Orthodontics and Moebius syndrome: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome is a rare condition characterized by bilateral facial and abducens nerve paralysis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the main orthodontic features and the frequency of associated clinical characteristics in patients with Moebius syndrome (MS). METHODS: According to Terzis classifications, 58 patients with MS aged 8 months to 46 years old underwent orthodontics and clinical examination. RESULTS: Strabismus, upper and lower limb malformations, lip and palatal cleft were frequently associated with MS. Reduced TM movements were noted (48%). Cephalometric analysis…

Cone Beam Computed Tomographic imaging in orthodontics.

Over the last 15 years, cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging has emerged as an important supplemental radiographic technique for or … iculty, the presence of dental and/or skeletal modifying conditions, and pathology. CBCT imaging in orthodontics should always be considered wisely as children have conservatively, on average, a three to five times greater radiation risk compared with adults for the same exposure. The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the operation of CBC …

Piezosurgery®-assisted periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics.

Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontic procedure has become useful adjunct to reduce orthodontic treatment time as compared with conventional orthodontics. This case demonstrates the use of Piezosurgery® to facilitate rapid tooth movement with relatively shorter treatment time. A 23-year-old male with Angles Class I malocclusion having spaced anterior teeth and protrusion requested orthodontic treatment with reduced time period. Before surgery, presurgical orthodontic treatment was done to do initial alignment of the teeth. This was followed by piezosurgical corticotomy and final spa…

[Incisor repositioning: a new approach in orthodontics].

Lower incisors axis has a "key" position in different cephalometric analysis. However, several critics are directed towards the cephalometric profile and cephalometric landmarks (point, line and angle). The published norms and the cephalometric standards recommended for the optimal positioning of incisors could only be used as general clinical guidelines. Incisor repositioning to achieve optimal facial aesthetics requires taking into consideration the hard and soft tissues of the face, the profile, the muscular dynamics as well as the facial growth. In this work, we propose a new approach of i

Surface electromyography in orthodontics - a literature review.

Electromyography is the most objective and reliable technique for evaluating muscle function and efficiency by detecting their electrical po … ace electromyography, along with its limitations and possibilities for further use in many areas of orthodontics. The main clinical uses of sEMG include the diagnostics and therapy of temporomandibular joint disorders, an assessment of the extent of stomatognathic system dysfunctions in subjects with malocclusion, and the monitoring of orthodontic therapies.

Interceptive orthodontics--current evidence-based best practice.

UNLABELLED: This article examines the key areas relating to interceptive orthodontics, ie crossbites, anterior and posterior; eruption problems and impaction (including incisors and canines); poor quality first permanent molars; infra-occluded primary molar teeth; non-nutritive sucking habits (digit and pacifier sucking) leading to anterior openbite, posterior crossbite and increased overjet; centreline shifts related to unilateral loss of primary teeth; and increased overjet and associated risk of trauma. It aims to provide information and recommendations. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The GDP require…

Gingival recession--can orthodontics be a cure?

Does orthodontic treatment help or hinder a patient's periodontal status? What factors affect the periodontium? Can those factors be managed in a way that remedies existing periodontal issues? A 35-year-old woman presented with severe gingival recession and a unilateral Class II malocclusion. The treatment plan was to correct the malocclusion in a way that torques the roots more onto bone and to change her dental hygiene methods. With an extensive review of the literature, this case review attempts to make sense of the enigma of gingival recession and demonstrates an excellent treatment soluti

Orthodontics for treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) relate to discomfort of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The disorder is multifactorial with … nd of these articles only four demonstrated any data that might be of value with respect to TMD and orthodontics. After further analysis of the full texts of the four studies identified, none of the retrieved studies met the inclusion criteria and all were excluded from this review. Soft-tissue lasers in orthodontics: an overview.

Soft-tissue lasers have numerous applications in orthodontics, including gingivectomy, frenectomy, operculectomy, papilla flattening, uncovering temporary anchorage devices, ablation of aphthous ulcerations, exposure of impacted teeth, and even tooth whitening. As an adjunctive procedure, laser surgery has helped many orthodontists to enhance the design of a patient's smile and improve treatment efficacy. Before incorporating soft-tissue lasers into clinical practice, the clinician must fully understand the basic science, safety protocol, and risks associated with them. The purpose of this art…

Use of miniscrews and miniplates in orthodontics.

Paradigms have started to shift in the orthodontic world since the introduction of mini-implants in the anchorage armamentarium. For example, miniscrews have allowed the management of wider discrepancies than those treatable by conventional biomechanics because force can be applied directly from the bone-borne anchor unit. Therefore, miniscrews not only free orthodontists from anchorage-demanding cases, but they also enable clinicians to have good control over tooth movement in 3 dimensions. This review will illustrate the versatility of skeletal anchorage provided by mini-implants in the corr

Indications for digital volume tomography in orthodontics.

Disturbances in tooth eruption and tooth impactions make great demands on radiographic diagnostics. There is often need for radiographic images in various projections to assess the exact position of unerupted and impacted teeth. Digital volume tomography (DVT) is a method for localizing hard tissue structures such as bone and teeth on various planes. Moreover, it makes a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws and the viscerocranium possible. From an orthodontic point of view, digital volume tomography is indicated to detect impacted and ectopic teeth and to demonstrate the amount of bone a

Orthodontics. Part 6: Risks in orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontics has the potential to cause significant damage to hard and soft tissues. The most important aspect of orthodontic care is to have an extremely high standard of oral hygiene before and during orthodontic treatment. It is also essential that any carious lesions are dealt with before any active treatment starts. Root resorption is a common complication during orthodontic treatment but there is some evidence that once appliances are removed this resorption stops. Some of the risk pointers for root resorption are summarised. Soft tissue damage includes that caused by archwires but also …

Applications for direct composite restorations in orthodontics.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Besides prosthetic and indirect, laboratory-produced restorations, the focus of dental therapy is increasingly on restorative measures and direct restorations as minimally invasive treatment concepts. Thus, the use of direct composite restorations with modern restorative materials for the shaping and recontouring of teeth in combination with orthodontic treatment offers a diversified, extensive sphere of application. The aim of the study was to demonstrate applications for direct composite restorations with reference to selected cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The composites

[Pre-orthognathic surgery in orthodontics: towards justification].

This work presents long term results of rhinopharyngeal desobstructions on nine years old patients. By using several techniques such as: tonsillectomies, adenoïdectomy, adenoïdotonsillectomies, luxation of inferior turbinates, partial turbinectomies or bilateral turbinectomies under endoscopic guidance, and then, following carefully the oral and nasal peak flows for a period as long as one or two years, it becomes obvious that the most efficient desobstruction procedure is accomplished through a combination of E.N.T. rhinopharyngeal procedures, i.e. adenoïdotonsillectomies and inferior turbine
