Deep neural networks have revolutionized computer vision, and their object representations across layers match coarsely with visual cortical areas in the brain. However, whether these representations exhibit qualitative patterns seen in human perception or brain representations remains unresolved. Here, we recast well-known perceptual and neural phenomena in terms of distance comparisons, and ask whether they are present in feedforward deep neural networks trained for object recognition. Some phenomena were present in randomly initialized networks, such as the global advantage effect, sparsene

The ability to suppress distractions is essential to successful completion of goal-directed behaviors. Several behavioral studies have recently provided strong evidence that learned suppression may be particularly efficient in reducing distractor interference. Expectations about a distractor's repeated location, color, or even presence are rapidly learned and used to attenuate interference. In this study, we use a visual search paradigm in which a color singleton, which is known to capture attention, occurs within blocks with high or low frequency. The behavioral results show reduced singleton

It is difficult to recognize an object that falls in the peripheral visual field; it is even more difficult when there are other objects surrounding it. This effect, known as crowding, could be due to interactions between the low-level parts or features of the surrounding objects. Here, we investigated whether crowding can also occur selectively between higher level object representations. Many studies have demonstrated that upright faces, unlike most other objects, are coded holistically. Therefore, in addition to featural crowding within a face (M. Martelli, N. J. Majaj, & D. G. Pelli, 2005)

The consistency of the major positive component (P100) of the full-field pattern-reversal response provides a clinically valuable and objective means of detecting visual field defects. Its normally symmetrical distribution about the midline of the occipital scalp results from the summation of two highly asymmetric half-field responses, each of which shows the positive component well lateralised with a widespread distribution on the ipsilateral side. Stimulation of each eye in patients with bitemporal and homonymous hemianopias results in two characteristic patterns of asymmetry, named 'crossed

Neural and computational evidence suggests that perceptual decisions depend on an evidence accumulation process. The gradual reveal fMRI method, which prolongs a decision to match the slow temporal resolution of fMRI measurements, has classified dorsal visual stream regions as "Action" (alternatively, "Moment of Recognition" or "Commitment") and ventral visual stream regions as "Accumulator." Previous gradual reveal fMRI studies, however, only tested actions that were in response to decisions and, thus, related to evidence accumulation. To fully dissociate the contribution of sensory, decision

A controversy has recently developed regarding the hypothesis that developmental dyslexia may be caused, in some cases, by a reduced visual attention span (VAS). To examine this hypothesis, independent of phonological abilities, researchers tested the ability of dyslexic participants to recognize arrays of unfamiliar visual characters. Employing this test, findings were rather equivocal: dyslexic participants exhibited poor performance in some studies but normal performance in others. The present study explored four methodological differences revealed between the two sets of studies that might

In everyday life, we can often identify when an object has been subjected to some kind of transformation that alters its shape. For example, we can usually tell whether a can has been crushed, or a cookie has been bitten. Conversely, our ability to recognize objects is often robust across such shape transformations: we can still identify the can even though it has been dented. This ability to determine and discount the causal history of objects suggests the visual system may partially decompose the observed shape of an object into original (untransformed) elements plus the transformations that

Italian children (n = 125) were classified into dyslexics, poor readers and ordinary readers. The dyslexics were further classified into the Boder and Bakker subtypes. The children were tested with the form-resolving field (FRF), which measures central and peripheral visual recognition. Dyslexics show higher correct identification of letters in the periphery, supporting the notion of a different distribution of lateral masking. A numerical characterization of individual FRFs--C2R--reliably distinguishes between dyslexics and ordinary readers. The wider distribution of recognition, similar acro

The domain-general ability to recognize objects at the subordinate level (o) is most often tested in the visual modality. However, previous work has evidenced a strong relationship between visual and auditory o abilities, suggesting that o may be multimodal. We measured this relationship using a structural equation modeling approach. We found a strong relationship (r = .79) between visual and auditory o. There were similarly strong relationships between spatial ability and both visual (r = .73) and auditory (r = .63) o. When the shared influence of general ability was controlled for, the relat

The development of large datasets of natural images has galvanized progress in psychology, neuroscience, and computer science. Notably, the THINGS database constitutes a collective effort towards understanding of human visual knowledge by accumulating rich data on a shared set of visual object concepts across several studies. In this paper, we introduce Drawing of THINGS ( DoT ), a novel dataset of 28,627 human drawings of 1854 diverse object concepts, sampled systematically from concrete picturable and nameable nouns in the American English language, mirroring the structure of the THINGS imag

Research suggests that items from similar spatiotemporal contexts are more likely to be retrieved together. Here, we sought to test whether preserving temporal order from encoding to test might lead to a retrieval benefit. Then, we tested the participants using test items that were either presented in the same order as during encoding, or the order of items was different due to it being randomized. Across two experiments, we found that maintaining the same temporal order did not improve overall memory performance in the visual old/new recognition task we used. Next, we show that conditional-re

Face processing has several distinctive hallmarks that researchers have attributed either to face-specific mechanisms or to extensive experience distinguishing faces. Here, we examined the face-processing hallmark of selective attention failure--as indexed by the congruency effect in the composite paradigm--in a domain of extreme expertise: chess. Among 27 experts, we found that the congruency effect was equally strong with chessboards and faces. Further, comparing these experts with recreational players and novices, we observed a trade-off: Chess expertise was positively related to the congru

Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder associated with difficulties recognising and discriminating faces. In some cases, the perceptual deficits seen in DP appear to be face-specific. However, DP is known to be a heterogeneous condition, and many cases undoubtedly exhibit impaired perception of other complex objects. There are several well-documented parallels between body and face perception; for example, faces and bodies are both thought to recruit holistic analysis and engage similar regions of visual cortex. In light of these similarities, individuals wh

This study examined temporal processing in relation to Chinese reading acquisition and impairment. The performances of 26 Chinese primary school children with developmental dyslexia on tasks of visual and auditory temporal order judgement, rapid naming, visual-orthographic knowledge, morphological, and phonological awareness were compared with those of 26 reading level ability controls (RL) and 26 chronological age controls (CA). Dyslexic children performed worse than the CA group but similar to the RL group on measures of accurate processing of auditory and visual-order stimuli, rapid naming,

Human adults associate different views of an identity much better for familiar than for unfamiliar faces. However, a robust and consistent neural index of this behavioral face identity familiarity effect (FIFE)-not found in non-human primate species-is lacking. Here we provide such a neural FIFE index, measured implicitly and with one fixation per face. Fourteen participants viewed 70 s stimulation sequences of a large set (n = 40) of widely variable natural images of a face identity at a rate of 6 images/second (6 Hz). Different face identities appeared every 5th image (1.2 Hz). In a sequence

The aim of this study was to investigate how the other-race and baby schema effects interacted during face perception and recognition processes. 384 pictures representing Caucasian and non-Caucasian faces of infants and adults were shown to 24 Caucasian adult participants in an old/new recognition task. EEG/ERPs were recorded during face encoding and a successive memory session. ERP data showed a baby schema effect on N170, anterior N2 and P300 responses, which were larger to infant than adult faces, regardless of ethnicity. Conversely, an ORE was found, but only for adults faces, with N170 an

Prediction errors arising from contextual violations play a fundamental role in learning and memory, yet their effects remain controversial. While some research suggests prediction errors enhance memory for incongruent information, other evidence shows that schema-congruent events are better remembered. This study investigates how contextual congruency during encoding affects both recognition memory and retrieval of fine-grained perceptual details. Using object-scene pairings, we examined whether predictions based on memory schemas differentially influence the encoding of congruent versus inco

Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP) are characterized by severe face recognition deficits, yet it remains unknown how they are hindered in the process of unfamiliar face learning. Here we tracked the changes of neural activation during unfamiliar face repetition in DP with fMRI to reveal their neural deficits in learning unfamiliar faces. At the perceptual level, we found that the bilateral fusiform face area (FFA) in individuals with DP showed attenuated repetition suppression for faces, suggesting an inefficient perceptual analysis for learned faces. At the mnemonic level, indi

For simplicity, contemporary models of written-word recognition and reading have unspecified feature/letter levels-they predict that the visually similar substituted-letter nonword PEQPLE is as effective at activating the word PEOPLE as the visually dissimilar substituted-letter nonword PEYPLE. Previous empirical evidence on the effects of visual similarly across letters during written-word recognition is scarce and nonconclusive. To examine whether visual similarity across letters plays a role early in word processing, we conducted two masked priming lexical decision experiments (stimulus-ons

Comprehensive models of derived polymorphemic word recognition skill in developing readers, with an emphasis on children with reading difficulty (RD), have not been developed. The purpose of the present study was to model individual differences in polymorphemic word recognition ability at the item level among 5th-grade children (N = 173) oversampled for children with RD using item-response crossed random-effects models. We distinguish between two subtypes of RD children with word recognition problems, those with early-emerging RD and late-emerging RD. An extensive set of predictors representin
