Role of three-dimensional ultrasound measurement of the optic tract in fetuses with agenesis of the septum pellucidum.

OBJECTIVES: To construct reference ranges for fetal optic tract mean diameter and to report measurements in fetuses with agenesis of the septum pellucidum (SP). METHODS: Three-dimensional volumes of the optic chiasm were acquired in 98 normal fetuses during routine sonographic examination at 21-36 weeks' gestation and the diameters of the posterior left and right optic tracts were measured offline. A polynomial regression approach (mean and SD model) was used to compute reference charts for the mean fetal optic tract diameter measurements. In addition, 23 volumes were acquired in fetuses with

Rapid detection of group B streptococcal colonization of the genital tract by a commercial optical immunoassay.

The performance of a commercial optical immunoassay (OIA) was compared at two institutions with that of routine agar and broth culture methods for the detection of group B streptococcal (GBS) colonization of the genital tract. The Strep B OIA (Bio Star, USA) was used to test 962 vaginal swabs from pregnant women for the presence of GBS antigen. The prevalence of GBS vaginal colonization in this population was 22.4%. The OIA results were compared with those of culture on trypticase soy agar with 5% sheep blood (TSA) and broth enhanced culture (Lim broth). Sensitivity and specificity values of t

The nucleus of the optic tract. Its function in gaze stabilization and control of visual-vestibular interaction.

1. Electrical stimulation of the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT) induced nystagmus and after-nystagmus with ipsilateral slow phases. The velocity characteristics of the nystagmus were similar to those of the slow component of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and to optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN), both of which are produced by velocity storage in the vestibular system. When NOT was destroyed, these components disappeared. This indicates that velocity storage is activated from the visual system through NOT. 2. Velocity storage produces compensatory eye-in-head and head-on-body movements through

In vivo imaging of vagal-induced myenteric plexus responses in gastrointestinal tract with an optical window.

The vagus nerve (VN) extensively innervates the gastric enteric nervous system (ENS), but its influence on gastric ENS functionality and motility in vivo remains unclear due to technical challenges. Here we describe a method for stable, long-term observation of gastric ENS activity and muscle dynamics at cellular resolution, which can also be extended to intestinal applications. This method involves ENS-specific labeling and the implantation of an abdominal wall window for optical recording in male mice. In vivo calcium imaging reveals a linear relationship between vagal stimulation frequency

An olfactory groove schwannoma with a pseudocyst compressing the basal ganglia, internal capsule and optic tracts.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory groove schwannomas (OGSs) are extremely rare tumours, particularly in the paediatric population. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old girl presented with two epileptic seizures, papilloedema and incomplete binasal quadrantanopia. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a large heterogeneously enhancing tumour of the anterior skull base with a prominent dorsal pseudocyst. Interestingly, the pseudocyst embraced the right ICA bifurcation and displaced the optic tracts, optic chiasm and optic nerves and the ipsilateral basal ganglia. The patient un

Private lines of cortical visual information to the nucleus of the optic tract and dorsolateral pontine nucleus.

The subcortical nucleus of the optic tract and dorsal terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system (NOT-DTN), along with the dorsolateral pontine nucleus (DLPN), has been shown to play a pivotal role in controlling slow eye movements. Both nuclei are known to receive cortical input from striate and extrastriate cortex. To determine to what degree this cortical input arises from the same areas, and potentially from the same individual neurons, in one set of experiments we placed different retrograde tracers into the NOT-DTN and the DLPN. In the ipsilateral cortical hemisphere the two projecti

White-matter alterations in dysthyroid optic neuropathy: a diffusion kurtosis imaging study using tract-based spatial statistics.

PURPOSE: So far, there is no gold standard to diagnosis dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) has the potential to provide imaging biomarkers for the timely and accurate diagnosis of DON. This study aimed to explore the white matter (WM) alterations in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) patients with and without DON using DKI with tract-based spatial statistics method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-three TAO patients (21 DON and 32 non-DON) and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this cross-sectional study. DKI data were analyzed and compared among gr

Pituitary Apoplexy Complicated by Bilateral Anterior Cerebral Artery Territory Infarctions and Optic Tract Edema: A Case Report.

Pituitary adenomas are common intracranial extra-axial neoplasms, classified based on size into microadenomas (<1 cm) and macroadenomas (>1 cm), and according to hormonal activity into functional and non-functional adenomas. Functional adenomas present with hormone-related syndromes, whereas non-functional macroadenomas typically cause symptoms due to mass effect, most commonly visual field defects. Uncommonly, pituitary adenomas may present acutely as pituitary apoplexy (PA), a medical emergency requiring prompt diagnosis and management to prevent mortality and long-term morbidity. Cerebral i

Evaluating the impact of denoising diffusion MRI data on tractometry metrics of optic tract abnormalities in glaucoma.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI)-based tractometry is a non-invasive neuroimaging method for evaluating white matter tracts in living humans, capable of detecting abnormalities caused by disorders. However, measurement noise in dMRI data often compromises the signal quality. Several denoising methods for dMRI have been proposed, but the extent to which denoising affects tractometry metrics of white matter tissue properties associated with disorders remains unclear. We evaluated how denoising affects tractometry along the optic tract (OT) in patients with glaucoma. Because glaucoma damages retinal ganglion

Reversible bilateral optic tract edema following pipeline-assisted coiling of a large ophthalmic aneurysm: A case report.

Edema coursing the optic apparatus has traditionally been associated with sellar and para-sellar tumors. However, postoperative aneurysmal volume expansion following endovascular treatment has been reported to induce cranial neuropathies, such as vision loss in rare instances. Here, we present a case report of worsening optic tract edema associated with bilateral visual acuity deficit following treatment of a large left paraophthalmic aneurysm with pipeline-assisted coiling. Rapid resolution of visual deficit was observed following administration of corticosteroids. A 42-year-old female with a

Atypical Wernicke's syndrome sans encephalopathy with acute bilateral vision loss due to post-chiasmatic optic tract edema.

A middle aged male presented with acute bilateral vision loss, 4 weeks after undergoing gastric bypass surgery for gastric carcinoma. He had normal sensorium, fundoscopy, normal pupillary reaction to light, but had mild opthalmoparesis and nystagmus with ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed post-chiasmatic optic tract edema along with other classical features of Wernicke's syndrome. Thiamine supplementation leads to complete resolution of clinical as well as imaging findings. In appropriate clinical settings, a high index of suspicion and early treatment are essential for m

Patterns of white matter diffusivity abnormalities in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy: a tract-based spatial statistics study.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a mitochondrial disease characterized by retinal ganglion cell degeneration and optic nerve atrophy, leading to a loss of central vision. The aim of this study was to explore the topographical pattern of damage to the brain white matter (WM) tracts from patients with chronic LHON using diffusion tensor (DT) MRI and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). Brain dual-echo and DT MRI scans were acquired from 13 patients with chronic LHON and 25 matched controls using a 3.0 T scanner. TBSS analysis was performed using the FMRIB's Diffusion Toolbox. A co

Umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stromal cells are neuroprotective and promote regeneration in a rat optic tract model.

Exploitation of the ability of stem cells to protect damaged neuronal tissue may be a more viable strategy than cell replacement for repair of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study we assessed the capacity of human umbilical cord blood (hUCB)-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to protect and promote regeneration of axotomised neurons within the rat optic system. The optic tract of neonatal rats was transected at the level of the lateral geniculate nucleus, and MSCs were introduced into the lesion site. MSCs survived well up to 2 weeks after grafting, and did not migrate signifi

MR imaging study of edema-like change along the optic tract in patients with pituitary region tumors.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Edema-like change along the optic tract commonly occurs in association with craniopharyngiomas. The aim of this study was to clarify whether it occurs in association with other common pituitary region tumors and to elucidate its mechanism as seen on MR images. METHODS: Fifty patients with pituitary region tumors that were touching or compressing the optic pathway underwent heavily T2-weighted MR imaging before and after treatment. RESULTS: Edema-like change along the optic tract was visible on the images of four of 25 pituitary adenomas, eight of 11 craniopharyngiomas

Enhancing biliary tract cancer diagnosis using AI-driven 3D optical diffraction tomography.

Biliary tract cancer is associated with distinct metabolic alterations, particularly in lipid metabolism. This study aimed to classify biliary tract cancer cells automatically based on lipid droplet (LD) characteristics using three-dimensional (3D) optical diffraction tomography (ODT) combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Human biliary tract cancer cell lines (SNU1196, SNU308, and SNU478) and a normal cholangiocyte cell line (H69) were cultured to evaluate the LD volume, mass, and count. We generated 3D refractive index tomograms and developed a CNN-based diagnostic system for au

Astrocyte heterogeneity within white matter tracts and a unique subpopulation of optic nerve head astrocytes.

Much of what we know about astrocyte form and function is derived from the study of gray matter protoplasmic astrocytes, whereas white matter fibrous astrocytes remain relatively unexplored. Here, we used the ribotag approach to isolate ribosome-associated mRNA and investigated the transcriptome of uninjured fibrous astrocytes from three regions: unmyelinated optic nerve head, myelinated optic nerve proper, and corpus callosum. Astrocytes from each region were transcriptionally distinct and we identified region-specific astrocyte genes and pathways. Energy metabolism, particularly oxidative ph
