Malignant mesothelioma induced by asbestos and zeolite in the mouse peritoneal cavity.

The carcinogenicity of asbestos (amosite and chrysotile) and zeolite (fibrous erionite, mordenite, and synthetic zeolite 4A) were studied in the peritoneum of 586 BALB/C male mice after a single intraperitoneal or intraabdominal wall injection. As controls, 182 mice treated with and without saline solution were used. Both asbestos types and fibrous erionite frequently produced malignant peritoneal tumors after long latency; tumors developed in 93 of 394 animals (23.6%) treated with asbestos or fibrous erionite 7 months or more after administration. All of the induced peritoneal tumors were int

Uptake and transfer of particulate matter from the peritoneal cavity of the rat.

1. Colloidal mercuric sulfide or thorium dioxide injected intraperitoneally passes into the cytoplasm of the mesothelium of the mesentery and of the diaphragm as early as 15 to 30 minutes after the injection. 2. Between 15 minutes and 12(1/2) hours the number of particles within the mesothelial cells increases as the time between injection and termination of the experiment is lengthened. 3. The particulate matter is usually localized in the cytoplasm within clear vacuoles or bodies having a relatively dense matrix. 4. A greater quantity of the absorbed material is commonly observed within the

3,4-dideoxyglucosone-3-ene in peritoneal dialysis fluids infused into the peritoneal cavity cannot be found in plasma.

OBJECTIVE: Glucose degradation products (GDPs) are important for the outcome of peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment. The most cytotoxic GDP f … s during dialysis. The 3-DG concentration in plasma peaked shortly after infusion of fluid into the peritoneal cavity. The 3,4-DGE concentration during experimental incubation in plasma declined rapidly; the 3-DG concentration declined only 10% as rapidly (or less). CONCLUSION: During dialysis, 3,4-DGE could not be detected in plasma of either PD patients or rats, …

The pharmacological effect of sodium phosphate after absorption from the peritoneal cavity.

Hyperosmolar solutions are frequently used in clinical practice for enemas. In a review of the literature we found 43 published cases of severe complications connected with the use of hyperosmolar enemas. The absorption of sodium phosphate led to a raise of the temperature up to 41.1 degrees C, massive acidosis and electrolyte disturbances with hypocalcemia and hypernatremia. The clinical picture was dominated in most of the cases by somnolence or coma. In our experiment the absorption of sodium phosphate from the peritoneal cavity of rats led to similar clinical symptoms and--depending on the…

[Acute abdomen secondary to pyonephrosis. Perinephritic abscess with fistula to peritoneal cavity].

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of acute abdomen arising from an underlying urological condition. METHODS/RESULTS: Herein we describe a patient with acute abdomen arising from a pyonephrotic kidney with fistulization to the peritoneal cavity. The clinical manifestations disappeared following nephrectomy by the anterior approach and drainage of the intraperitoneal cavity. CONCLUSION: Although infrequent, it should be taken into account that peritoneal abscess and/or pyonephrosis can cause acute abdomen when they fistulize to the peritoneal cavity.

Extra-tissular Schistosoma mansoni egg granulomata in the peritoneal cavity of mice.

The presence of Schistosoma mansoni eggs surrounded by inflammatory cells were detected within the peritoneal cavity of experimentally infected mice. The histological and ultrastructural analysis revealed the predominantly macrophagic composition of these structures. The presence of epithelioid cells, macrophages in different stages of activation and the architectural pattern of the cells, characterize these structures as extra-tissular true granulomas. Granulomas much similar to those observed in the peritoneal cavity of infected mice were also detected after the intraperitoneal injection of …

VSIG4-Expressing Macrophages Contribute to Antiparasitic and Antimetastatic Responses in the Peritoneal Cavity.

Large peritoneal macrophages (LPMs) play a role as gatekeepers of peritoneal homeostasis by providing a first line of defense against pathog … of parasitemia in a Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection model and in reducing CRC outgrowth in the peritoneal cavity, a prime metastatic site in CRC patients. Altogether, our data uncover a protective role for VSIG4+ LPMs in infectious and oncological diseases in the peritoneal cavity.

Safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with a cerebrospinal fluid shunt in the peritoneal cavity.

INTRODUCTION: The management of patients with a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt located in the peritoneal cavity undergoing laparoscopic surgery is an issue that has not yet been settled. These patients are at risk of increased intracranial pressure caused by peritoneal insufflation, shunt dysfunction, and shunt infection/retrograde meningitis. This study aimed to determine the need for perioperative shunt intervention in CSF shunt patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: We reviewed and analyzed five shunt patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy in our instituti…

[APPROACH TO ESTABLISHMENT OF INDICATIONS FOR PROGRAMMED SANATION OF ABDOMINAL CAVITY IN DIFFUSE PERITONITIS].

The results of treatment of 33 patients, suffering diffuse peritonitis, with postoperatively applied tactics of the programmed surgical sanation of abdominal cavity were analyzed. Indications for relaparotomy were established, based on the estimation scale for the enteral insufficiency severity. The patients death and the complications causes were analyzed, depending on terms and rates of relaparotomy conduction.

Response to pathological processes in the peritoneal cavity--sepsis, tumours, adhesions, and ascites.

The peritoneum is one of the commonest sites for pathological processes in pediatric surgery. Its response to pathological processes is characterized by an inflammatory reaction with specific pathways depending on the type of injury or peritoneal process involved. This review discusses the current understanding of peritoneal inflammation, adhesion formation, intra-abdominal sepsis, peritoneal metastasis, and ascites and briefly reviews new therapeutic strategies to treat or prevent these pathological entities. Recent studies have improved the understanding of peritoneal responses, resulting in

Adult granulosa cell tumor presenting as metastases to the pleural and peritoneal cavity.

Ovarian tumors of sex-cord stromal derivation rarely exfoliate malignant cells in serous effusions. Adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) often presents as a stage I disease and association with ascites is about 10%. AGCT is rarely known to exfoliate tumor cells in the ascitic fluid. Exfoliation of malignant cells in the pleural fluid is rarer and has not been described previously in literature to the best of our knowledge. We report a case of AGCT presenting as stage IV disease with exfoliation of malignant cells in the pleural and ascitic fluid with exudative effusions. We wish to emphasize on c

Rupture of liver hydatid cysts into the peritoneal cavity. A challenge in endemic regions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical presentation and early and long-term outcomes of patients treated surgically for intraperitoneal ruptured liver hydatid cysts. METHODS: The medical records of 21 patients with rupture of hydatid cysts were evaluated retrospectively between January 2000 and April 2009 at Izmir Ataturk Training and Research Hospital, Izmir, Turkey, as were the records of 368 patients with hydatid cysts. Age, gender, symptoms, laboratory findings, diagnostic procedures, surgical treatment modalities, in-hospital stay, morbidity, mortality, and recurrence were evaluated. RESUL
