The circulation of the South-east Asian/American (AS/AM) dengue 2 virus (DENV-2) genotype in the Americas has been associated with a high rate of severe disease. From 1993, the year DENV was reintroduced in Panama, until 2011 there were 29 dengue-associated deaths, 17 of which occurred in 2011, the most severe outbreak with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 44% (17 deaths out of 38 severe dengue cases). A 22-year-old man had Salmonella panama osteomyelitis of the left distal tibia. He had endured a period of untreated diarrhea without fever 6 years before. The osteomyelitis was treated successfully with surgical debridement followed by 9 weeks of oral cotrimoxazole 960 mg twice daily. Salmonella osteomyelitis is rare. Most cases occur in patients with sickle cell anemia. We studied the clinical and histopathology findings of the first proved case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Panama. A sixty-five-years-old female patient referred from Santiago de Veraguas was admitted to Santo Tomás Hospital with a progressive clinical picture of dementia, incoordination and generalized myoclonia. The electroencephalogram showed periodic paroxysmal activity. The patient died eight months after initiated the disease. The cerebral histopathologic study was characteristic of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: status spongiform, neuronal loss and non-inflammatory gliosis was found.

METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study reviewed individuals who sustained a snakebite from 2007-2008. Demographic data, disease severity, species of snake, treatment, infectious complications and antibiotic usage were collected from the hospital records.

INTRODUCTION: Phosphoglycerate mutase deficiency (PGAM) is a rare metabolic myopathy that results in terminal block in glycogenolysis. Clinically, patients with PGAM deficiency are asymptomatic, except when they engage in brief, strenuous efforts, which may trigger myalgias, cramps, muscle necrosis, and myoglobinuria. We identified the incidence and primary clinical characteristics of histoplasmosis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in our hospital. Disseminated histoplasmosis is a common and severe disease among patients with AIDS in Panama and should be suspected for patients with a CD4 cell count of <100 cells/ microL, fever, respiratory symptoms, weight loss, and diarrhea.
