Defining the polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has challenged clinicians for many years. The clinical, hormonal and morphological definitions of PCOS have their own limitations and do not correspond exactly. In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the role of anti-Müllerian hormone or Müllerian-inhibiting substance as a marker of ovarian reserve during assisted reproduction treatment and other reproductive processes. It is concluded that anti-Müllerian hormone is superior to other markers in predicting oocyte yield in IVF and appears useful in monitoring ovarian response in a range of reproductive states and disorders. This article reviews the literature published during 2006 and 2007.
