A 36-year-old black man who was taking low doses of systemic corticosteroids for systemic sarcoidosis had a vascular lesion of the left optic disk as the only ocular sign. The lesion regressed over a four-month period with high dosage corticosteroid therapy, but he developed optic atrophy and visual acuity of no light perception.

PURPOSE: To describe the diagnostic imaging, clinical features, and management of pitlike maculopathy and clinically occult optic pit (OOPM).
METHODS: The demographics, imaging features, and intervention details of the subjects with OOPM enrolled from 19 sites were retrospectively analyzed. The main outcome measure was the detection of an occult pit in OOPM.
RESULTS: Forty-seven eyes (46 subjects) with pitlike maculopathy without a visible optic pit were studied. Maculopathy consisted of multilayered retinoschisis and/or serous detachment (44 eyes); 3 eyes showed nonglaucomatous nerve fiber

PURPOSE: To demonstrate intraoperative dynamic flow through an optic disk pit.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional case report.
RESULTS: Surgical management of an optic disk pit involved standard, 25-gauge, pars plana vitrectomy, induction of posterior hyaloid separation with triamcinolone stain, temporal peripapillary laser, and SF 6 gas. Intraoperatively, a remnant of stained vitreous at the optic disk head prolapsed into the optic disk pit with higher intraocular pressure but was drawn back into the vitreous cavity as the intraocular pressure was lowered. This clearly demonstrated a pre…

We report the case of a 9-year-old girl who presented for a routine change of glasses. On slit-lamp examination, no abnormality was detected; however, dilated fundus examination revealed profuse myelination of the retinal nerves around the disk of the right eye along with an optic disk pit inferotemporally. The left eye fundus also had an optic disk pit inferotemporally but no associated myelination. Visual acuity was 6/9 in each eye, and the patient had no other ocular or systemic complaints. To our knowledge, cooccurrence of myelinated retinal nerves and optic disk pits in the same eye, has …

Primary angle closure glaucoma is usually a bilateral disease, though it may be asymmetrical. However, it is unusual to see advanced glaucoma in one eye and no disk damage in the other. We present a case of unilateral angle closure glaucoma complicated by an optic disk pit and iridociliary cysts. How to cite this article: Kaushik S, Ichhpujani P, Kaur S, Pandav SS. Optic Disk Pit and Iridociliary Cyst Precipitating Angle Closure Glaucoma. J Current Glau Prac 2014;8(1): 33-35.

PURPOSE: To report the successful resolution of an endophytic optic disk hemangioma (ODH) by photodynamic therapy.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 48-year-old man presented with endophytic ODH in his right eye. His best-corrected visual acuity was 1.2 in the right eye, but there was a serous retinal detachment with exudations extending from the tumor. Two intravitreal injections of bevacizumab were given with an interval of 6 months; however, the size of the ODH continued to increase and the best-corrected visual acuity decreased from 1.2 to 0.2. One year after the last injection of bevaciz…

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether eyes with chronic glaucoma have a larger or smaller optic disk than normal eyes.
DESIGN: Population-based, cross-sectional cohort study.
METHODS: The study included 4439 subjects out of 5324 subjects invited to participate with an age of 40+ years. Color optic disk photographs (45 degrees ) were morphometrically examined.
RESULTS: After exclusion of aphakic eyes, pseudophakic eyes, and highly myopic eyes, data of 3989 subjects entered the statistical analysis. The mean optic disk area did not vary significantly (P > .05) between the nonglaucomatous group (2.61 +…

PURPOSE: We evaluated the effect of optic disk edema on spontaneous venous pulsations (SVP) in patients without elevated intracranial pressure (ICP).Prospective, cross-sectional comparison in an institutional setting.
METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients with unilateral optic disk edema due to anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION, n = 11) or optic neuritis (n = 9) were evaluated. The proportion of subjects with SVP in both eyes, the involved eye only, the uninvolved eye only, or neither eye was determined. Comparisons were made using the Exact McNemar Test.
RESULTS: There was a significa…

PURPOSE: We studied a case of congenital optic disk pit and coloboma with associated malformations of the retinal vessels.
METHODS: Slit-lamp biomicroscopy and fluorescein angiography were performed.
RESULTS: Multiple retinal venous anastomoses associated with a congenital coloboma and pit of the optic disk were observed. The retinal vascular anomalies extended from the optic disk to the temporal periphery.
CONCLUSIONS: We consider the coexistence of retinal venous anastomoses with optic disk coloboma and pit to be an extremely rare congenital retinal anomaly.

After a brief review of total and partial hemihypertrophies, a case of facial hemihypertrophy with pitting of the optic disk and a defect in the adjacent retinal pigment epithelium is reported. The common teratogenetic period of termination suggests that the facial and ocular defects may be pathogenetically related.

We examined the clinical characteristics of affected and unaffected members of an American black family with the 11778 mitochondrial DNA mutation associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy. Thirty-six individuals from four generations were included. All maternally related subjects were shown to be essentially homoplasmic for the 11778 mitochondrial DNA mutation in blood. Paternally related subjects did not carry this mutation. Patients affected with optic neuropathy had optic nerve head cupping. Loss of unmyelinated axons from the prelaminar optic nerve may be responsible for cupping

PURPOSE: To describe the macular findings by optical coherence tomography in both eyes of a patient with tilted optic disk and visual decrease.
METHODS: A 35-year-old woman with bilateral tilted optic disk and serous macular detachment was examined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
RESULTS: Fluorescein angiography demonstrated staining of the temporal rim of the staphyloma adjacent to the optic disk and hyperfluorescence of the diffuse pigmentary changes in the papillomacular area. Leakage points and ser…

Cryptococcal meningitis is the most common and severe form of cryptococcal infection. In addition to infiltrative and inflammatory mechanisms, intracranial hypertension commonly complicates cryptococcal meningitis and may cause significant visual and neurological morbidity and mortality. The mainstays of treatment for cryptococcal meningitis include standard antifungal therapy, management of intracranial hypertension, and treatment of underlying immunosuppressive conditions. Early and aggressive management of intracranial hypertension in accordance with established guidelines reduces the risk

Based on 13 years observations of three generations of relatives with v. Hippel-Lindau's disease the authors focus attention on early stages of clinically detectable retinal angiomatosis. They supplement these findings by an angioma on the optic disc in one sporadic case. They consider the ophthalmological diagnosis of priority importance for the patients and risk relatives and recommend a concept of presymptomatic screening to detect other organ sites of the disease. Early detection and treatment of lesions on eyes and other organs improves the prognosis and reduces early mortality.
