Sensitivity in phononic crystal sensors via super asymmetric coupled-cavity engineering.

This work presents a one-dimensional super-asymmetric coupled-cavity phononic crystal sensor for concentration-dependent liquid analysis using an ethanol-water mixture as the sensing medium. The proposed structure consists of periodic acoustic mirrors surrounding an asymmetric coupled-defect region expressed as Air∣(A/B)7∣CL∣D∣CR∣(B/A)7 ∣Air, where the asymmetry is introduced through unequal coupling cavity thicknesses. The structural asymmetry modifies the acoustic confinement behavior inside the liquid defect cavity and enhances the resonance sensitivity to concentration variations. The tran

A novel high-sensitivity triaxial accelerometer based on 3-D phononic crystals.

High-sensitivity triaxial acceleration sensing is widely applied from consumer electronics to inertial navigation. However, Conventional triaxial accelerometers are mainly rely on assembling multiple single-axis transducers, which increases device size and complexity. The acceleration-sensing mechanism of phononic crystals (PnCs) has demonstrated significant potential for high-sensitivity detection, owing to the high-quality factor of their resonant cavities. In this paper, based on the theory of 2-D PnCs single-axis acceleration sensing, we propose a novel triaxial accelerometer based on 3-D

Electron-phonon interaction and superconductivity in the silicon-boron-carbon monolayers with high stability.

Recently, considerable attention has been given to the exploration of superconductivity in low-dimensional materials. By employing unbiased structure search and first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the structural and electronic properties of the predicted two-dimensional (2D) compounds SiBC4, SiBC6, and SiB4C in the monolayer limit. These structures demonstrate high thermal stability at 1,500 K and meet the criteria for mechanical and dynamic stability. Most importantly, they are identified as intrinsic superconductors with superconducting transition temperatures (T c )

The effect of non-stoichiometry in Sb2Se3 films on their phonon and electronic properties in the infrared range.

Due to the noticeable part of Sb2Se3 films in solar cell technology, the deposition of Sb2Se3 films with the desirable content and improved crystalline perfection is of crucial importance. Therefore, extensive experimental and theoretical studies of the electronic and phonon properties of these materials are of interest. In this work, the stoichiometry and morphology of antimony selenide films are correlated to their optical properties in the far-infrared regime and compared to theoretically calculated properties for an ideal crystal. For this study, the reflectance of a series of 1.4-1.7 μm t

Coexistence of topological node surface and Dirac fermions in phonon-mediated superconductor YB2C2.

The interaction between nontrivial topology and superconductivity in condensed matter physics has attracted tremendous research interest as it could give rise to exotic phenomena. Herein, based on first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic structures, mechanical properties, topological properties, dynamic stability, electron-phonon coupling (EPC), and superconducting properties of the synthesized real material YB2C2. It is a tetragonal structure with P4/mbm symmetry and exhibits excellent stability. The calculated electronic band structures reveal that a zero-dimension (0D) D

Unidirectional hyperbolic whispering-gallery phonon-polariton excitation in boron nitride nanotubes.

In two-dimensional (2D) hyperbolic materials, energy is directed into their deep subwavelength polaritonic modes through four narrow beams. Hyperbolic whispering-gallery mode nanocavity-confined phonon polaritons (PhPs) display a strongly enhanced light-matter interaction in the infrared regime. Particularly, the unidirectional phonon-polarization excitation in nanocavities has a potential application value in an on-chip integrated optical circuit design, efficient optical sensors, and enhanced spectral technology. Here, we explore the hyperbolic whispering-gallery mode PhPs on the cross secti

Superior Phonon-Limited Exciton Mobility in Lead-Free Two-Dimensional Perovskites.

Tin-based two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are emerging as lead-free alternatives in halide perovskite materials, yet their exciton dynamics and transport remain less understood due to defect scattering. Addressing this, we employed temperature-dependent transient photoluminescence (PL) microscopy to investigate intrinsic exciton transport in three structurally analogous Sn- and Pb-based 2D perovskites. Employing conjugated ligands, we synthesized high-quality crystals with enhanced phase stability at various temperatures. Our results revealed phonon-limited exciton transport in Sn perovskites

A combined first principles study of the structural, magnetic, and phonon properties of monolayer CrI3.

The first magnetic 2D material discovered, monolayer (ML) CrI3, is particularly fascinating due to its ground state ferromagnetism. However, because ML materials are difficult to probe experimentally, much remains unresolved about ML CrI3's structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Here, we leverage Density Functional Theory (DFT) and high-accuracy Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations to predict lattice parameters, magnetic moments, and spin-phonon and spin-lattice coupling of ML CrI3. We exploit a recently developed surrogate Hessian DMC line search technique to determine CrI3's ML

The impact of electron-phonon coupling on the figure of merit of Nb2SiTe4 and Nb2GeTe4 ternary monolayers.

We have comprehensively demonstrated the thermal transport properties of Nb2SiTe4 and Nb2GeTe4 ternary monolayers by employing first-principles calculations and the semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory, including the electron-phonon coupling. The appealing features uncovered here for the monolayers are their colossal Seebeck coefficient and power factor at a higher carrier concentration. For example, the room temperature Seebeck coefficient lasts as high as 200 μV K-1 even at an increased hole (electron) concentration 6.32 × 1020 cm-3 (5.17 × 1019 cm-3) and 1.47 × 1020 cm-3 (5.18 × 1019 c

Strain-induced modulations of electronic structure and electron-phonon coupling in dense H3S.

A ∼200 K superconducting phase in dense hydrogen sulfide is an important milestone for the development of novel superconductors with high critical temperature. Here, we systematically studied the effect of uniaxial strain on the electronic and superconducting properties in dense H3S using density functional calculations. Our theoretical results show that inducing strain is an effective tool to control the electronic Fermi surface topology, logarithmic average frequency, and electron-phonon coupling parameter of dense H3S. Thus, uniaxial strain induces sensitive and considerable changes in supe

Electron-phonon interaction and thermal boundary resistance at the interfaces of Ge2Sb2Te5 with metals and dielectrics.

The Ge2Sb2Te5 compound is of interest for applications in phase change non-volatile memories. First-principles calculations of phonon dispersion relations and electron-phonon coupling constant provide an estimate of the electron-phonon contribution to the thermal boundary resistance at the interfaces of Ge2Sb2Te5 with dielectrics (silica) and metal electrodes (Al and TiN). The diffuse mismatch model including full phononic dispersion has been used to compute the phononic contribution to the thermal boundary resistance. The calculated value of the electron-phonon contribution to the TBR at 300

Catalytic Combustion of Extremely Low Concentrations of Methane by Pt/CeO2 {111} Nanocrystals Driven by the Synergy of Photons and Phonons.

Anthropogenic methane emissions from landfill sites and coal mines with low local concentrations (<5000 ppm) are a critical factor in climat … oscopies confirm that CeO2 {111} efficiently harvests photons and promotes charge separation, while phonons promote the detrapping process and improve the initial charge separation, further enhancing the active charge populations. Meanwhile, Pt works as an efficient electron acceptor, enabling photohole oxidation of methane at the picosecond time scale an …

Low-Frequency Vibrational Density of States of Nanophase-Separated Poly(n‑alkyl methacrylate)s: Confined Phonons and Relationship to Specific Heat.

This study investigates the low-frequency vibrational density of states of nanophase-separated poly-(n-alkyl methacrylate)-s (PnMAs) and its relationship to specific heat. This system undergoes a nanophase separation for n > 1 in alkyl side chain-rich domains and a backbone-rich matrix. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the low-frequency vibrational density of states (Boson peak, BP) of PnMAs with varying alkyl side chain lengths (methyl, butyl, hexyl, and octyl) is measured. The results reveal that the BP shifts to higher frequencies with increasing side chain length reaching a maximum. Thi

Weak electron-phonon coupling is insufficient to generate significant CISS in two-terminal transport.

A central open question in chiral-induced spin selectivity is whether weak electron-phonon coupling in a helical molecular junction can generate a sizable spin polarization in two-terminal transport without invoking additional strong symmetry-breaking ingredients. We address this question by implementing a self-consistent nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) calculation for a helical tight-binding model with spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interactions. The electron-phonon self-energies are evaluated self-consistently, and the transport signal is extracted using the standard magnetiz

Generalized Surface Conductivity Model for Anisotropic Phonon Polaritons in van der Waals Slabs.

Recent advancements of anisotropic phonon polaritons (PhPs) in low-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials enable efficient control of long-wavelength light at nanoscale with ultrahigh confinement and low loss. The theoretical analysis based on the two-dimensional (2D) surface conductivity model has been widely exploited, for its simplicity, to understand fundamental phenomena at the surface of vdW slabs, which, however, neglects the intrinsic higher-order waveguide modes excited therein. Here, we report a generalized surface conductivity model which can allow us to include all waveguide mod

Inhomogeneous Strain-Modulated Phonon Scattering Sustains Hot Electrons for Enhanced Enzymatic Therapy.

Enzymatic therapy holds potential as a tumor therapeutic approach, yet enhancing the catalytic activity of nanozymes remains a challenge in tumor cells. Here, we designed a strain-engineered nanozymes (PWO) based on platinum (Pt) nanodots epitaxially grown on tungsten oxide (WOx) nanoribbons, which introduced inhomogeneous lattice strain. The phonon spectrums reveal the different influences on acoustic and optical branches caused by inhomogeneous strain. Enhanced acoustic phonon scattering promotes elastic electron-phonon interactions, enabling hot electrons to retain energy as confined lattic

Photon-Phonon-Electron Synergy Enables Efficient Photothermoelectric Conversion for Intelligent Fire Warning.

Photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors offer broad-spectrum response and high sensitivity, but their performance and applications are fundamentally limited by the difficulty of simultaneously controlling photon absorption, phonon propagation, and charge-carrier dynamics. Here, we report silver selenide/silver secondary phases (Ag2Se/Ag-SPs) nanocomposite films comprising vertically aligned Ag-SPs within a (00l)-oriented Ag2Se matrix, fabricated via oriented growth and confined phase separation. This customized architecture suppresses lattice thermal transport through interfacial phonon scattering

One-Dimensional Organic Lead Bromide Elastic Crystals with Strong Electron-Phonon Coupling.

Two novel one-dimensional (1D) lead halide elastic crystals, [Pb2Br4(DMA)2]n (1) (DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) and [Pb2Br4(DMF)2]n (2) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were reported. Both compounds 1 and 2 feature a neutral 1D bimetallic axis chain structure. The bending strain of compound 1 is 1.36%, higher than those of all reported 1D single-metal axis chain coordinate polymers, indicating the superior elastic properties of the 1D bimetallic axis chain polymers. Compound 1 exhibits strong red-to-near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission below 200 K, with an emission peak at 700 nm and a full

The Spin-Phonon Relaxation Mechanism of Single-Molecule Magnets in the Presence of Strong Exchange Coupling.

Magnetic relaxation in coordination compounds is largely dominated by the interaction of the spin with phonons. Although a comprehensive understanding of spin-phonon relaxation has been achieved for mononuclear complexes, only a qualitative picture is available for polynuclear compounds. Large zero-field splitting and exchange coupling values have been empirically found to strongly suppress spin relaxation and have been used as the main guideline for designing molecular compounds with long spin lifetime, also known as single-molecule magnets, but no microscopic rationale for these observations…

Emission of coherent THz magnons in an antiferromagnetic insulator triggered by ultrafast spin-phonon interactions.

Antiferromagnetic materials have been proposed as new types of narrowband THz spintronic devices owing to their ultrafast spin dynamics. Manipulating coherently their spin dynamics, however, remains a key challenge that is envisioned to be accomplished by spin-orbit torques or direct optical excitations. Here, we demonstrate the combined generation of broadband THz (incoherent) magnons and narrowband (coherent) magnons at 1 THz in low damping thin films of NiO/Pt. We evidence, experimentally and through modeling, two excitation processes of spin dynamics in NiO: an off-resonant instantaneous o
