Using auditory reaction time to measure loudness growth in rats.

Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory reaction time (RT) is a reliable surrogate of loudness perception in humans. Reaction time-intensity (RT-I) functions faithfully recapitulate equal loudness contours in humans while being easier to obtain than equal loudness judgments, especially in animals. In humans, loudness estimation not only depends on sound intensity, but on a variety of other acoustic factors. Stimulus duration and bandwidth are known to impact loudness perception. In addition, the presence of background noise mimics loudness recruitment; loudness growth is rapid near th

Speech-in-noise perception deficit in adults with dyslexia: effects of background type and listening configuration.

Developmental dyslexia is associated with impaired speech-in-noise perception. The goal of the present research was to further characterize this deficit in dyslexic adults. In order to specify the mechanisms and processing strategies used by adults with dyslexia during speech-in-noise perception, we explored the influence of background type, presenting single target-words against backgrounds made of cocktail party sounds, modulated speech-derived noise or stationary noise. We also evaluated the effect of three listening configurations differing in terms of the amount of spatial processing requ

Preserved use of spatial cues for sound segregation in a case of spatial deafness.

Auditory spatial cues contribute to sound localisation and to sound object segregation. We have investigated these capacities in a patient (NM) who complained having difficulties to localise sounds in everyday life after a right temporo-parieto-frontal ischemic lesion. Two groups of tasks were used, in which spatial dimension was simulated by interaural time differences (ITD): (i) active localisation of stationary or moving sound targets, and (ii) sound segregation on the basis of spatial cues. This latter included a spatial release from masking paradigm and two ITD diotic tasks. NM failed to

Report-modulated prefrontal activity and consistent posterior representations during conscious visual perception.

Understanding whether prefrontal cortex is necessary for conscious experience remains central to ongoing debates between global workspace and recurrent processing theories of consciousness. To dissociate neural processes underlying perceptual awareness from those related to report and access, we combined report and no-report visual masking paradigms with magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize the spatiotemporal and network dynamics of visual awareness. Across both report and no-report conditions, early and sustained responses emerged in occipital and temporal cortices, beginning at ∼60-7

Application of spectral subtraction method on enhancement of electrolarynx speech.

Although electrolarynx (EL) serves as an important method of phonation for the laryngectomees, the resulting speech is of poor intelligibility due to the presence of a steady background noise caused by the instrument, even worse in the case of additive noise. This paper investigates the problem of EL speech enhancement by taking into account the frequency-domain masking properties of the human auditory system. One approach is incorporating an auditory masking threshold (AMT) for parametric adaptation in a subtractive-type enhancement process. The other is the supplementary AMT (SAMT) algorithm

Extended perceptive field revealed in humans with binocular fusion disorders.

Binocular vision disorders or dysfunctions have considerable impact on daily visual activities such as reading. Heterophoria (phoria) is a latent eye misalignment (with a prevalence of up to 35%) that appears in conditions that disrupt binocular vision and it may affect the quality of binocular fusion. Our recent study, which used lateral masking (LM), suggests that subjects with binocular fusion disorders (horizontal phoria) exhibit an asymmetry and an abnormal pattern of both binocular and monocular lateral interactions, but only for the horizontal meridian (HM). The perceptive field (PF) is

Fragile recurrent processing in Aphantasia: Evidence from visual pattern completion.

Aphantasia - the absence of voluntary visual imagery - is typically framed as an imagery deficit, but the recurrent circuits implicated in imagery also support perception. We asked whether aphantasic individuals are more vulnerable to backward masking during visual pattern completion, a task that depends on recurrent feedback to fill in missing information from partially occluded objects. 31 self-identified aphantasic participants and 41 controls categorized briefly presented, partially occluded objects (stimulus-onset asynchronies 25-150 ms) followed by either a noise mask or a blank screen.

Border-ownership reversals determine the strength of metacontrast masking.

Visual objects can be rendered invisible if their borders are assigned to other objects, showing that border-ownership (BO) is critical for perception. Objects can also be rendered invisible by using masking to limit the amount of time the brain has to process the object. An example of this is metacontrast masking (MM). MM occurs when an object is briefly presented and is followed by the presentation of a mask with closely adjacent contours. The mask can render the target object invisible, even though the target object is processed in high level brain areas. We propose that a critical factor t

The effects of temporal cues, point-light displays, and faces on speech identification and listening effort.

Among the most robust findings in speech research is that the presence of a talking face improves the intelligibility of spoken language. Talking faces supplement the auditory signal by providing fine phonetic cues based on the placement of the articulators, as well as temporal cues to when speech is occurring. In this study, we varied the amount of information contained in the visual signal, ranging from temporal information alone to a natural talking face. Participants were presented with spoken sentences in energetic or informational masking in four different visual conditions: audio-only,

The effects of broadband elicitor duration on a psychoacoustic measure of cochlear gain reduction.

Physiological and psychoacoustic studies of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) in humans have often relied on long duration elicitors (>100 ms). This is largely due to previous research using otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) that found multiple MOCR time constants, including time constants in the 100s of milliseconds, when elicited by broadband noise. However, the effect of the duration of a broadband noise elicitor on similar psychoacoustic tasks is currently unknown. The current study measured the effects of ipsilateral broadband noise elicitor duration on psychoacoustic gain reduction estim

[Hearing tests in practice : Audiometric masking in pure-tone and speech audiometry].

Correct execution of hearing tests is essential for audiologic diagnostics and selection of treatment by the ENT physician. Especially in the case of pure-tone and speech audiometry, incorrectly performed audiometric masking can lead to false measurement results. Often, hearing that is too good is feigned by overhearing in the contralateral ear. Herein, a masking strategy is described by which errors in the execution of masking can be recognized and corrected. The aim of this paper is to identify and prevent the most common errors made during the masking process in pure-tone and speech audiome

Amplitude-modulation forward masking for listeners with and without hearing loss.

Amplitude-modulation (AM) forward masking was measured for listeners with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss at 4000 and 1000 Hz, using continuous and noncontinuous masker and signal carriers, respectively. A low-fluctuation noise (LFN) carrier was used for the "continuous carrier" conditions. An unmodulated low-fluctuation noise (U-LFN), an unmodulated Gaussian noise (U-GN), and an amplitude-modulation low-fluctuation noise (AM-LFN) were maskers for the "noncontinuous carrier" conditions. As predicted, U-GN yielded more masking than U-LFN and similar masking to AM-LFN, suggesting t

The electrophysiological masking level difference: effects of age and mediation of hearing and cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the conceptual framework that age effects on the electrophysiological binaural masking level difference (MLD) are partially mediated by age-related hearing loss and/or global cognitive function via mediation analysis. DESIGN: Participants underwent a series of audiometric tests. The MLD was measured via cortical auditory evoked potentials using a speech stimulus (/ɑ/) in speech-weighted background noise. We used mediation analyses to determine the total effect, natural direct effects, and natural indirect effects, which are displayed as regression coefficients ([95% CI]; p

The role of the medial olivocochlear reflex in psychophysical masking and intensity resolution in humans: a review.

This review addresses the putative role of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex in psychophysical masking and intensity resolution in humans. A framework for interpreting psychophysical results in terms of the expected influence of the MOC reflex is introduced. This framework is used to review the effects of a precursor or contralateral acoustic stimulation on 1) simultaneous masking of brief tones, 2) behavioral estimates of cochlear gain and frequency resolution in forward masking, 3) the buildup and decay of forward masking, and 4) measures of intensity resolution. Support, or lack thereof

Peripheral and central contribution to the difficulty of speech in noise perception in dyslexic children.

Noise typically induces both peripheral and central masking of an auditory target. Whereas the idea that a deficit of speech in noise perception is inherent to dyslexia is still debated, most studies have actually focused on the peripheral contribution to the dyslexics' difficulties of perceiving speech in noise. Here, we investigated the respective contribution of both peripheral and central noise in three groups of children: dyslexic, chronological age matched controls (CA), and reading-level matched controls (RL). In all noise conditions, dyslexics displayed significantly lower performance

Development and current status of the "Cambridge" loudness models.

This article reviews the evolution of a series of models of loudness developed in Cambridge, UK. The first model, applicable to stationary sounds, was based on modifications of the model developed by Zwicker, including the introduction of a filter to allow for the effects of transfer of sound through the outer and middle ear prior to the calculation of an excitation pattern, and changes in the way that the excitation pattern was calculated. Later, modifications were introduced to the assumed middle-ear transfer function and to the way that specific loudness was calculated from excitation level

Masking of sounds by a background noise--cochlear mechanical correlates.

In the search for cochlear correlates of auditory masking by noise stimuli, we recorded basilar membrane (BM) vibrations evoked by either tone or click signals in the presence of varying levels of background noise. The BM vibrations were recorded from basal regions in healthy cochleae of anaesthetized chinchilla and gerbil. Non-linear interactions that could underpin various aspects of psychophysical masking data, including both compression and suppression at the BM level, were observed. The suppression effects, whereby the amplitude of the responses to each stimulus component could be reduced

Holistic crowding: selective interference between configural representations of faces in crowded scenes.

It is difficult to recognize an object that falls in the peripheral visual field; it is even more difficult when there are other objects surrounding it. This effect, known as crowding, could be due to interactions between the low-level parts or features of the surrounding objects. Here, we investigated whether crowding can also occur selectively between higher level object representations. Many studies have demonstrated that upright faces, unlike most other objects, are coded holistically. Therefore, in addition to featural crowding within a face (M. Martelli, N. J. Majaj, & D. G. Pelli, 2005)

Morphological processing in adult dyslexia.

This study employed the masked-priming paradigm [Forster and Davis (J Exp Psychol bearn Mem Cogn 10: 680-698, 1984).], along with traditional methods of evaluation of morphological awareness and phonological processing, to obtain a finer-grained picture of the relationship between morphological abilities and reading in adult dyslexic readers. Participants were 21 dyslexic and 21 normally reading native Hebrew-speaking male college students. The results with masked priming demonstrated almost normal status of morphological knowledge in adult dyslexic readers with the presence of characteristic

A measure for predicting audibility discrimination thresholds for spectral envelope distortions in vowel sounds.

Both in speech synthesis and in sound coding it is often beneficial to have a measure that predicts whether, and to what extent, two sounds are different. This paper addresses the problem of estimating the perceptual effects of small modifications to the spectral envelope of a harmonic sound. A recently proposed auditory model is investigated that transforms the physical spectrum into a pattern of specific loudness as a function of critical band rate. A distance measure based on the concept of partial loudness is presented, which treats detectability in terms of a partial loudness threshold. T
