Finally, implications of this study for clinical practice and future research in …

This article examines the relationship between the five-factor model (FFM) and dimensional ICD-10 personality disorders. In a follow-up study of a child and adolescent psychiatric cohort, former patients and controls were assessed with NEO-FFI and the IPDE interview (CD-10 personality disorder). Full data were available for 229 subjects (149 former patients, 80 controls). Multiple regression analysis showed that the five factors of the FFM as independent variables explained between 5% (schizoid personality disorder) and 32% (anxious personality disorder) of the variance of ICD-10 dimensional p

While considerable data support the relationship between childhood trauma and adult personality pathology in general, there is little research investigating the specific relationships between different types of childhood maltreatment and adult personality disorders. The present study tested a model incorporating five a priori hypotheses regarding the association between distinct forms of childhood maltreatment and personality pathology in 231 psychiatric patients using multiple self-report measures (Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4th Edition, Child Trauma Questionnaire, Conflict in Tacti

The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of DSM-III-R personality disorders in depressed patients treated in primary care, and to examine the effect of sertraline or citalopram on the diagnosis of personality disorders. A total of 308 patients with a major depressive disorder were assessed with the Swedish version of the Structured Clinical Interview for Personality Disorders (SCID) screen questionnaire, before and after 24 weeks double-blind treatment with sertraline (50-150 mg/day) or citalopram (20-60 mg/day). Following treatment, significant reductions in the frequency of

Both childhood malnutrition and maltreatment are associated with mental health problems that can persist into adulthood. Previously we reported that in Barbados, those with a history of infant malnutrition were more likely to report having experienced childhood maltreatment. Few studies, however, address the long-term outcomes of those who have been exposed to both. We assessed the unique and combined associations of a history of early malnutrition and childhood maltreatment with personality pathology in mid-adulthood in participants of the 47-year longitudinal Barbados Nutrition Study. We use

In this report, modified DSM-III criteria were applied to all the available interviews with adoptees from the greater Copenhagen sample of the Danish Adoption Study of Schizophrenia. In the adoptees, reasonable agreement was found between our DSM-III diagnoses and the original diagnoses using global DSM-II-based criteria by Kety et al for their categories of chronic and acute, but not borderline, schizophrenia. Comparing DSM-III-based diagnoses in adoptees and relatives, schizophrenia, schizotypal personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder were all significantly more common in the…

Eighty-two subjects with panic disorder completed the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ) before treatment and again after a period of relatively stable improvement 3 years later. At baseline, panic subjects scored higher than normal control subjects, who had been matched for age and sex, on avoidant, dependent, histrionic, and paranoid personality subscales. Improvement in panic symptoms after 3 years was associated with reductions in these same subscale scores. Examination of individual items that distinguished panic from normal subjects showed themes of dependency, lack of self-confi

METHODS: Individual personality disorders (paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, antisocial, avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive), lifetime mood, anxiety, eating and substance misuse disorders were diagnosed utilising validated semi-structured clinical interviews (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders, Research Version, Non

Personality disorders are generally thought not to change by much over time. We assessed the personality status of 202 patients who had a defined diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM)-III neurotic disorder, dysthymia, panic disorder, or generalised anxiety. All patients had had drug and psychological treatment in a randomised controlled trial. 12 years after entry to the study, we reassessed the personality status of 178 (88%) of these patients using the same test (personality assessment schedule). The personality traits of patients in the cluster B flamboyant group (antisocial, histrionic)

Personality disorders related to schizophrenia were described since Kraepelin's works. According to the DMS III-R those disorders are gathered into the A cluster of personality disorders consisting in: schizotypal, schizoid and paranoid personality disorders. Schizotypal and paranoid personalities are biologically linked to schizophrenia and support the concept of "schizophrenia spectrum". Until now such a link is not found between schizoid personality and schizophrenia. Future research in the field of those personality disorders will bring a better knowledge in the pathogenesis of schizophren…

Paraphrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder characterized by a strong delusional component with preservation of thought and personality. It was first introduced as a disorder associated with paranoid dementia and paranoia, but with less personality deterioration than schizophrenia and without fulfilling the clinical features of a delusional disorder. This classic diagnostic entity is not currently listed in main diagnostic systems, rendering delusional disorders difficult to classify in cases that resemble the concept of paraphrenia. We revisit the concept of paraphrenia through a critical rev

BACKGROUND: The high co-occurrence between borderline personality disorder and affective disorders has led many to believe that borderline personality disorder should be considered as part of an affective spectrum. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the prevalence of affective disorders are higher for patients with borderline personality disorder than for patients with other personality disorders.
METHODS: In a national cross-sectional study of patients receiving mental health treatment in Norway (N = 36 773), we determined whether psychiatric outpatients with borderline pers

BACKGROUND: Psychotic spectrum features in borderline personality disorder (PD) are a long-standing phenomenon, but remarkably, to date, they have not been the focus of many empirical studies. Moreover, the comparative studies that acknowledge their links to affective psychoses are even more scarce. Likewise, the contributions of empirical research on the DSM-5 dimensional approach to this topic are also uncommon. This study seeks to identify the best set of pathological personality traits and/or symptoms that are predictors of psychotic features (psychoticism and ideation paranoid symptoms) i

Serious mental illness is associated with a higher risk of violent interpersonal behavior. Characteristic traits denoting a psychopatho-logical picture such as schizophrenia, depression, a borderline, or narcissistic, antisocial, or paranoid personality disorder, are frequently observed in the personality of those who have committed one or more murders. For example, mass murderers are affected by a delusional syndrome with a persecution fixation, that develops in a subject with a paranoid, anacastic personality disorder. An abnormal mental frame-work develops as a consequence of continual expe…
