Axillary arch muscle and pectoralis quartus: an unusual combination of two variant supernumerary muscles in the axillary region - a case report.

Variant anatomy in the axillary region is of great clinical significance. It is one of the most frequently accessed regions for radical dissection surgery. During routine dissection of embalmed cadavers, we found a rare case of two accessory muscular slips emerging from the lateral border of latissimus dorsi (LD) and the inferolateral border of pectoralis major (PM), crossing the neurovascular structures in the axilla and merging distally together to the brachial fascia at the upper end of humerus below the bicipital groove. The accessory slip from LD is commonly referred to as the "axillary a

[Axillary vertical incision thoracotomy sparing pectoralis major muscle and latissimus dorsi muscle: an approach for patent ductus arteriosus].

The technique of an axillary vertical incision thoracotomy sparing pectoralis major muscle and latissimus dorsi muscle for a closure of patent ductus arteriosus is presented. After an mid-axillary vertical incision, serratus anterior muscle is incised on the third intercostal space between pectoralis major muscle and latissimus dorsi muscle. The space between serratus anterior muscle and rib cage (Spatium intermusc. thoracale) is dissected with a finger, through this space the 3rd intercostal thoracotomy is performed in the axillary and dorsal portion. The ventral part of intercostal muscle is

Prophylactic pectoralis major flap to compensate for increased risk of pharyngocutaneous fistula in laryngectomy patients with low skeletal muscle mass (PECTORALIS): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Total laryngectomy (TL) is a surgical procedure commonly performed on patients with advanced laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma. One of the most common postoperative complications following TL is the development of a pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF), characterized by a communication between the neopharynx and the skin. PCF can lead to extended hospital stays, delayed oral feeding, and compromised quality of life. The use of a myofascial pectoralis major flap (PMMF) as an onlay technique during pharyngeal closure has shown potential in reducing PCF rates in high risk patients for

The effect of sex and slaughter age on the quality of the breast muscle (Pectoralis major) in pheasants housed in aviaries.

The aim of the present study was to compare the proximate composition, fatty acid and amino acid profiles, and physicochemical properties of the breast (Pectoralis major, PM) muscle in female and male pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) raised in aviaries on a farm and slaughtered at 21, 23, and 25 weeks of age (10 females - hens and 10 males - roosters per age group). Both sex and slaughter age had a significant effect on the quality of the PM muscle. However, age influenced a higher number of the analyzed quality attributes. The PM muscle of female pheasants had lower (P ≤ 0.05) collagen content

Pectoralis major muscle flap reconstruction after a total laryngectomy widened anteriorly: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The pectoralis major flap is one of the leading regional pedicled flaps for reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, particularly in oncology after tumor resection. Despite the increasing use of free flaps, this type of flap is still highly recommended in defined indications. It is a highly reliable flap in terms of viability. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a man treated in our ENT department for a squamous cell carcinoma of the three laryngeal stages, anteriorly very extensive and requiring total laryngectomy extended to the skin and subcutaneous pl

Reliability of measuring pectoralis minor muscle resting length in subjects with and without signs of shoulder impingement.

BACKGROUND: Pectoralis minor adaptive shortening may change scapula resting position and scapular kinematics during arm elevation. A reliable and clinically feasible method for measuring pectoralis minor length will be useful for clinical decision making when evaluating and treating individuals with shoulder pain and dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate intrarater, interrater, and between-day reliability of a pectoralis minor (PM) muscle length measurement in subjects with and without signs of shoulder impingement. METHOD: A convenience sample of 100 individuals (50 asymptomatic and 50 sympt

Histology, composition, and quality traits of chicken Pectoralis major muscle affected by wooden breast abnormality.

Only a few years ago, the poultry industry began to face a recent abnormality in breast meat, known as wooden breast, which frequently overlaps with white striping. This study aimed to assess the impact of wooden breast abnormality on quality traits of meat. For this purpose, 32 normal (NRM), 32 wooden (WB), and 32 wooden and white-striped (WB/WS) Pectoralis major muscles were selected from the same flock of heavy broilers (males, Ross 708, weighing around 3.7 kg) in the deboning area of a commercial processing plant at 3 h postmortem and used to assess histology, proximate (moisture, protein,

Development of the pectoral perforator flap and the deltopectoral perforator flap pedicled with the pectoralis major muscle flap.

PURPOSE: Because thinning of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap is impossible due to blood circulation, it is difficult to produce thin flaps. Although the pectoral flap and the deltopectoral flap are the best flaps that provide a highly desirable color-texture match to facial skin, their reach is restricted and they require resection in 2 stages. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new method of elevating a flap and to resolve these problems. METHODS: First, include the third intercostal perforating branch of the internal thoracic artery in the skin paddle and, outward therefrom, d

Pectoralis Major Muscle Necrosis After Selective Arterial Embolization: A Case Report With Reconstructive Considerations.

The pectoralis major (PM) muscle is commonly used in reconstruction because of its robust vascular supply from the thoracoacromial artery, although vascular dominance varies among individuals. Transcatheter arterial embolization is effective for hemostasis but may risk ischemia when a dominant pedicle is compromised. We describe a case of delayed PM muscle necrosis after selective arterial embolization for traumatic chest wall hemorrhage. A 76-year-old man with diabetes mellitus, pancreatic head carcinoma under chemotherapy, and polymyalgia rheumatica treated with prednisolone for a prolonged

An Analysis of the Efficacy of Deep Learning-Based Pectoralis Muscle Segmentation in Chest CT for Sarcopenia Diagnosis.

Sarcopenia is the loss of skeletal muscle function and mass and is a poor prognostic factor. This condition is typically diagnosed by measuring skeletal muscle mass at the L3 level. Chest computed tomography (CT) scans do not include the L3 level. We aimed to determine if these scans can be used to diagnose sarcopenia and thus guide patient management and treatment decisions. This study compared the ResNet-UNet, Recurrent Residual UNet, and UNet3 + models for segmenting and measuring the pectoralis muscle area in chest CT images. A total of 4932 chest CT images were collected from 1644 patient

Pectoralis Major Muscle Morbidity After Submuscular Silicone-based Breast Reconstruction: A Systematic Review.

Silicone implants or tissue expanders placed under the pectoralis major (PM) muscle are often used for breast reconstruction. However, the disruption of PM insertions, which is often an inevitable part of the surgical procedure, is known to cause PM morbidity and, subsequently, problems with the use of the ipsilateral arm. In this systematic review, we present current knowledge regarding the effect of submuscular silicone-based breast reconstruction on the function of PM and the ipsilateral arm. A search of the relevant English literature was performed through PubMed and ten eligible studies w

Mitochondrial dysfunction and calcium dyshomeostasis in the pectoralis major muscle of broiler chickens with wooden breast myopathy.

The incidence of wooden breast (WB) meat of commercial broiler chicken has been increasing in recent years. Histological examination found that the occurrence of WB myopathy was accompanied by the pectoralis major (PM) muscle damage. So far, the potential mechanisms are not fully understood. This study aimed to explore the underlying mechanism of the damage of WB-affected PM muscle caused by changes in mitochondrial function, mitochondrial redox status and Ca2+ homeostasis. A total of 80 market-age Arbor Acres male broiler chickens were sampled and categorized into control (CON) and WB groups

Pectoralis major muscle atrophy is associated with mitochondrial energy wasting in cachectic patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by involuntary and pathological weight loss, mainly due to skeletal muscle wasting, resulting in a decrease in patients' quality of life, response to cancer treatments, and survival. Our objective was to investigate skeletal muscle alterations in cachectic cancer patients. METHODS: This is a prospective study of patients managed for pancreatic or colorectal cancer with an indication for systemic chemotherapy (METERMUCADIG - NCT02573974). One lumbar CT image was used to determine body composition. Patients were divided into

The role of the unilateral pectoralis major muscle flap in the treatment of deep sternal wound infection and dehiscence.

Deep sternal wound infection and dehiscence has been classified as complex wound, and its treatment is a challenge for the surgeon. There are many flap choices for its treatment, each one having advantages and drawbacks. The article by Wang et al. evidenced that the unilateral pectoralis major muscle flap is a simple and effective option for wound closure resulting from sternotomy dehiscence in infants and children. The report discussed herein highlights that the unilateral pectoralis major muscle flap has been a good and feasible option for the reconstruction of the sternal wound in adults, a

Pectoralis muscle metastases from breast cancer in a young patient detected by automated breast ultrasound.

Metastases to the skeletal muscle from breast cancer represent an unusual and rare condition. We present the case of a 27-year-old female with left breast cancer (IDC NST G3) who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by conservativesurgery (sectorectomy and lymphadenectomy) and radiation therapy. Two months after the end of radiotherapy she presented with a 2 mm skin lesion and she was referred for a screening ultrasound. The screening automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) revealed local recurrence and pectoralis metastases, lesions evaluated also by magnetic resonance imaging. The diagnosi

The versatility of pectoralis major muscle and musculocutaneous flaps in the reconstruction of the oral cavity and of the anterior chest wall.

Musculocutaneous flaps, allowing one stage reconstructions and reducing the stay in hospital and rehabilitation period, have revolutionised modern plastic surgery. Muscle flaps are a good alternative to provide adequate coverage of tissue losses but with limited scarring. The authors report their 5 year clinical experience in the reconstruction of oral cavity and chest wall defects using the pectoralis major as muscle or musculocutaneous flap. The preliminary data of an angiographic study, confirming the segmentation of the pectoralis major muscle into two subunits, each provided with its own

Complete unilateral right-sided absence of the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles in an adult male cadaver of South Indian origin.

The unilateral complete absence of the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles in the absence of other anomalies is very rare. The complete absence of the pectoralis major and serratus anterior on the right side was observed during routine dissection of an elderly male cadaver of South Indian origin. Nodularity of the right fifth rib near the fifth costochondral junction was seen. The lateral pectoral and long thoracic nerves were present on the right side. Moderate right-sided disuse atrophy was noted in the pectoralis minor and the rotator cuff muscles due to a shoulder arthrodesis pe
