Treatment of unilateral crossbite using modified palatal arch: case report.

Severe unilateral crossbite was diagnosed in a five-year and five-month Taiwanese girl. Clinical examination presented left posterior and anterior crossbites resulting in significant dental and facial midline deviations. Early intervention was recommended in this case for severe functional shift which might induce facial asymmetry. The unilateral crossbite was successfully treated using modified palatal arch with finger springs. The patient has shown stable occlusion and no midline deviation after six years of follow-up.

The use of muscle forces by simple orthodontic appliances.

Orthodontic appliances of simple construction have been described. They are valuable in intercepting the deforming action of perioral muscle function or malfunction. The same muscles that have the deforming potential may be enlisted to correct dental malocclusions. Early interception often prevents a problem of considerably greater magnitude at a later date.

Timing orthodontic treatment: early or late?

The timing of orthodontic interventions has been a contentious topic for many years with early treatment to address or indeed to prevent skeletal discrepancies in all three spatial planes and to alleviate crowding in common practice. In terms of effectiveness, however, broadly speaking early intervention has not been shown to be superior to later intervention. As such, in view of the additional burden and duration of early intervention, the weight of evidence points to reserving early treatment for localized problems and specific situations with definitive treatment typically initiated in the

Eruptive malpositioning of the mandibular permanent lateral incisors: three case reports.

Ectopic eruption of the mandibular permanent lateral incisors involving the loss of the adjacent primary canines is not uncommon, yet the extreme distalization and transposition of such teeth (partial or true) has been reported infrequently. Three cases that illustrate various anomalous eruption-exfoliation patterns are presented. Theories that attempt to explain the etiology of anomalous eruption positions are discussed. However, the multifactorial process of growth and development makes it difficult to identify specific primary etiological factors. Treatment options also are discussed and il

Use of self-organizing maps for analyzing the behavior of canines displaced towards midline under interceptive treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Brucellosis and echinococcosis are highly prevalent in pastoral areas, and traditional detection methods are limited because they are labor intensive, time consuming, and can only detect single-pathogens. This study aims to develop a magneto-immunofluorescent microfluidic chip for the rapid and simultaneous detection of serum antibodies against both brucellosis and echinococcosis and verify the detection performance and clinical application potential of the chip. METHODS: In this study, a magneto-immunofluorescent microfluidic chip was designed, fabricated and optimized, with a fo

Eruption guidance in the mixed dentition: a case report.

Management of space problems is an important factor in the mixed dentition. The Clear Aligner can carry out minor tooth movement with no brackets bonded to the teeth. In addition, it can provide tooth movement for the following: crowding resolution, space closure, arch expansion or constriction, space maintenance or regaining, intrusion or extrusion, guidance of the eruption, and other interceptive orthodontic treatment.

Ectopic eruption of the maxillary central permanent incisors and mandibular first permanent molars: report of an unusual case.

Ectopic eruption is a disturbance in which the tooth does not follow its usual course. Among its more important etiologic factors are macrodontism, shortened arch length, posterior positioning of the maxilla, atypical eruption angle, and genetic factors. This article reports a rare case of ectopic eruption of 4 permanent teeth, maxillary central incisors and mandibular first molars, in a child aged 7 years and 11 months, in which the treatment consisted of extracting the maxillary primary central incisors and making an orthodontic intervention on the mandibular arch. A bilateral fixed applianc

Guidelines for periodontal care and follow-up during orthodontic treatment in adolescents and young adults.

Aggressive periodontitis is characterized by non-contributory medical history, rapid attachment loss and bone destruction and familial aggregation of cases. Aggressive periodontitis (both localized and generalized) is usually diagnosed in a young population. This is frequently the age that an orthodontic care is provided to this population. The aim of the present paper is to draw guidelines for periodontal evaluation and monitoring prior to and during active orthodontic treatment. Strict adherence to these guidelines as a routine protocol for periodontal examination prior, during and following

Primary posterior crossbite: diagnosis and treatment.

The incidence of posterior crossbite in the primary dentition has been reported as 7-17%. The crossbite usually results from bilateral maxillary constriction and is commonly associated with an occlusion guided lateral deviation of the mandible upon closing. Correction of the functional posterior crossbite in the primary dentition is indicated to establish a stable occlusion and avoid possible deleterious effects on the developing temporomandibular joint. Treatment in the primary dentition results in the eruption of the first permanent molars in normal transverse relationship in 84% of the case

Orthodontic management of mandibular lateral incisor-canine transpositions: reports of cases.

This article presents different treatment aspects in three mandibular lateral incisor-canine transposition cases. The early identification of transposed teeth simplifies orthodontic correction. Incomplete transposition cases can be managed successfully by interceptive orthodontic treatment. If complete transposition occurs, two treatment alternatives may be possible: Extraction of the transposed tooth or keep the teeth in their transposed positions.

[Orthodontics in general practice 4. Impaction of maxillary front teeth].

Eruption failures in the maxillary frontal region occur during the mixed dentition period. Dislocation and impaction of central incisors are diagnosed during or at the end of the early mixed dentition stage. These failures can be caused by crowding, premature loss of deciduous teeth, trauma or supernumerary teeth. Occasionally, a preventive orthodontic treatment is desirable to release the obstructed eruption path of a canine. Sometimes, a surgical intervention may be indicated to expose an obstructed central incisor and to remove supernumerary teeth. Retention and impaction of canines are gen
