Object perception encodes mutually exclusive possibilities.

Human adults represent and reason about possibilities: multiple, mutually exclusive, nonactual ways the world could be. It is debated whether this is a late-developing, human-specific capacity and whether it requires natural language. We propose that instead of a unitary high-level capacity, multiple cognitive capacities might independently represent possibilities in different ways and with different properties. Our case study is object perception, a capacity shared with infants and nonhuman animals. Using methods that tap specifically into visual processes, across four experiments (N = 160), …

Taste Perception of Sugar-Free Isomaltooligosaccharides.

The influence of structural characteristics on taste perception of glucooligosaccharides (GlcOS) remains poorly understood. This study examined the role of α-1,6 glycosidic linkages in GlcOS taste perception by evaluating two sugar-free α-1,6 linkage-containing GlcOS: maltosyl-isomaltooligosaccharides (MIMO) and isomaltooligosaccharides (IMO). Both target samples were fractionated via graded ethanol precipitation to remove mono- and disaccharides. Structural characterization confirmed average degree of polymerizations of 6 and 5 for the MIMO and IMO preparations, respectively. NMR analyses sho…

Distinct Neural Plasticity Enhancing Visual Perception.

The developed human brain shows remarkable plasticity following perceptual learning, resulting in improved visual sensitivity. However, such improvements commonly require extensive stimuli exposure. Here we show that efficiently enhancing visual perception with minimal stimuli exposure recruits distinct neural mechanisms relative to standard repetition-based learning. Participants (n = 20, 12 women, 8 men) encoded a visual discrimination task, followed by brief memory reactivations of only five trials each performed on separate days, demonstrating improvements comparable with standard repetiti…

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Since motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame, which reference frame guides perception? A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) in the prior. Inve…

Consumer perception of sweeteners in yogurt.

Consumers are interested in products with reduced sugar, a trend which has been attributed to consumers associating high-sugar foods with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The objective of this study was to evaluate consumer perception of sugar reduction in yogurt-both conceptually and for liking of actual products. An online survey (n = 1,290) was conducted to evaluate consumer perception of sweeteners available in commercial yogurts. Participants who purchased yogurt at least once in the past 3 mo completed a series of exercises that involved demographics, agreement,…

More Positive Emotion, Less Stress Perception?

PURPOSE: Shanghai, a mega-city with a population of 25 million, was becoming the first city in mainland China to erupt in the Omicron pandemic. The pandemic and the quarantine measures of whole city static management brought out big challenges for the population. This study sought to examine the psychological impact of such quarantine measures. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in China between April 8 to April 14, 2022. The survey contained inventories of stress perception, emotion states, duration of quarantine, and demographic characteristics. A total of 1,051 participants in …

Self-motion perception without sensory motion.

Various studies have demonstrated a role for cognition on self-motion perception. Those studies all concerned modulations of the perception of a physical or visual motion stimulus. In our study, however, we investigated whether cognitive cues could elicit a percept of oscillatory self-motion in the absence of sensory motion. If so, we could use this percept to investigate if the resulting mismatch between estimated self-motion and a lack of corresponding sensory signals is motion sickening. To that end, we seated blindfolded participants on a swing that remained motionless during two condition…

Perception of Gamblers: A Systematic Review.

It is generally assumed that gamblers, and particularly people with gambling problems (PG), are affected by negative perception and stigmatisation. However, a systematic review of empirical studies investigating the perception of gamblers has not yet been carried out. This article therefore summarises empirical evidence on the perception of gamblers and provides directions for future research. A systematic literature review based on the relevant guidelines was carried out searching three databases. The databases Scopus, PubMed and BASE were used to cover social scientific knowledge, medical-ps…

[Neuroanatomy and Pathophysiology of Pain Perception].

Neuroanatomy and Pathophysiology of Pain Perception Abstract. Nociception, the possibility of our sensory nervous system to detect painful and therefore potentially harmful stimuli, is crucial for survival. In essence it serves as a "detect and protect" mechanism. For this reason, many features of this complex network, for example the nociceptors, are evolutionary highly preserved. To guarantee an adequate and fast response to prevent tissue damage, the information has to be processed in a fast and stable manner. To this account, the network is designed to be able to potentiate the information…

Scene Perception in the Human Brain.

Humans are remarkably adept at perceiving and understanding complex real-world scenes. Uncovering the neural basis of this ability is an imp … al models of information processing in scene regions, investigating how these regions support scene perception under ecologically realistic conditions, and understanding how they operate in the context of larger brain networks.

Biological Motion Perception in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The ability of healthy individuals to detect biological motion by using a small number of moving points is well established in animals and humans. Perception of human movements may depend on internal models that drive self-generated movements and influence motion discrimination (Reed CL et al. 1995 and 2007). As a person's motor repertoire deteriorates, the accuracy of these models may also decrease. OBJECTIVE: Determine if people with symptomatic Huntington's disease (HD) have difficulty perceiving movements. METHODS: In this study point-light displays were created with a Vicon …

Perception in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A large body of research demonstrated that individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from various neuropsychol … tion thresholds, whereas reduced perceptual functions were evident for aspects of visual and speech perception. Moreover, individuals with ADHD were found to experience discomfort to sensory stimuli at a lower level than typically developing individuals. Alterations of perceptual functions in individuals with ADHD were shown to be moderated by various factor …

Role of parafovea in blur perception.

The blur experienced by our visual system is not uniform across the visual field. Additionally, lens designs with variable power profile such as contact lenses used in presbyopia correction and to control myopia progression create variable blur from the fovea to the periphery. The perceptual changes associated with varying blur profile across the visual field are unclear. We therefore measured the perceived neutral focus with images of different angular subtense (from 4° to 20°) and found that the amount of blur, for which focus is perceived as neutral, increases when the stimulus was extended

Motion perception deficit in Down Syndrome.

It is a well established fact that Down Syndrome (DS) individuals have a tendency to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) (Lott, I.T., Head, E., 2005. Alzheimer disease and Down syndrome: factors in pathogenesis. Neurobiol. Aging 26, 383-389). They have therefore been proposed as a model to study the pre-dementia stage of Alzheimer's (Mann, D.M., 1988. The pathological association between Down syndrome and Alzheimer disease. Mech. Ageing Dev. 43, 99-136). One of the specific deficits exhibited by AD patients is optic flow motion perception (Tetewsky, S.J., Duffy, C.J., 1999. Visual loss and gettin…

Ebola risk perception in Germany, 2014.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreaks have occurred during the past 5 decades, but none has affected European countries like the 2014 epidemic in West Africa. We used an online questionnaire to investigate risk perceptions in Germany during this epidemic peak. Our questionnaire covered risk perceptions, knowledge about transmission routes, media use, reactions to the outbreak, attitudes toward measures to prevent the spread of EVD and vaccination against EVD, and willingness to volunteer for aid missions. Of 974 participants, 29% indicated that they worried about EVD, 4% correctly stated virus t…

On facial asymmetry and self-perception.

Self-perception has been an enduring human concern since ancient times and remains a significant component of the preoperative and postoperative consultation. Despite modern technological attempts to reproduce the first-hand experience, there is no perfect substitute for human, stereoscopic, three-dimensional vision in evaluating appearance. Nowadays, however, the primary tools available to a patient for examining his or her own appearance, particularly the face, are photographs and mirrors. Patients are often unaware of how cameras and photographs can distort and degrade image quality, leadin…

Personality and risk perception in transport.

Within research on individual variations in risk perception, personality has been suggested as one important factor. In the present study, personality traits (44 items from the Big Five inventory) were investigated in relation to risk perception in transport and transport behavioural adaptations. In a sample of 312 participants, we found that the personality trait 'emotional stability versus neuroticism' was negatively correlated with risk perception (operationalised as "thinking about the possibility") of an accident (-0.38) and an unpleasant incident, such as crime, violence, robbery (-0.25)…

Aberrant somatosensory perception in Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) patients have a disturbed experience of body size and shape. Previously it has been shown that these body representation disturbances extend to enlarged perception of tactile distances. Here we investigated whether misperception of tactile size could be related to inaccurate elementary somatosensory perception. Tactile size perception was measured with the Tactile Estimation Task (TET) (see Keizer et al., 2011). Elementary somatosensory perception was assessed with a pressure detection task and two point discrimination (TPD). Compared to controls (n=28), AN patients (n=25…

[Functional brain mapping of pain perception].

In this review, we summarize the contribution of functional imaging to the question of nociception in humans. In the beginning of the 90's, brain areas supposed to be involved in physiological pain processes were almost exclusively the primary somatosensory area (SI), thalamus, and anterior cingulate cortex. In spite of these a priori hypotheses, the first imaging studies revealed that the main brain areas and those providing the most consistent activations in pain conditions were the insular and the SII cortices, bilaterally. This has been confirmed with other techniques such as intracerebral

Saliency modulates global perception in simultanagnosia.

Patients with parieto-occipital brain damage may show simultanagnosia, a selective impairment in the simultaneous perception and integration of multiple objects (global perception) with normal recognition of individual objects. Recent findings in patients with simultanagnosia indicate improved global perception at smaller spatial distances between local elements of hierarchical organized complex visual arrays. Global perception thus does not appear to be an all-or-nothing phenomenon but can be modified by the spatial relationship between local elements. The present study aimed to define charac…
