Computer-assisted assessment of plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity using video indirect ophthalmoscopy images.

PURPOSE: "ROPtool" is a computer program that measures retinal blood vessel tortuosity. Our aim was to determine the feasibility and accuracy of analyzing images with ROPtool, which were obtained using video indirect ophthalmoscopy. METHODS: Forty-five posterior pole still images captured from indirect ophthalmoscopy video clips were selected; 20 were selected for high quality and 25 were randomly selected. One of the authors (S.A.) used ROPtool to measure tortuosity for each quadrant of each image. Two of the authors (D.K.W. and S.F.F.) independently judged tortuosity on a 10-point scale, an

A Computational Pipeline for Retinal Capillary Blood Flow Measurement using Adaptive Optics Line Confocal Ophthalmoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: High-speed and high-resolution retinal imaging using adaptive optics line confocal ophthalmoscopy (AOLCO) resolves individual red blood cells (erythrocytes) flowing through the smallest retinal capillaries, but quantifying their velocity first requires removing linear and nonlinear distortions caused by eye motion that may result in a displacement of tens to hundreds of pixels between frames. We present a computational pipeline that stabilizes AOLCO capillary video and measures erythrocyte velocity in true physical units, delivered as an interactive 3D Slicer extensio

Investigation of Retinal Microcirculation in Diabetic Patients Using Adaptive Optics Ophthalmoscopy and Optical Coherence Angiography.

The current research approaches the retinal microvasculature of healthy volunteers (17 subjects), patients with diabetes mellitus without retinopathy (19 subjects), and of diabetic patients with nonproliferative (17 subjects) and proliferative (21 subjects) diabetic retinopathy, by using adaptive optics ophthalmoscopy and optical coherence ophthalmoscopy angiography. For each imaging technique, several vascular parameters have been calculated in order to achieve a comparative analysis of these imaging biomarkers between the four studied groups. The results suggest that diabetic patients with o

Curriculum Innovations: Implementation of a Targeted Longitudinal Rotation to Enhance Direct Ophthalmoscopy Learning for Neurology Residents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Direct ophthalmoscopy (DO) is a core diagnostic skill for neurology residents. Although the importance of DO is accepted among neurology faculty and residents, proficiency in DO has declined because of limited training opportunities. The objectives of this study were to (1) provide neurology residents with supervised and unsupervised DO practice, (2) improve their competency and confidence in performing DO, and (3) develop a curriculum model adaptable to residencies with limited neuro-ophthalmology exposure. METHODS: A longitudinal, practice-based optometry or ophth

Comparison of algorithms to suppress artifacts from the natural lens in fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO).

Fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) has developed as a new diagnostic tool in ophthalmology. FLIO measurements are taken from 30° retinal fields in two spectral channels (short spectral channel (SSC): 498-560 nm, long spectral channel (LSC): 560-720 nm). Because of the layered structure of the eye, the detected signal is an interaction of the fluorescence decay of the anterior part and of the fundus. By comparing FLIO measurements before and after cataract surgery, the impact of the natural lens was proven, despite the application of a confocal laser scanning (cSLO) technique.

Artificial intelligence assisted clinical fluorescence imaging achieves in vivo cellular resolution comparable to adaptive optics ophthalmoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in biomedical optical imaging have enabled researchers to achieve cellular-level imaging in the living human body. However, research-grade technology is not always widely available in routine clinical practice. In this paper, we incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) with standard clinical imaging to successfully obtain images of the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in living human eyes. METHODS: Following intravenous injection of indocyanine green (ICG) dye, subjects were imaged by both conventional instruments and adaptive optics (AO) ophthalmoscopy. To imp

Multi-class Classification of Retinal Eye Diseases from Ophthalmoscopy Images Using Transfer Learning-Based Vision Transformers.

This study explores a transfer learning approach with vision transformers (ViTs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for classifying retinal diseases, specifically diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts, from ophthalmoscopy images. Using a balanced subset of 4217 images and ophthalmology-specific pretrained ViT backbones, this method demonstrates significant improvements in classification accuracy, offering potential for broader applications in medical imaging. Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts are common eye diseases that can cause vision loss if not treated. These dis

Cone Photoreceptor Morphology in Choroideremia Assessed Using Non-Confocal Split-Detection Adaptive Optics Scanning Light Ophthalmoscopy.

PURPOSE: Choroideremia (CHM) is an X-linked inherited retinal degeneration causing loss of the photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium, and choriocapillaris, although patients typically retain a central island of relatively preserved, functioning retina until late-stage disease. Here, we investigate cone photoreceptor morphology within the retained retinal island by examining cone inner segment area, density, circularity, and intercone space. METHODS: Using a custom-built, multimodal adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope, nonconfocal split-detection images of the photoreceptor mosa
