Process evaluation of the implementation of the ABC method, an intervention for nurses dealing with challenging behaviour of patients with brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Introducing new working methods is common in healthcare organisations. However, implementation of a new method is often suboptimal. This reduces the effectiveness of the innovation and has several other negative effects, for example on staff turnover. The aim of the current study was to implement the ABC method in residential departments for brain injured patients and to assess the quality of the implementation process. The ABC method is a simplified form of behavioural modification based on the concept that behaviour operates on the environment and is maintained by its consequence

Chasing Zero: A Nurse-Driven Process for Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Reduction In a Community Hospital.

Due to treatment costs and lack of reimbursement, community hospitals are charged with implementing innovative strategies that will reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). A nurse-driven system for decreasing the number of hospital-acquired CAUTI is effective and useful for a community hospital. One nurse with accountability for implementing a simple evidence-based protocol can dramatically decrease the total incidence of hospital-acquired CAUTI. The basis for the success of this initiative relied heavily on the ease of using the eight-po

Reasons influencing the nurses' prioritization process while preventing and managing delirium: findings from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play an important role in the prevention and management of delirium episodes. However, some studies have reported that not all interventions recommended are applied due to time and resource constraints, resulting in patients receiving less care than required because other patients and/or interventions are prioritised. The concept of prioritization is part of the broader concept of decision-making as the ability to choose between two or more alternatives to ensure patient safety. Understanding the reasons influencing the prioritization process in patients at risk or with deli

Influence, education, and advocacy: the pediatric nurse's role in the evaluation and management of children with central auditory processing disorders.

PURPOSE: This discussion presents central auditory processing disorders to pediatric nurses who can influence decisions, educate parents and children, and advocate for children and families in the healthcare and educational settings. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses' understanding of central auditory processing disorders and their signs and symptoms may help prevent misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis in the pediatric population. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The common indicators of central auditory processing disorders often mimic other childhood disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Testing

Changes in patterns of care of the mentally handicapped: implications for nurses' perceptions of their roles and hospital decision making processes.

This paper reports on the findings of a longitudinal study of a mental subnormality hospital in the North of England. The focus is upon how nurses have experienced a major change in care and treatment of residents from 1978 to 1980. We explore, through the eyes of nurses, the change in their role from a predominantly nurturing/custodial one to a mainly educational/community orientated role. The research findings demonstrate that this change has increased nurses' self-esteem and their satisfaction with important areas of their work. There is some evidence also that nurses/resident relationships

Application Effect of Whole-process Quality Nursing Model Based on the WeChat Platform in Hysteroscopic Day Surgery for Endometrial Polyps: Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a whole-process quality nursing model based on the WeChat platform in patients undergoing hysteroscopic day surgery for endometrial polyps (EPs). METHODS: A total of 84 patients with EPs were enrolled and randomly divided into a control group or an observation group (n = 42 each) using a random number table. All patients underwent hysteroscopic day surgery. The control group received routine nursing care, while the observation group received a WeChat-based whole-process quality nursing intervention. Outcomes included incidence of comp

Development of a Quality Assessment Index System for Palliative Care Services in Chinese Nursing Homes: A Modified Delphi and Analytic Hierarchy Process Study.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages, nursing homes are key end-of-life care settings, making high-quality palliative care essential for safeguarding older adults' quality of life. However, China currently lacks a unified and systematic tool for evaluating the quality of palliative care services in nursing homes. AIM: To develop a quality assessment index system for palliative care services tailored to Chinese nursing homes. METHODS: The study employed a mixed-methods design with three phases: (1) a literature review (40 studies, 36 policy/guideline documents; 2013-2023) and semistructured int

A multifaceted nursing process to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections in a medical intensive care unit in the era of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) rate started to rise in October 2020 in our medical intensive care unit during the early months of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. A multidisciplinary taskforce, therefore, took the initiative in developing the CAUTI reduction process. METHODS: In this quality improvement initiative, the effectiveness of the CAUTI reduction process was examined retrospectively during the 25-month period from October 2020 to October 2022 in the medical intensive care unit. The processes utilized a multifaceted approach, incorpora

Development of a core competency evaluation indicator system for weight management nurses: a Delphi and analytic hierarchy process study.

BACKGROUND: Weight management services increasingly require nurses to contribute to risk assessment, behavioural support, multidisciplinary coordination and long-term follow-up. However, there is limited consensus on the competencies required for nurses working in this emerging field. This study aimed to develop an evaluation indicator system for the core competencies of weight management nurses. METHODS: A methodological study was conducted using semi-structured interviews, grounded theory coding, two rounds of Delphi consultation and the analytic hierarchy process. An initial indicator pool

Using statistical process control charts to measure changes from a nurse-driven protocol to remove urinary catheters.

BACKGROUND: Implementing a nurse-driven protocol (NDP) to remove indwelling urinary catheters is a strategy to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The purpose of this project was to implement a comprehensive NDP to reduce indwelling urinary catheter utilization and CAUTI rates at a large academic health system. METHODS: Statistical process control charts, a quality improvement method, was used to identify special cause variation. A formal protocol was developed to provide guidance for nurses to remove indwelling urinary catheters when no longer indicated. Changes were

The Role of the Built Environment: How Decentralized Nurse Stations Shape Communication, Patient Care Processes, and Patient Outcomes.

Increasingly, health communication scholars are attending to how hospital built environments shape communication, patient care processes, and patient outcomes. This multimethod study was conducted on two floors of a newly designed urban hospital. Nine focus groups interviews were conducted with 35 health care professionals from 10 provider groups. Seven of the groups were homogeneous by profession or level: nursing (three groups), nurse managers (two groups), and one group each of nurse care technicians ("techs") and physicians. Two mixed groups were comprised of staff from pharmacy, occupatio
