One hundred twenty-three patients with lower chest and abdominal stab wounds were evaluated. If chest wounds were located between the two anterior axillary lines and abdominal examination was negative, peritoneal lavage was performed. Peritoneal lavage was given during four days to rats subjected either to transection and re-anastomosis or perforation of the descending part of the colon or caecum. Control rats were treated in the smae way but did not receive peritoneal lavage. We report a case of fatal sodium poisoning due to the unintentional use of 20% hypertonic saline serum during peritoneal lavage after intestinal resection. The patient presented with unconsciousness, metabolic acidosis, and plasma sodium concentration of 193 mE/l. PURPOSE: Peritoneal dissemination is the most common cause of death associated with gastric cancer. In this study, we report the significance of molecular diagnosis of peritoneal dissemination by means of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR) assay using preoperative peritoneal wash fluid.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Preoperative peritoneal lavage by paracentesis was performed on 152 patients with gastric cancer. The peritoneal lavaged fluid was subjected to RT-PCR analysis with primers specific for MMP-7 and conventional cytological Papanicolaou examination.
