Translation and validation of the Short HIV Stigma scale in Brazilian Portuguese.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma, or the degree to which people living with HIV endorse negative stereotypes associated with HIV, is associated with poor continuum of care outcomes. We translated the 12-item Short HIV Stigma scale and evaluated its psychometric properties in a Brazilian context with regard to construct validity and reliability. METHODS: The first step included translation, back-translation, evaluation, peer review, and pre-testing of the Short HIV Sigma scale developed by Reinius et al. (Health Qual Life Outcomes 15(1):115, 2017). The second step involved piloting the scale in

Social Media Integration, Social Support, and Depression Among Older Adults.

PURPOSE: Understanding how social media use (SMU) embedded in daily routines influences mental health in older adulthood is crucial. We explored whether integration-based SMU relates to depressive symptoms and whether social support mediates that link, considering online network size. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 371 community-dwelling adults aged ≥55 years measured SMU integration, social support, depressive symptoms, demographics, health, and network size. Mediation analysis with bias-corrected bootstrapping assessed direct and indirect paths. RESULTS: Greater SMU integration corres

The role of social network structure and function in moderate and severe social and emotional loneliness: The Dutch SaNAE study in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a serious public health problem. This became even more visible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the key social network aspects contributing to loneliness remain unknown. Here, we evaluated social network structure and function and associations with (moderate/severe) social and emotional loneliness in older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study includes online questionnaire data (SaNAE cohort, August-November 2020), in independently living Dutch adults aged 40 years and older. For the separate outcomes of social and emotional loneliness, associations with stru

Online social and professional support for smokers trying to quit: an exploration of first time posts from 2562 members.

BACKGROUND: Both intratreatment and extratreatment social support are associated with increased rates of smoking cessation. Internet-based social support groups have the capability of connecting widely dispersed groups of people trying to quit smoking, making social support available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at minimal cost. However, to date there has been little research to guide development of this particular feature of Web-assisted tobacco interventions (WATIs). OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were to compare the characteristics of smokers who post in an online smoking cessation suppor

Appearance-Related Social Media Consciousness, Geosocial Networking App Use, and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Latinx Sexual Minority Men in the US: Acculturation as Moderator.

Latinx sexual minority men (SMM) living in the U.S. endure intersectional oppression which has been linked to their engagement in sexual risk behaviors, increasing their risk for adverse outcomes such as HIV/STI/STD contraction and ongoing poverty. While research extensively documents the sexual behaviors of Latinx SMM, there is a lack of research examining the influence of their online experiences specifically. Addressing this gap, the present study investigated the influence of appearance- related social media consciousness (ASMC) and geosocial networking (GSN) app use intensity on sexual ri

Social Identity Mapping as a Tool for Data Collection in Adolescent Recovery: A Mixed Methods Adaptation Study.

BACKGROUND: Social group memberships and group behaviors are pivotal in supporting or inhibiting adolescents' addiction recovery. Yet most research on social processes has relied on traditional surveys that cannot capture the complex nature of evolving social networks. Social Identity Mapping in Addiction Recovery (SIM-AR) asks respondents to create a visual representation, or map, of their social network, social groups, and social influences. The SIM-AR thus provides a novel, interactive, and detailed means to collect social network information, and does so in a way that is accessible and mea

Estimating the Size of the MSM Population in Metro Vancouver, Canada, Using Multiple Methods and Diverse Data Sources.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV globally, regionally in Canada, and locally in Vancouver. Lack of reliable population size estimates of MSM impedes effective implementation of health care services and limits our understanding of the HIV epidemic. We estimated the population size of MSM residing in Metro Vancouver drawing on four data sources: the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), a cross-sectional bio-behavioural MSM survey, HIV testing services data from sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics serving MSM, and online social networking site Fa…

Difference in Condom Use Between Bear Concordant and Discordant Dyads During the Last Anal Sex Event.

The purpose of this study was to understand how bear identity influenced condom use during the last anal sex event. Participants were recruited to complete an online, anonymous self-report survey through bear-related sexual and social networking websites. A total of 1,080 men who identified as gay or bisexual and as a member of the bear community and were 18 years or older completed the survey. Overall, fewer than a third of men reported condom use during the most recent receptive (28%) and insertive (30%) anal sex event. Men in bear concordant pairings were less likely to use a condom during
