The fate and behavior of petroleum biomarkers in diluted bitumen and conventional crude oil exposed to natural sunlight in simulated seawater.

Given that the physicochemical properties of diluted bitumen (dilbit) can differ from those of conventional crude oil, understanding the fate and behavior of this petroleum product in the environment becomes vital. This study involves the analysis of the photolytic behavior of some representative petroleum biomarkers, bicyclic sesquiterpanes (BSs), admantanes (ADs), diamantanes (DAs), and mono- and triaromatic steranes (MASs and TASs), by exposing Cold Lake Blend (CLB) and Alberta Sweet Mixed Blend (MSW) to winter and summer insolation after being spilled onto artificial brines. Aromatic stera

Exposure to water-accommodated fractions of two different crude oils alters morphology, cardiac function and swim bladder development in early-life stages of zebrafish.

The present study investigated the developmental toxicity of water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of Oman crude oil (OCO) and Merey crude oil (MCO) on zebrafish (Danio rerio) in early-life stages (ELS). Based on total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), LC50 values manifested that OCO WAF was 1.2-fold more lethal to zebrafish embryos than MCO WAF. As for hatching rate, EC50 value for OCO WAF was 5.7-fold lower than that for MCO WAF. To evaluate the sublethal morphological effects, semi-quantitative extended general morphological score (GMS) and general teratogenic score (GTS) systems were adopted. Th

Best available techniques (BATs) for oil spill response in the Mediterranean Sea: calm sea and presence of economic activities.

An oil spill is the accidental or intentional discharge of petroleum products into the environment due to human activities. Although oil spills are actually just a little percent of the total world oil pollution problem, they represent the most visible form of it. The impact on the ecosystems can be severe as well as the impact on economic activities. Oil spill cleanup is a very difficult and expensive activity, and many techniques are available for it. In previous works, a methodology based on different kinds of criteria in order to come to the most satisfactory technique was proposed and the

Catalytic engineering of transition metal (TM: Ni, Pd, Pt)-coordinated Ge-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ge@g-c3n4) nanostructures for petroleum hydrocarbon separation: An outlook from theoretical calculations.

The extraction, processing, and utilization of petroleum often results in the release of diverse hydrocarbon pollutants into the environment, leading to severe ecological and health implications. Herein, the adsorption and separation of ethane (EAN), ethene (EEN), ethyne (EYN), and benzene (BZN) fractions of paraffin, olefin, acetylene, and aromatic petroleum hydrocarbons were investigated via the catalytically engineered nickel group transition metals; nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), and platinum (Pt). These transition metals were coordinated on Germanium-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ge@g-C3N

Application of herbaceous plant mixtures for remediation of TPH-contaminated soil.

Soil pollution with petroleum products is an urgent public health and environmental problem. Therefore, innovative solutions for cleaning soils contaminated with petroleum products are needed. One such solution is rhizodegradation, which is recognized as a sustainable and effective method of in situ soil remediation. Much of the previous research was done with monocultures, therefore the effects of different combinations of plants on the removal of petroleum products remain ambiguous. These studies evaluated three different herbaceous plant mixtures for the removal of total petroleum hydrocarb

Potential hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms in Baltic Sea sediments.

The spill of crude oil and other petroleum derivatives comprises the majority of ocean pollution and leads to acute and chronic damage to exposed marine organisms and coastal ecosystems. Some bacteria and fungi are known to biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons in terrestrial and aquatic environments. In this study, sediment samples from the Baltic Sea, collected near an oil terminal, and from the Curonian Lagoon strait, an area under high anthropogenic and shipping pressure, were explored as a source of microorganisms with potential for hydrocarbon degradation. Next-generation sequencing showed t

Diversity and metagenome analysis of a hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial consortium from asphalt lakes located in Wietze, Germany.

The pollution of terrestrial and aquatic environments by petroleum contaminants, especially diesel fuel, is a persistent environmental threat requiring cost-effective and environmentally sensitive remediation approaches. Bioremediation is one such approach, but is dependent on the availability of microorganisms with the necessary metabolic abilities and environmental adaptability. The aim of this study was to examine the microbial community in a petroleum contaminated site, and isolate organisms potentially able to degrade hydrocarbons. Through successive enrichment of soil microorganisms from

Co-migration behavior of toluene coupled with trichloroethylene and the response of the pristine groundwater ecosystems - A mesoscale indoor experiment.

Experimental scale and sampling precision are the main factors limiting the accuracy of migration and transformation assessments of complex petroleum-based contaminants in groundwater. In this study, a mesoscale indoor aquifer device with high environmental fidelity and monitoring accuracy was constructed, in which dissolved toluene and trichloroethylene were used as typical contaminants in a 1.5-year contaminant migration experiment. The process was divided into five stages, namely, pristine, injection, accumulation, decrease, and recovery, and characteristics such as differences in contamina

Identification of anthropogenic influences on water quality of rivers in Taihu watershed.

Surface water bodies are progressively subjected to stress as a result of anthropogenic activities. This study assessed and examined the impact of human activities on spatial variation in the water quality of 19 rivers in the Taihu watershed. Concentrations of physicochemical parameters of surface water quality were determined at the mouth of each river during the period of 2000-2004. Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to identify characteristics of the water quality in the studied rivers. The results showed that rivers strongly influenced by household wastewater have the highest

Assessment of benzene and total petroleum hydrocarbons as risk drivers for petroleum vapor intrusion from LNAPL sources to indoor air.

Petroleum vapor intrusion (PVI) is commonly evaluated by assuming benzene as the primary risk driver. This approach, however, does not reflect the complexity of LNAPL mixtures, whose constituents exhibit different physicochemical properties and biodegradation behavior during subsurface transport. To address this limitation, some studies have proposed TPH-to-benzene ratios to identify conditions under which non-benzene hydrocarbons may dominate PVI risk. These ratios, however, were derived assuming a constant mixture composition during subsurface transport. In this study, a two-dimensional nume

Transcriptomic response and hydrocarbon accumulation in the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) exposed to crude oil.

The adverse effect of crude oil on marine invertebrates is well known. To have a better understanding of its effects on marine invertebrates, Crassostrea virginica was exposed to different concentrations (50, 100 and 200 μg/L) of a mixture of super-light and light crude oil for two weeks, evaluating the transcriptomic response of the digestive gland using RNA-Seq and their accumulation in soft tissues. A total of 33,469,374 reads were assembled, which resulted in 61,356 genome assemblies ('Genes'). Trinotate was used for transcript annotation. At the end of this process, 86,409 transcripts wer

Contamination by oil crude extraction - Refinement and their effects on human health.

The harmful effects of oil on various species of flora and fauna have been studied extensively; however, few studies have studied the effects of oil exposure on human health. The objective of this research was to collect information on the acute health effects and serious psychological symptoms of the possible consequences of such exposure to crude oil. Some studies focused on the composition of different chemicals used in the extraction process, and wastes generated proved to be highly harmful to human health. Thus, studies have shown that individuals who live near oil fields or wells - or wh

Remediation of Simulated Heavy Crude Oil Spills in a Boreal Lake Using Enhanced Monitored Natural Recovery (eMNR): Impacts on Phytoplankton and Biofilm Communities.

A lake littoral enclosure study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a minimally invasive secondary remediation method (enhanced Monitored Natural Recovery eMNR) on phytoplankton and biofilm communities following a model heavy crude oil spill. Enclosures (n = 3; ~ 27,000 L) received 1.5 kg of weathered conventional heavy crude and underwent primary remediation by freshwater shoreline flushing and oil recovery using oleophilic sorbent pads, followed by nutrient addition to stimulate microbial degradation (eMNR). Reference enclosures (n = 3) received shoreline flushing only. Phytoplankton ch

Resuscitation-promoting factors: Novel strategies for the bioremediation of crude oil-contaminated soils.

Soil contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons is a major environmental concern. The bioremediation of these soils can be restricted because of the entry of potential microbial degraders into the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state under unfavorable environmental conditions. Resuscitation agents can stimulate the resuscitation and growth of the bacterial population, improving their degradation capabilities. This study evaluated the efficacy of resuscitation-promoting factor (Rpf) in enhancing the biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in crude oil-contaminated soils, with a fo

Do oil droplets and chemical dispersants contribute to uptake of oil compounds and toxicity of crude oil dispersions in cold-water copepods?

Accidental crude oil spills to the marine environment cause dispersion of oil into the water column through the actions of breaking waves, a process that can be facilitated using chemical dispersants. Oil dispersions contain dispersed micron-sized oil droplets and dissolved oil components, and the toxicity of oil dispersions has been assumed to be associated primarily with the latter. However, most hydrophobic, bioaccumulative and toxic crude oil components are retained within the droplets which may interact with marine filter-feeders. We here summarize the findings of 15 years of research usi

Anomalously High Recruitment of the 2010 Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) Year Class: Evidence of Indirect Effects from the Deepwater Horizon Blowout in the Gulf of Mexico.

Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) exhibited unprecedented juvenile recruitment in 2010 during the year of the Deepwater Horizon well blowout, exceeding the prior 39-year mean by more than four standard deviations near the Mississippi River. Abundance of that cohort remained exceptionally high for two subsequent years as recruits moved into older age classes. Such changes in this dominant forage fish population can be most parsimoniously explained as consequences of release from predation. Contact with crude oil induced high mortality of piscivorous seabirds, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops trun

Cardiac function and survival are affected by crude oil in larval red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus.

Following exposure to weathered and non-weathered oil, lethal and sub-lethal impacts on red drum larvae were assessed using survival, morphological, and cardiotoxicity assays. The LC50 for red drum ranged from 14.6 (10.3-20.9) to 21.3 (19.1-23.8) μgl-1 ΣPAH with no effect of exposure timing during the pre-hatch window or oil weathering. Similarly, morphological deformities showed dose responses in the low ppb range. Cardiac output showed similar sensitivity resulting in a major 70% reduction after exposure to 2.6μgl-1 ΣPAH. This cardiac failure was driven by reduced stroke volume rather than b

A practical review on photooxidation of crude oil: laboratory lamp setup and factors affecting it.

After an oil spill, crude oil in the marine environment is affected by a variety of processes collectively called weathering. Photooxidation induced by ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun is one of the most significant processes of long-term weathering that changes the chemical nature of oil. Experimental studies on photooxidation in the natural environment are generally not practicable due to the variability of factors that are more readily controlled in a laboratory. The emission spectra and irradiance of artificial lamps are critical factors for simulating sunlight, and the process of accel
