Environmental impact of orthodontic treatment: a simplified fast-track comparative life-cycle impact assessment of self-ligating metal brackets and clear aligners.

OBJECTIVE: Sustainability is a prominent topic in modern-day society, with a trend toward reducing environmental impact. The growing amount of plastics and the release of greenhouse gases during waste management raise concerns. This study compares the environmental burden of clear aligners- and self-ligating metal brackets (fixed appliances) to identify the production phase where improvements could best reduce impact. METHODS: A simplified fast-track life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) was performed for four illustrative patient cases (two aligner, two fixed appliances). Data were derived fro

Class III malocclusion with complex problems of lateral open bite and severe crowding successfully treated with miniscrew anchorage and lingual orthodontic brackets.

In this article, we report the successful use of miniscrews in a patient with an Angle Class III malocclusion, lateral open bite, midline deviation, and severe crowding. Simultaneously resolving such problems with conventional Class III treatment is difficult. In this case, the treatment procedure was even more challenging because the patient preferred to have lingual brackets on the maxillary teeth. As a result, miniscrews were used to facilitate significant asymmetric tooth movement in the posterior and downward directions; this contributed to the camouflage of the skeletal mandibular protru

Comparative Evaluation of Shear Bond Strength of Recycled Metal and Ceramic Orthodontic Brackets Following Different Surface Treatment Methods: An In Vitro Study.

INTRODUCTION: Fixed orthodontic treatment relies on adequate bond strength between brackets and enamel to withstand functional forces during therapy. The recycling of debonded brackets is a common practice to reduce treatment costs; however, it may compromise the shear bond strength (SBS) depending on the reconditioning method and bracket material. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the SBSs of recycled metal and ceramic orthodontic brackets after different surface treatment methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 96 extracted human premolars were randomly divided into two m…

Camouflage treatment for skeletal Class III patient with facial asymmetry using customized bracket based on CAD/CAM virtual orthodontic system.

When considering camouflage orthodontic treatment for Class III malocclusion with skeletal facial asymmetry, it is crucial to preserve the favorable compensated posterior occlusion. Once the inclination of the compensated occlusion is changed during orthodontic treatment, unstable occlusion, such as crossbite or scissor bite may occur. A 23-year-old female patient had anterior spacing with Class III malocclusion and a mandibular asymmetry. A nonsurgical approach was adopted. The treatment objectives were to establish a Class I molar relationship with compensated inclination of the posterior de
