leader from one of the partnering agencies, who helps guide the student throughout the junior and senior year of school and first year of employment. The mentoring component was evaluated through surveys in which mentors and mentees rated one another and offered open-ended comments on

The failure of exposure treatment in agoraphobia: implications for the practice of nurse therapists and community psychiatric nurses.

There are no systematic studies of the failure of psychiatric nursing interventions and few very such studies in the psychological/psychiatric outcome literature. This study reports a controlled study of exposure treatment with agoraphobic clients who were treated by nurse therapists and psychologists. This includes an analysis of the four categories of treatment failure (i.e. treatment refusers, treatment dropouts, failures and relapsers). The analysis consisted of an examination of the outcome data of clients who met a priori criteria for the categories of failure and an examination of quest

Construction of a Predictive Model for Theory and Practical Performance in 'Fundamentals of Nursing' Based on Student Behavior - A Case Study of Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Fundamentals of Nursing is a core course essential for developing clinical competence. Variations in learning behaviors may lead to differences in academic performance. This study aimed to identify key behavioral predictors of both theoretical and practical outcomes and construct predictive models to support early intervention and teaching optimization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Machine learning techniques were applied to develop predictive models using data from undergraduate nursing students who enrolled the 2019 and 2020 cohorts. Demographic and learning behavior variables were co

Bridging practice and academia: A feasibility study of the Scalable Nurse Academic Practice Partnership Initiative (SNAPPI) to address nursing faculty shortages in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Texas faces a critical nursing shortage that is compounded by a shortage of qualified nursing faculty. Bedside nurses represent a promising pool of potential educators, but compensation disparities, scheduling burdens, and fragmented role expectations limit participation in academic teaching. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the Shared Nurse Academic Practice Partnership Initiative (SNAPPI), a multi-site academic-practice partnership model designed to integrate bedside nurses into formal clinical teaching roles while allowing them to remain in practice. METHODS: Guided by feasibilit

An Investigation of MMR-Related Mumps Cluster Following Immunization Among Practical Nursing Students, Bangkok, Thailand, 2024.

Background: Although MMR vaccination can induce mumps infections, clustered cases right after the vaccination are rarely reported. On September 10, 2024, the Department of Disease Control, Thailand, received a report of a cluster of practical nursing students (PNSs) with jaw and ear swelling following an MMR (L-Zagreb strain) vaccination. An investigation was conducted to confirm the outbreak, identify sources and risk factors, and recommend preventive measures. Methods: Active case findings were conducted among PNS and hospital service recipients who received the suspected vaccine batches. Su

The influence of spirituality on community nursing practice and patient experience.

Spirituality plays a significant role in end-of-life and palliative care, influenced by patients' religious and cultural backgrounds. Facing the reality that one's own life or that of a loved one is nearing its end can evoke feelings of hopelessness, anxiety and depression. Spiritual practices, such as invoking the intercession of saints or patrons, can provide comfort and hope, and a sense of meaning during this challenging and difficult time. Integrating these spiritual interventions into palliative care can support emotional wellbeing and enhance the holistic care of patients and their fami

The art and science of deprescribing: A practical guide for nurse practitioners.

Inappropriate polypharmacy is a critical threat to patient safety, contributing to adverse drug events, falls, and diminished quality of life. Although an essential clinical intervention, deprescribing remains underused due to clinician-specific and systemic barriers. This article explores deprescribing as both an art and a science, providing a structured five-step clinical framework tailored for nurse practitioners. Two case scenarios, involving a 50-year-old woman transitioning to hospice and a 74-year-old man in primary care, illustrate how to implement comprehensive medication reviews, use

Educational strategies for preparing nurse practitioners for rural practice.

Rural communities experience health care workforce shortages, poorer health outcomes, and significant barriers related to health care access, transportation, behavioral health services, and other social drivers of health. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are well positioned to address these disparities; however, traditional NP education often emphasizes urban and suburban practice environments, leaving graduates underprepared for the realities of rural practice. Preparing NPs to serve rural populations requires competencies that extend beyond clinical care, including cultural humility, community enga

Improving the evaluation of novice advanced practice nurse transition.

BACKGROUND: Novice advanced practice registered nurses (RNs) experience decreased self-confidence, anxiety, and identity confusion in their first year of practice, which leads to poor job satisfaction and turnover. Advanced practice RN fellowship programs, developed to bridge the gap from the RN to the advanced practice role, lack standardized measures for program evaluation. LOCAL PROBLEM: A large Midwestern pediatric hospital's advanced practice nurse fellowship program lacks a structured program evaluation. METHODS: A quasi-experimental evidence-based improvement project was implemented t

New Nurses' Perceptions on Transition to Practice: A Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: New nurses' transition to the workforce is often described as challenging and stressful. Concerns over this transition to practice are well documented, with the hypothesis that transition experiences influence the retention of new nurses in the workforce and profession. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey (N = 217) to assess new nurse transition in the province of Ontario, Canada, an open-ended item was included to solicit specific examples of the transition experience. The comments underwent thematic analysis to identify the facilitators and barriers of transition to practice fo
