This report describes the case of a 69-year-old man with adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon who developed heterotopic ossification in a metastatic axillary lymph node. The areas of pathologic bone formation were characterized by the appearance of osteoblast-like cells at the surfaces of the mineral deposits. Immunostaining for alkaline phosphatase revealed a significant concentration of this enzyme in these cells and, to a lesser degree, on the apical membrane of the glandular cells of the adenocarcinoma adjacent to the ossification centers. Proliferating mesenchymal cells in close proximi

Heterotopic ossification (HO) denotes aberrant osteogenesis in extra-skeletal tissues, often associated with neurological disorders, total hip arthroplasty, and specific traumatic scenarios. Neurogenic heterotopic ossification manifests prominently subsequent to traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury, with Guillain-Barre Syndrome presenting an infrequent etiological link. This article details the case of a 56-year-old female diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, who developed neurogenic heterotopic ossification around both hips within two years of disease onset. The patient's medical h

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal formation of lamellar bone in soft tissue; the most frequent causes are total hip arthroplasty and trauma. Severe cases can lead to ankilosis with important impact on quality of life. Surgery is the elective treatment, but, especially in high-risk patients, it is important to prevent the re-formation of HO and, in these cases, radiotherapy (RT) can play an important role.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: we retrospectively analyzed a mono-institutional casistic of 30 patients (31 sites) at high risk for HO development, treated with surgery and pre-

Neurogenic heterotopic ossification of the hip is secondary to neurologic lesions such as cranial trauma, stroke, medullary injury or cerebral anoxia. We shall not deal here with the other etiologies of heterotopic ossification. There are numerous locations within the hip, depending on etiology and relations with adjacent neurovascular structures are sometimes close. Preoperative work-up should include contrast-enhanced CT; scintigraphy is non-contributive. Indications for surgery are decided in a multidisciplinary team meeting, with a contract laying out expected functional gain. It is this c

A case of extensive heterotopic ossification involving the left hip in a 16 year old girl who sustained non traumatic spinal paralysis at T4 ASIA scale A. This case demonstrates the practical difficulties facing clinicians involved in the rehabilitation of this paraplegic patient who required intervention before full maturation of her left hip heterotopic ossification (HO). The patient was developing a rapidly progressive fixed scoliosis and severe difficulty in achieving a proper seating posture. In addition there was difficulty with the application of a suitable orthosis to try and limit the

The development of heterotopic ossification (HO) as a complication of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) has not been previously reported. TEN, also known as Lyell's syndrome, is a rare but serious skin disorder that typically occurs after the administration of drugs, especially sulfonamides, barbiturates, phenytoin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. TEN is characterized by the development of large fluid-filled bullae with separation of large sheets of skin. Complications of TEN can include extensive denudation of skin with dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities, gastrointestinal hem

A retrospective study of 50 syndesmosis sprains in 44 football players was performed. Five patients (6 ankles) were lost to follow-up, allowing review of 44 injuries. Average follow-up was 47 months. The patients were evaluated for recurrent injury, overall ankle function, and for persistent ankle symptoms, including stiffness, pain, limping, and swelling. Follow-up radiographs of the injured ankle were obtained in 22 patients. The average return time to full activity was 31 days. Pain with pushing-off was a major factor preventing return to activity. At final followup, 36% of the patients com

AIMS: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after elbow trauma and can cause severe upper limb disability. Although multiple prognostic factors have been reported to be associated with the development of post-traumatic HO, no model has yet been able to combine these predictors more succinctly to convey prognostic information and medical measures to patients. Therefore, this study aimed to identify prognostic factors leading to the formation of HO after surgery for elbow trauma, and to establish and validate a nomogram to predict the probability of HO formation in such particul

INTRODUCTION: Systemic osteogenesis has been speculated to be involved in the pathogenesis of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). Our purpose was to compare the radiologic prevalence and severity of heterotopic ossification in foot tendons of Japanese patients with OPLL and to determine their association with systemic heterotopic ossification.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical and radiographic data of 114 patients with OPLL were collected from 2020 to 2022. Control data were extracted from a medical database of 362 patients with ankle radiographs. Achilles and plantar te

Endochondral ossification (EO) is a pivotal process during fracture healing and traumatic heterotopic ossification (HO), involving the cartilaginous matrix synthesis and mineralization. Unlike the extracellular matrix, the hyaluronan (HA)-rich pericellular matrix (PCM) directly envelops chondrocytes, serving as the frontline for extracellular signal reception and undergoing dynamic remodeling. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3), a secreted glycoprotein, facilitates HA matrix assembly and remodeling. However, it remains unclear whether PTX3 affects EO by regulating HA-rich PCM assembly of chondrocytes, thereby

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic mesenteric ossification (HMO) is a clinically rare condition characterized by the formation of bone tissue in the mesentery. The worldwide reporting of such cases is limited to just over 70 instances in the medical literature. The etiology of HMO remains unclear, but the disease is possibly induced by mechanical trauma, ischemia, or intra-left lower quadrant abdominal infection, leading to the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts. Here, we present a rare case of HMO that occurred in a 34-year-old male, who presented with left lower quadrant abdomin

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a debilitating pathology where ectopic bone develops in areas of soft tissue. HO can develop as a consequence of traumatic insult or as a result of dysregulated osteogenic signaling, as in the case of the orphan disease fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Traumatic HO (tHO) formation is mediated by the complex interplay of signaling between progenitor, inflammatory, and nerve cells, among others, making it a challenging process to understand. Research into the pathogenesis of genetically mediated HO (gHO) in FOP has established a pathway involving unin

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a condition where aberrant bone grows in tissues. This case study presents a rare complication of trauma and laparotomies, where the rapid and extensive occurrence of HO has delayed abdominal incision closure resulting in multiple surgeries and prolonged recovery. A 44-year-old man was retrieved after a truck accident resulting in multi-organ injuries. He required damage control trauma laparotomy followed by several relooks and multiple orthopaedic procedures. Despite several attempts, approximation of the laparostomy wound was not possible due to abdominal rig

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a possible complication of distal biceps tendon repair (DBTR). Several agents can prevent HO formation, although relatively few studies have investigated prophylaxis specifically after DBTR. The purposes of this study were to survey members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) to determine (1) what percentage use HO prophylaxis after DBTR; (2) type, dosage, and duration of prophylaxis used; and (3) use of single-incision or double-incision surgical technique. An anonymous electronic survey was distributed to ASES members to determine the use of HO

Background: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the presence of bone in soft tissue where bone normally does not exist. This can be acquired or inherited with the acquired form most often seen with either trauma, spinal cord injury, or central nervous system injury. HO most commonly affects the flexors and abductors of the hip, medial knees, and the shoulders and rarely affects the genitourinary (GU) system. Case Presentation: We discuss a 67-year-old Caucasian male patient who presented with left-sided ureteral obstruction. He was involved in an airplane accident in 2001 resulting in a spinal co

Heterotopic ossification (HO), the formation of ectopic bone in soft tissues, has been extensively studied in its two primary forms: post-traumatic HO (tHO) typically found in patients who have experienced musculoskeletal or neurogenic injury and in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), where it is genetically driven. Given that in both diseases HO arises via endochondral ossification, the molecular mechanisms behind both diseases have been postulated to be manifestations of similar pathways including those activated by BMP/TGFβ superfamily ligands. A significant step towards understand

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare genetic disorder of progressive extra-skeletal ossification, is the most disabling form of heterotopic ossification (HO) in humans. Most people with FOP carry an activating mutation in a BMP type I receptor gene, ACVR1 R206H, that promotes ectopic chondrogenesis and osteogenesis and in turn HO. Advances in elucidating the cellular and molecular events and mechanisms that lead to the ectopic bone formation are being made through the use of genetically engineered mouse models that recapitulate the human disease. We describe methods for inducing

Radiopacity in the maxillary sinus can be observed in various conditions, such as in the presence of lesions in the maxillary sinus or as a sequela of maxillary sinus surgery. This report describes the case of a 57-year-old female patient who had no previous history of surgical treatment or traumatic injury of the nose or maxillary sinus. Both maxillary sinuses were indistinguishable on panoramic radiography and showed signs of radiopacity. Computed tomography images revealed that the maxillary sinuses were filled with bony tissue and exhibited signs of sinus mucosal thickening. Biopsy results

Non-hereditary heterotopic ossification (NHHO) may occur after musculoskeletal trauma, central nervous system (CNS) injury, or surgery. We previously described circulating osteogenic precursor (COP) cells as a bone marrow-derived type 1 collagen+CD45+subpopulation of mononuclear adherent cells that are able of producing extraskeletal ossification in a murine in vivo implantation assay. In the current study, we performed a tissue analysis of COP cells in NHHO secondary to defined conditions, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebrovascular accident, trauma without neurologi

Put most simply, heterotopic ossification (HO) is the abnormal formation of bone at extraskeletal sites. HO can be classified into two main subtypes, genetic and acquired. Acquired HO is a common complication of major connective tissue injury, traumatic central nervous system injury, and surgical interventions, where it can cause significant pain and postoperative disability. A particularly devastating form of HO is manifested in the rare genetic disorder, fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), in which progressive heterotopic bone formation occurs throughout life, resulting in painful a
