Nephrectomy in an Asian small-clawed otter (Amblonyx cinereus) with pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis secondary to ureteral obstruction.

A 10-yr-old, captive, intact male Asian small-clawed otter (Amblonyx cinereus) with a history of bilateral nephrolithiasis was presented for acute-onset lethargy and inappetance of 5 days duration. On physical examination, the otter was about 8% dehydrated and a palpable fluid wave was present in the abdomen. An abdominal ultrasound revealed hydronephrosis of the left kidney and a hyperechoic structure present within the lumen of the left ureter, causing an obstruction. A urinalysis revealed struvite crystalluria, bacteriuria, and an elevated pH. Following 4 days of antibiotic therapy, a left

Redescription of Eucoleus schvalovoj (Nematoda: Capillariidae), an oesophageal parasite of the Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra, in Spain.

Eucoleus schvalovoj Kontrimavichus, 1963 (Nematoda: Capillariidae) is redescribed. The original description of this species was brief and inadequate in that it was based on just a few specimens removed from the Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Khabarovsk region, USSR. Detailed morphological study of several specimens of E. schvalovoj from the oesophagus of L. lutra from Spain revealed new characters, above all in males, and allows for a better characterisation of this species. Since its original description E. schvalovoj has only been recorded in Spain.

RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW OF DEXMEDETOMIDINEBUTORPHANOL-MIDAZOLAM OR MEDETOMIDINEBUTORPHANOL-MIDAZOLAM FOR ANESTHESIA OF SEA OTTERS (ENHYDRA LUTRIS ) UNDER PROFESSIONAL CARE.

A retrospective review of anesthetic events using dexmedetomidine-butorphanol-midazolam (DBM) or medetomidine-butorphanol-midazolam (MBM) for northern (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) and southern (Enhydra lutris nereis) sea otters under professional care was performed. From 2010 to 2023, 96 anesthetic procedures in total were reported across 32 sea otters for various diagnostic, surgical, or preventive health procedures. A subset of 57 anesthetic procedures in 28 apparently heathy sea otters was evaluated to report anesthetic milestones, physiologic values, and perianesthetic observations. Included i…

Parasite genotype is a risk factor for Sarcocystis neurona-associated mortality in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

The protozoal parasites Sarcocystis neurona and Toxoplasma gondii are important causes of mortality for threatened southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) in California. Sarcocystis neurona causes more sea otter deaths than T. gondii and has caused two mortality events, yet S. neurona is comparatively understudied. Little is known about the role of parasite genotype on the outcome of infection (fatal versus non-fatal) for S. neurona-infected sea otters. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of parasite genotype in addition to host and environmental factors (animal age, sex…

Prevalence, Structure, and Distribution of Novel Parasite Cysts Containing Dracunculus Species in River Otters ( Lontra canadensis) from Arkansas.

Adult female guinea worms ( Dracunculus spp.) usually are reported to occur singly in the extremities of their hosts, from which they deliver their larvae into the water through fistulae in the host's skin. We visually examined for the presence of worms in the fascia of the limbs of skinned carcasses of 184 river otters ( Lontra canadensis) harvested in Arkansas and report observations of cysts on wrists and ankles found on 12 otters. Cysts averaged 15.6 × 24.6 mm in diameter, were round to oval, and contained masses of up to 19 adult female Dracunculus sp. (mean 6.7). We speculate that high l…

Cholinesterase and monoamine oxidase activity in relation to mercury levels in the cerebral cortex of wild river otters.

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that is neurotoxic to many mammalian species. The present study was conducted to determine if the bioaccumulation of Hg by wild river otters (Lontra canadensis) could be related to variations in the activities of key neurochemical enzymes. River otters were collected from Ontario and Nova Scotia (Canada) during the trapping seasons, spanning 2002-2004, and their brains were dissected into the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. The activities of cholinesterase (ChE) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) were measured from each sample and correlated with concentrations of b…

Evidence for recovery of body mass and haptoglobin values of river otters following the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Levels of blood haptoglobin (Hp) and interleukin-6 immunoreactive protein (IL-6 ir) were significantly elevated in river otters (Lutra canadensis) inhabiting oiled areas of Prince William Sound, Alaska (USA) following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. By May and June 1992, however, such differences were not apparent. Mean body mass of otters, adjusted for sex, age-class, and total length with analysis of covariance, differed between oiled and non-oiled areas from 1990 to 1992, but were nearly identical by May and June 1992. We propose that river otters may be recovering from chronic effects …

Determinants of Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) Latrine Occurrence and Diet in the Karnali River, Nepal.

Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) depends on riverine prey and bank habitat for foraging and scent-marking, but evidence from the large, braided rivers in Nepal is limited. We assessed habitat correlates of latrine presence patterns and diet composition of Smooth-coated Otter in the lower section (39 km) of the Karnali River. Latrine presence-absence was surveyed across 70-belt transects distributed along both banks of the river with 21.43% presence and modelled using generalised linear model (binomial) with river characteristics. Diet analysis was done through hard-component analy

A type II variant of Toxoplasma gondii infects the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in southern Italy.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is a widespread zoonosis capable to affect a wide range of warm-blooded vertebrates. In the past two decades, T. gondii emerged as a significant aquatic pathogen with some pathogenic atypical genotypes isolated and characterized from stranded marine mammals. In contrast, no information is available for mammals in freshwater environment. Although otters are considered highly susceptible to T. gondii infection, to date molecular evidence of T. gondii in Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) does not exist. We report the first molecular ev…

First Report of an Adult Tapeworm (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea) in a Southern Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris nereis).

We present a novel case of an intestinal cestode infection in a southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis). The cestode species Diphyllobothrium tetrapterum (syn. Diplogonoporus tetrapterus) was confirmed genetically. Stable isotope analysis of whiskers collected from the sea otter did not confirm the consumption of fish as the route of exposure.

Locally acquired disseminated histoplasmosis in a northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) in Alaska, USA.

Histoplasmosis of local origin has not been reported in humans or wildlife in Alaska, and the disease has never been reported in a free-ranging marine mammal. In 2005 a northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) was found on Kodiak Island, Alaska, at 57° latitude north, far outside the known distribution of Histoplasma capsulatum. The animal died of disseminated histoplasmosis. Microorganisms consistent with Histoplasma sp. were observed on histopathology, and H. capsulatum was identified by PCR and sequencing. We suggest migratory seabirds or aerosol transmission through prevailing winds may

Molecular and morphological confirmation of Profilicollis altmani as the cause of acanthocephalan peritonitis in California sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

Acanthocephalan peritonitis (AP; trans-intestinal migration of acanthocephalan parasites into the peritoneal cavity resulting in severe peritonitis), is a common cause of mortality in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis). Although Profilicollis spp. acanthocephalans have been implicated in these infections, the species causing AP has been an important unresolved question for decades. We used morphological and molecular techniques to characterize acanthocephalans from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and peritoneal omentum of eighty necropsied southern sea otters. Only P. altmani was foun…

MORTALITY TRENDS IN NORTHERN SEA OTTERS ( ENHYDRA LUTRIS KENYONI) COLLECTED FROM THE COASTS OF WASHINGTON AND OREGON, USA (2002-15).

During 2002-15 we examined the causes of mortality in a population of northern sea otters ( Enhydra lutris kenyoni). Beachcast sea otters were collected primarily from the US coast of Washington. Although there are no permanent sea otter residents in Oregon, several beachcast otters were collected from the Oregon coast. Infectious diseases were the primary cause of death (56%) for otters we examined. Sarcocystosis was the leading infectious cause of death (54%) and was observed throughout the study period. Some infectious diseases, such as morbilliviral encephalitis and leptospirosis, were doc…

High prevalence of proposed Müllerian duct remnant cysts on the spermatic duct in wild Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) from Sweden.

The spermatic ducts (vasa deferentia) of 235 otters (Lutra lutra) found dead between 1999 and 2012 in Sweden were examined for presence of paraductular cysts. Single or multiple elongated uni- or bilateral cysts parallel to the spermatic duct were noted in 72% of the examined males. The cysts were adjacent to, but did not communicate with the lumen of the spermatic duct, and were usually located within a few centimeters of the testis and epididymis. The cysts are proposed to be congenital Müllerian duct remnants. Other morphologic abnormalities in the reproductive organs were not noted within …

Defining the risk landscape in the context of pathogen pollution: Toxoplasma gondii in sea otters along the Pacific Rim.

Pathogens entering the marine environment as pollutants exhibit a spatial signature driven by their transport mechanisms. The sea otter (Enhydra lutris), a marine animal which lives much of its life within sight of land, presents a unique opportunity to understand land-sea pathogen transmission. Using a dataset on Toxoplasma gondii prevalence across sea otter range from Alaska to California, we found that the dominant drivers of infection risk vary depending upon the spatial scale of analysis. At the population level, regions with high T. gondii prevalence had higher human population density a
