Change in taste sensation after orthognathic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of orthognathic surgery on taste sensation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients scheduled to undergo Le Fort I osteotomy (LFIO), sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO), and bimaxillary surgery (BMS) were evaluated by administering localized and whole-mouth taste tests preoperatively and postoperatively at months 1, 3, and 6. The patients were asked to identify the quality of four basic tastes applied to six locations on the palate and tongue and to rate the taste intensities they perceived. Taste recognition thresholds a

Concomitant Temporomandibular Joint Replacement and Orthognathic Surgery.

The treatment of patients with severe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and associated skeletal discrepancies presents a complex challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. It is widely recognized that TMDs can impact the stability and outcomes of surgical treatments for dentofacial deformities. Consequently, addressing TMDs prior to or in conjunction with orthodontic or surgical interventions may be necessary to achieve optimal and long-lasting results. Alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) and orthognathic surgery have emerged as the standard approach due to their p

Esthetic Considerations In Minimally Invasive Orthognathic Surgery.

The success of dental implants has long been considered to be dependent primarily on the quality and quantity of alveolar bone. Bone grafting allows patients with insufficient bone volume to obtain implant-supported prosthetic solutions for treatment of edentulism. While extensive bone grafting procedures have been commonly used to rehabilitate severely atrophic arches, they can be associated with long treatment times, unpredictability, and donor site morbidity. Nongrafting solutions have more recently been employed that maximally utilize the residual highly atrophic alveolar or extra-alveolar

Facial Nerve Palsy Associated With Orthognathic Surgery.

The authors report a 25-year-old female who presented facial palsy after undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for retrognathism correction. Orthognathic surgery is a procedure used to treat dentofacial deformities which aims to achieve an adequate relationship between dental archs, improving function (such as chewing, breathing, and speaking) and facial aesthetics. Even though there are some complications that can occur during the intraoperative and postoperative periods like bleeding, tooth, soft-tissue damage, nerve damage, bad split, infection, and nonunion, facial nerve injuries are

Gossypiboma during orthognathic surgery: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Dislodgment of nasopharyngeal temperature probes and/or unretrieved device fragments (UDFs) or gossypibome at a patient's hypopharynx is rare complication after orthognathic surgery that may occur as a result of surgical manipulation or may be a consequence of factors related to the insertion and handling of the probe after extubation. However, the exact mechanism of this complication is unknown. To the best of our knowledge, this is the 1st reported case of a missing temperature probe after orthognathic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a patient who suffered fr

Auditory changes in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.

During orthognathic surgery, especially on the maxilla, osteotomies and displacements cause paratubular muscle dysfunction due to edema and muscle traction. This can cause auditory dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of orthognathic surgery on the auditory status of patients. 54 consecutive patients who met the inclusion criteria underwent audiometric tests 24h preoperatively, and 48 h 6 weeks and 8 weeks postoperatively (2 weeks after maxillomandibular fixation removal). Surgery was on the maxilla, mandible or both. The types of movements were recorded. Audiometric

[Pre-orthognathic surgery in orthodontics: towards justification].

This work presents long term results of rhinopharyngeal desobstructions on nine years old patients. By using several techniques such as: tonsillectomies, adenoïdectomy, adenoïdotonsillectomies, luxation of inferior turbinates, partial turbinectomies or bilateral turbinectomies under endoscopic guidance, and then, following carefully the oral and nasal peak flows for a period as long as one or two years, it becomes obvious that the most efficient desobstruction procedure is accomplished through a combination of E.N.T. rhinopharyngeal procedures, i.e. adenoïdotonsillectomies and inferior turbine

Peripherally Induced Oromandibular Dystonia Following Orthognathic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Peripherally induced movement disorders are hyperkinetic conditions triggered by peripheral trauma or surgical intervention. Oromandibular dystonia (OMD), a focal dystonia affecting the masticatory and lingual muscles, is the most common peripherally induced movement disorder within the stomatognathic system. However, OMD following orthognathic surgery has rarely been reported. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, latency, and treatment outcomes of patients who developed OMD after orthognathic surgery in a retrospective single-center case series of

Esthetic Considerations In Minimally Invasive Orthognathic Surgery.

Orthognathic surgery has long been successfully utilized to correct dentofacial deformities to help facilitate improved oral function and facial esthetics. The treatment, however, has been associated with a high degree of complexity and severe postoperative morbidity. More recently, minimally invasive orthognathic surgical procedures have emerged that offer potential long-term benefits such as less morbidity, a lower inflammation response, improved postoperative comfort, and better esthetic outcomes. This article examines the concept of minimally invasive orthognathic surgery (MIOS), discussin

Gearing Effect in Clockwise Rotational Orthognathic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The standard procedure for managing skeletal class III malocclusion is maxillary advancement with mandibular setback. Occlusal plane-altering orthognathic surgery, such as jaw rotation, is useful as well. Although clockwise jaw rotation is a common procedure, its mechanism has not been well investigated. With this study, the authors aim to introduce the gearing effect to correct class III malocclusion in Asians by maxillary posterior impaction using clockwise rotation without advancing the maxilla. METHODS: Patients with class III correction with clockwise rotation of the maxillom

Maxillary Surgical Ciliated Cyst After Orthognathic Surgery.

Surgical ciliated cysts, also known as implantation cysts or postoperative maxillary cysts, are uncommon cystic formations predominantly arising in the posterior maxillary region after radical maxillary sinus surgery. Herein, we present the case of a 28-year-old male patient who had previously undergone orthognathic surgery and later experienced a minor car accident without major consequences. Approximately four years after surgery, the patient sought dental care due to the presence of a painless swelling in the maxillary region. Upon intraoral examination, the swelling extended from the area

Improved Virtual Planning for Bimaxillary Orthognathic Surgery.

Conventional model surgery planning for bimaxillary orthognathic surgery can be laborious, time-consuming and may contain potential errors; hence three-dimensional (3D) virtual orthognathic planning has been proven to be an efficient, reliable, and cost-effective alternative. In this report, the 3D planning is described for a patient presenting with a Class III incisor relationship on a Skeletal III base with pan facial asymmetry complicated by reverse overjet and anterior open bite. A combined scan data of direct cone beam computer tomography and indirect dental scan were used in the planning
