Perceptions of breast cancer risk after breast density notification in a population-based screening program.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing evidence to support risk-based breast cancer screening, individuals' understanding of personal risk is not well understood. This study compares women's perceptions of risk to their estimated risk, and examines factors associated with perceived risk, including breast density notification, within a population-based screening program. METHODS: A survey of 5784 women measured their perceived risk via three questions: a number from 0 to 100 (numeric), a category from very low to very high (verbal), a comparative category relative to an average woman (comparative). Coronin 1-dependent cell density sensing and regulation of the peripheral T cell population size.

The establishment and maintenance of peripheral T cells is important to ensure appropriate immunity. In mammals, T cells are produced in the thymus before seeding the periphery early in life, and thereafter progressive thymus involution impairs new T cell production. Yet, peripheral T cells are maintained lifelong at approximately similar cell numbers. The question thus arises: what are the mechanisms that enable the maintenance of the appropriate number of circulating T cells, ensuring that T cell numbers are neither too low nor too high? Here, we highlight recent research suggesting a key ro

Cardiometabolic index is associated with increased bone mineral density: a population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a multifactorial bone disease in which lipid metabolism plays an important role. Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measured by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is a critical indicator for diagnosing osteoporosis. The cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel metric that combines two quantitative indicators of blood lipids-triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). This study explores the association between CMI and BMD and seeks to elucidate the role of lipid metabolism in the context of bone health. METHODS: Based on the data of the National

Negative density-dependence buffers against mismatch-induced population decline in the Sinai baton blue butterfly.

Phenological mismatches caused by climate change pose a major threat to global biodiversity, yet relatively few studies have reported population declines resulting from mismatch. It has been hypothesised that density effects may underlie this lack of observed responses by buffering against mismatch-induced population decline. We developed an individual-based model of the critically endangered Sinai baton blue butterfly (Pseudophilotes sinaicus) and its hostplant Sinai thyme (Thymus decussatus), parameterised using real field data, to test this hypothesis. Our model showed that the baton blue e

The relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and arterial stiffness in a Taiwanese population.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There are few studies on the association between HDL-C levels and arterial stiffness (AS). HDL-C levels vary in males and females, and it is not clear whether the relationship between HDL-C levels and AS is influenced by gender. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in the association between HDL-C levels and AS in adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: After excluding subjects using lipid-lowering agent, 7254 subjects were enrolled. The AS was assessed by measuring the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) value. The quartiles of HDL-C were <38, 38-4

Housefly population density correlates with shigellosis among children in Mirzapur, Bangladesh: a time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Shigella infections are a public health problem in developing and transitional countries because of high transmissibility, severity of clinical disease, widespread antibiotic resistance and lack of a licensed vaccine. Whereas Shigellae are known to be transmitted primarily by direct fecal-oral contact and less commonly by contaminated food and water, the role of the housefly Musca domestica as a mechanical vector of transmission is less appreciated. We sought to assess the contribution of houseflies to Shigella-associated moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) among children less than f

Temperature extremes, density dependence, and southern pine beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) population dynamics in east Texas.

Previous studies of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., established that its population in east Texas responds to a delayed density-dependent process, whereas no clear role of climate has been determined. We tested two biological hypotheses for the influence of extreme temperatures on annual southern pine beetle population growth in the context of four alternative hypotheses for density-dependent population regulation. The significance of climate variables and their interaction with population regulation depended on the model of density dependence. The best model included b

Is population bone mineral density variation linked to the marker D11S987 on chromosome 11q12-13?

Our purpose is to test linkage of human chromosome 11q12-13 to BMD variation. Chromosome 11q12-13 has been linked to three BMD-related phenotypes that are inherited as Mendelian traits in human pedigrees: an autosomal dominant high bone mass trait, autosomal recessive osteoporosis pseudoglioma, and autosomal recessive osteopetrosis. A sibling pair study with 374 sibships showed significant linkage of D11S987 to normal BMD variation, with a maximum logarithm of odds score of 3.5. However, a subsequent linkage study with a total of 595 sibling pairs demonstrated reduced significance for linkage

Cropland type shapes arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) population density and species diversity in Northwest Ethiopia.

AMF play critical function in soil fertility and plant nutrition, especially in absorption and translocation of immobile nutrients. Farm and soil fertility management activities enhance crop yield; however, they either positively or negatively impact the AMF population and diversity. This study was aimed at assessing effects of farm and soil fertility management activities on AMF population density, species diversity and richness in North West Ethiopia. Soil samples were obtained from teff (Eragrostis tef) and maize (Zea mays) croplands. AMF spores were extracted, quantified, and identified. A

Low population density relates to more positive behavioural endophenotype in depressed patients on serotonergic antidepressants.

Depression is a severe mental disorder most often treated with serotonergic antidepressants (ADs). Unfortunately, pharmacotherapeutic responses differ greatly between patients, and our mechanistic understanding of AD modulators is limited. According to the undirected susceptibility of change hypothesis, the effects of ADs on depressive behaviour can be influenced by the patient's environment. Using population density as an index of social environment, we investigated in depressed patients whether their living environment modulated the AD treatment effect on a behavioural marker for depression:

Lessons from an eradication under multiple constraints of an island rat population of record density.

Invasive rats threaten island biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems and endangering native species. Although rat eradication has succeeded on many islands, tropical islands present unique management challenges. Strict regulations and financial constraints on some tropical islands further limit proven eradication methods, complicating rodent management. We applied a real-time active adaptive management approach that provided a cautious, cost-efficient, and scientifically grounded pathway to rat eradication, while adhering to strict environmental regulations, on Ilha do Meio, Brazil. The cost was

Environmental Lead Exposure Predicts Lower Bone Mineral Density in a Large Taiwanese Population-Based Study.

Background: Chronic exposure to environmental lead (Pb) may impair bone metabolism and increase the risk of osteoporosis; however, large-scale epidemiological data remain limited. This study aimed to examine the association between long-term environmental Pb exposure and bone mineral density (BMD) in a nationally representative Taiwanese cohort. Methods: A total of 32,239 participants aged 30-70 years were included after excluding those with missing lead exposure or BMD data. BMD was assessed via calcaneal quantitative ultrasound, and T-scores were calculated. Environmental Pb exposure was est

Incidence, Population Density, and Spatial Heterogeneity of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Corn Fields in Ohio.

Soil samples were collected from 425 corn fields in 28 Ohio counties between growth stages V3 and V6 during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Ten morphological groups of plant-parasitic nematodes, namely spiral, lesion, lance, dagger, stunt, pin, ring, stubby-root, cyst, and "tylenchids" (several genera morphologically similar to members of the subfamily Tylenchinae [NCBI Taxonomy] including Cephelenchus, Filenchus, Malenchus, and Tylenchus) were identified. Eight species belonging to six of these groups were characterized. Spiral, tylenchids, lesion, pin, lance, stunt, and dagger nematodes w

Cross-sectional study to assess the association of population density with predicted breast cancer risk.

The Gail and CARE models estimate breast cancer risk for white and African-American (AA) women, respectively. The aims of this study were to compare metropolitan and nonmetropolitan women with respect to predicted breast cancer risks based on known risk factors, and to determine if population density was an independent risk factor for breast cancer risk. A cross-sectional survey was completed by 15,582 women between 35 and 85 years of age with no history of breast cancer. Metropolitan and nonmetropolitan women were compared with respect to risk factors, and breast cancer risk estimates, using

Physical activity and mammographic breast density in a Mediterranean population: the EPIC Florence longitudinal study.

A protective effect of physical activity (PA) on breast cancer (BC) risk has been suggested. Few studies have examined the influence of PA on mammographic breast density (MBD), a strong risk factor for BC. In a prospective study in Florence, Italy, we identified 2,000 healthy women with a mammogram taken 5 years after enrollment. Individual mammograms were retrieved (83%) and MBD assessed according to Wolfe's classification. Detailed information on PA at work and during leisure time, reproductive history, lifestyle and anthropometric measurements at enrollment were available for 1,666 women. I

Decreased axial bone mineral density in perimenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis--a population based study.

OBJECTIVES: Although periarticular osteoporosis is a well-recognised phenomenon in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), there is considerable controversy over whether RA is associated with more generalised osteoporosis. The aetiology of this bone loss is probably multifactorial, including both life-style risk factors and disease-related determinants. Population-based studies on bone mineral density (BMD) in RA have not previously been conducted, and the purpose of the present cross-sectional population-based study was to determine whether patients with RA are at an increased risk of having osteoporosis.

Language Barriers as a Driver of Health Disparity in Bone Density Screening Among the Aging Population.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis widely affects the aging population and often leads to debilitating fragility fractures. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans are important for osteoporosis screening and treatment among aging women to prevent fragility fractures; however, disparities exist across populations. This study analyzed these disparities to help reduce screening inequalities to prevent complications of osteoporosis. METHODS: A sample was used from the 2018, 2020, and 2022 U.S. Medical Expenditure Panel Survey of women who responded about screening dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry utiliza
