Raman spectroscopic study of "The Malatesta": a Renaissance painting?

Raman spectroscopic analysis of the pigments on an Italian painting described as a "Full Length Portrait of a Gentleman", known also as the "Malatesta", and attributed to the Renaissance period has established that these are consistent with the historical research provenance undertaken earlier. Evidence is found for the early 19th Century addition of chrome yellow to highlighted yellow ochre areas in comparison with a similar painting executed in 1801 by Sir Thomas Lawrence of John Kemble in the role of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. The Raman data are novel in that no analytical studies have prev

Spectroscopic characterization of a contemporary Indian miniature painting.

A case study on a contemporary Indian miniature was carried out through the application of different spectroscopic techniques. Painting support, pigments, and dyes were largely characterized by means of energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence and Raman microspectroscopy directly on the artwork. Regarding golden motifs and silvered areas, for which these techniques have not provided enough information, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy was used as a complementary technique. The painting support was identified as the Bombyx mori silk. Among the colorant

Antifouling biocides in discarded marine paint particles.

Antifouling paint fragments collected from marinas and leisure boat maintenance facilities and in the vicinity of abandoned boats have been chemically characterised. High concentrations of Cu (23-380mgg(-1)) and Zn (14-160mgg(-1)) in the samples (n=14) are consistent with the use of these metals in the principal biocidal and non-biocidal pigments in contemporary antifouling formulations. Up to about 2% and 7% of the respective metals were solvent-extractable, suggesting that organo-forms of Cu and Zn (e.g. pyrithiones) were also present. Of the organic biocides, dichlofluanid was present in mo

Preserved painting creativity in an artist with Alzheimer's disease.

Creativity in any of its forms, either visual, musical, literary or performing arts, may be conceived as a cognitive capability, and should be actively explored in relation to patients with Alzheimer disease and related dementias, even when other cognitive functions do not allow us to even communicate with them. We are reporting the case of a talented artist with the diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer disease (AD) with progressive cognitive impairment but with preservation of her creativity until very late in the course of the disease.

[Effect of painting work on alcoholic liver dysfunction].

The effect of painting on alcoholic liver dysfunction was investigated. The subjects were male workers engaged in small-scale enterprises under contract to with heavy industries. Painting involved metal cleaning and painting, and the air concentrations of organic solvents were frequently high. The study population consisted of 1,157 male workers over 40 yr of age. Of them, 85 were painters engaged for a mean duration of 20.9 +/- 9.8 yr. There was no significant difference in GOT and GPT between painters who did not drink and non-painters who did not drink, but GOT and GPT were significantly hi

Painting technique for staining the anterior lens capsule.

We describe a technique of capsule staining called capsule painting. Using a Khokhar capsule painting cannula, the dye is spread directly over the anterior capsule but to no other part of the anterior chamber. There is minimal turbulence in the anterior chamber as there is no need to replace the injected viscoelastic material. The use of minimal dye and viscoelastic material reduces the cost of surgery.

[Selective chromosome painting using in situ hybridization].

A method of in situ hybridization with entire chromosome-specific DNA libraries for visualizing individual human chromosomes has been developed and applied to the detection of structural aberrations in both metaphase and interphase cells. Unlabeled human genomic DNA is used to inhibit the cross-hybridization of repetitive sequences in the library that bind to multiple chromosomes. The remaining single-stranded DNA is hybridized to specimens of interest and detected with fluorescent or enzyme labeled biotin conjugates following post-hybridization washes. This general approach is called "chromos

The effect of povidone-iodine paint on fungal infection.

Povidone-Iodine (Betadine) Paint was used in thirteen patients with a proven fungal infection. Ten patients had pityriasis versicolor, two had trichophyton rubrum and one M. canis. In the pityriasis versicolor group, seven out of the ten patients were either improved or cleared up completely within 7 days. There were no adverse reactions in this group of patients and the material proved quite acceptable to them. Scanning electron micrographs were carried out on three of the patients and demonstrated the decrease in fungal elements after treatment and clinical improvement.

Contact dermatitis in children due to face paints.

A four-year-old girl in whom severe, acute contact dermatitis of the face developed following a face painting party is presented herein. Subsequent investigation established that the paints consisted of tempera pigments mixed in a full-strength commercial dishwashing liquid. Similar contact dermatitis developed in at least five other children, all of whom had continued to wear the face paints overnight while sleeping. The dishwashing liquid was implicated as the causative factor in the eruption. Since a full-strength commercial dishwashing detergent may cause severe irritant contact dermatitis

Chromosome painting in plants: history and future perspectives.

Chromosome painting was developed in mammalian species nearly four decades ago and rapidly became a powerful tool for chromosome identification, comparative cytogenetics, and evolutionary genome analysis. Comparative chromosome painting among diverse mammals generated much of the foundational knowledge of chromosome structure, chromosomal rearrangements, and karyotype evolution before the advent of whole-genome sequencing. Although chromosome painting was first demonstrated in plants in 2001, its applications remained largely restricted to a few plant lineages until the development of oligonuc

Telomerase detection using a DNA-PAINT strategy.

Telomerase plays an important role in maintaining the length of telomere during cell division and is recognized as a new kind of biomarkers for cancer diagnosis. In this work, we present a brand new telomerase detection strategy based on a DNA points accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT) like strategy. With an extraordinary spatial resolution (∼10 nm), the DNA-PAINT based strategy offers several advantages. First, it avoids complicated polymerase chain reaction and electrophoresis procedures. Second, it enables super resolution imaging of the reaction products with a hig
