Is optimism enough? Gay men's beliefs about HIV and their perspectives on risk and pleasure.

BACKGROUND: Measures of HIV treatments optimism were developed in response to increased risk behavior among gay men, but were limited in their capacity to help understand gay men's risk behavior. METHODS: We explored current beliefs about HIV health and transmission and sexual desire and risk behavior in an online survey of 2306 Australian gay men. The survey included free text components. We conducted 40 qualitative interviews to explore how men's beliefs affected decisions about risk behavior. We conducted a principal components factor analysis on the optimism belief items in the survey, an

Early smoking onset may promise initial pleasurable sensations and later addiction.

There is converging evidence suggesting a particular susceptibility to the addictive properties of nicotine among adolescents. The aim of the current study was to prospectively ascertain the relationship between age at first cigarette and initial smoking experiences, and to examine the combined effects of these characteristics of adolescent smoking behavior on adult smoking. It was hypothesized that the association between earlier age at first cigarette and later development of nicotine dependence may, at least in part, be attributable to differences in experiencing pleasurable early smoking s

Mixing pleasures: review of the effects of drugs on sex behavior in humans and animal models.

Drugs of abuse act on the brain circuits mediating motivation and reward associated with natural behaviors. There is ample evidence that drugs of abuse impact male and female sexual behavior. First, the current review discusses the effect of drugs of abuse on sexual motivation and performance in male and female humans. In particular, we discuss the effects of commonly abused drugs including psychostimulants, opiates, marijuana/THC, and alcohol. In general, drug use affects sexual motivation, arousal, and performance and is commonly associated with increased sexual risk behaviors. Second, studi

Food reward sensitivity mediates the association between chemosensory pleasure and adiposity in young adults.

This cross-sectional study investigated whether food reward sensitivity mediates the association between chemosensory pleasure and adiposity in young adults. A total of 300 university students completed the Chemosensory Pleasure Scale (CPS), the Power of Food Scale (PFS), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), alongside anthropometric assessments. Chemosensory pleasure was strongly and positively associated with food reward sensitivity (β = 0.620, p < .001), and this relationship remained robust after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, and depressive symptoms. While chemosensory pleasure showed o

Co-Occurrence of Severe Equine Asthma and Palatal Disorders in Privately Owned Pleasure Horses.

According to the "unified or united airway disease" theory, diseases in the upper and lower airways frequently co-occur because they represent a single morphological and functional unit. Palatal disorders (PDs) and severe equine asthma (SEA) are frequent diseases that, respectively, affect upper and lower equine airways; however, clinical studies focusing on the co-occurrence of PDs and SEA are limited. The present study investigated the prevalence of PDs in horses affected by SEA, and whether prevalence decreased after SEA treatment. Forty-six privately owned horses affected by SEA in exacerb

Framework for internal sensation of pleasure using constraints from disparate findings in nucleus accumbens.

It is necessary to find a mechanism that generates first-person inner sensation of pleasure to understand what causes addiction and associated behaviour by drugs of abuse. The actual mechanism is expected to explain several disparate findings in nucleus accumbens (NAc), a brain region associated with pleasure, in an interconnected manner. Previously, it was possible to derive a mechanism for natural learning and explain: (1) Generation of inner sensation of memory using changes generated by learning; and (2) Long-term potentiation as an experimental delayed scaled-up change by the same mechani

Winter of our contentment: Examining risk, pleasure, and emplacement in later-life physical activity.

In the West, many in the media and the health sector emphasize physical activity as important for the old, so that they can circumvent the impacts of aging and the associated costs. At the same time, neoliberal health discourse advises older people to avoid activities that may cause injuries, such as slips and falls, creating contradictions for older people who participate in sports on ice. In light of these mixed messages, this paper explores how older men understand their bodies through their participation in the seemingly risky sport of ice hockey. I conducted eighteen semi-structured inter

Using Cooking Schools to Improve the Pleasure of Food and Cooking in Patients Experiencing Smell Loss.

Smell loss affects around 15-20% of the population, with a major effect on the quality of life. The most common complaint is the impairment of the eating experience, with around 90% of patients reporting this issue. A study conducted at a specialised Taste and Smell Clinic investigated if food and cooking can positively affect the enjoyment of food, subjective cooking skills, and quality of life in patients with smell loss. The 49 participants in the study received a 5-week cooking school course that focused on emphasizing the other senses to regain the enjoyment of food. Participants gained m

Anatomic maps of erogenous sensation and pleasure in the penis: are there difference between circumcised and uncircumcised men?

BACKGROUND: The effects of male circumcision on sexual function remain controversial. Heterogeneity across previous studies and low-quality scientific evidence have resulted in poor understanding of the effects of circumcision on erogenous sensation of the penis and orgasm function. AIM: In this study we sought to describe and assess differences in erogenous genital sensation and reported orgasm function in circumcised compared with uncircumcised men. METHODS: Adult male subjects who were recruited on a paid anonymous online survey platform were shown illustrations of 12 anatomic regions of

Circuits regulating pleasure and happiness - focus on potential biomarkers for circuitry including the habenuloid complex.

INTRODUCTION: The multiplicity and complexity of the neuronal connections in the central nervous system make it difficult to disentangle circuits that play an essential role in the development or treatment of (neuro)psychiatric disorders. By choosing the evolutionary development of the forebrain as a starting point, a certain order in the connections can be created. The dorsal diencephalic connection (DDC) system can be applied for the development of biomarkers that can predict treatment response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After providing a brief introduction to the theory, we examined neuroanat

The Influence of Pleasure and Attentional Focus on Performance and Pacing Strategies in Elite Individual Time Trials.

UNLABELLED: Recent psychophysiological models of endurance performance explained that pacing strategies and exercise-intensity regulation influence cyclists' ability to produce high mean power output (PO) during time trials (TTs). However, the relationships between these pacing strategies and psychological parameters of the athletes remain unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the impact of pacing strategies on cyclists' mean PO during an elite TT championship and to identify the relationships between these pacing strategies and psychological parameters. METHODS: Mean PO, projected frontal area, at

Pleasures and Risks Associated with Bingo Playing in an Australian Aboriginal Community: Lessons for Policy and Intervention.

Bingo playing in Australian Indigenous communities has received little academic attention. We report here on an exploratory study designed to understand the complex benefits and harms associated with bingo playing for Aboriginal people in Sunraysia, a regional community in Victoria, Australia. The research was strongly participatory, and conducted in collaboration with staff of an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation. Twenty-six members of the Sunraysia Aboriginal community were interviewed, with interviews primarily conducted by workers from the Aboriginal organisation. Echoing resear

Epidemiology of road traffic accidents during pleasure travelling: the evidence from the Island of Crete.

During the six-month period April to September 1995, all 730 road traffic injury victims who contacted any of the three hospitals of the Heraklion District in the island of Crete, directly or through the Medical Emergency Transportation Network, were recorded. A special form was completed containing information about selected characteristics of the victims, nature of the injuries and conditions of the accident. All 39 fatalities owing to road traffic accidents were also registered. In the absence of data concerning the person-time at risk only proportional analyses could be performed. On the b

Ornamental motifs and visual concerns: Exploring aesthetic pleasure and conservation intention in architectural heritage renovation.

In the ongoing efforts of architectural heritage renovation, ornamental motifs serve not only as aesthetic embellishments but also as carriers of cultural symbolism. However, how their visual perception influences public aesthetic judgments and conservation intentions remains underexplored. This study focuses on two types of culturally embedded motifs - the native Chinese dragon and the imported lion - and examines their impact under two visual forms (2D and 3D) within a 2 × 2 experimental framework. A combination of eye-tracking measures and questionnaire assessments was employed with a sampl

[Men who have sex with men negotiating pleasure and prevention through HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis].

Prophylaxis based on antiretrovirals, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis to HIV (PrEP), has the potential to protect the populations most vulnerable to infection, which renews optimism for controlling the HIV epidemic. Against this backdrop, the aim of this article is to analyze the perceptions, negotiations and tensions surrounding the use of PrEP by men who have sex with men (MSM). This is a qualitative cross-section of a multicenter study, analyzing semi-structured interviews with 18 users of specialized HIV/AIDS healthcare facilities in the city of São Paulo/SP. The findings show that negoti

Pleasure and compulsion in gaming: distinct roles of hedonic and compulsive game use in gaming involvement.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stage-related models of problematic gaming suggest that the relative prominence of reward-oriented and compulsivity-related processes may vary across levels of gaming involvement. However, few studies have jointly examined hedonic and compulsive game use across different levels of gaming involvement while accounting for relevant trait-level vulnerabilities. This study investigated their distinct associations with gaming involvement. METHODS: A total of 2259 gamers were included in the cross-sectional analyses, of whom 725 completed a one-year follow-up. The contribution of peripheral nerves to the pleasure from scratching an itch: Evidence from a neuronopathy participant.

Itch is 'an unpleasant sensation of the skin commonly triggering an urge to scratch'. In chronic itch, the persistent itch/scratch cycle is reinforced and sustained by the intense pleasure and reward gained from scratching - sometimes after the itch has been abolished, and despite negative consequences. Scratching an itch recruits multiple areas of the limbic system that control addictive behaviours such as craving and intense pleasure seeking. It is hypothesised here that the pleasure derived from scratching is significantly influenced by small-fibre afferent input, including Aδ and C-tactile
