Population health management of diabetic kidney disease in Los Angeles county municipal health system.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) worldwide, disproportionately affecting underserved and safety-net populations. RECENT FINDINGS: Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LAC-DHS) Kidney Health Workgroup has developed pragmatic population health frameworks and Expected Practices for DKD co-management with primary-care providers: pragmatic definitions of low kidney function (LKF, <50% of normal) and very low kidney function (VLKF, <25%), and proteinuria severity classification as ea

Population Health Management Tools to Support School-Based Oral Health Partnerships and Address Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries (cavities) experience is prevalent in US children, and national data show rates to be increasing among young children. Disparities are found for those in the low-income and non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic/Latinx groups. Use of caries prevention, specifically dental sealants, is low, even among school-based programs. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: A population health management (PHM) framework may support targeted school-based case management to reduce oral health disparities. PHM-oriented tools were applied to a school-based oral health intervention and developed into a co

Beyond substitution: advanced primary care nursing for population health.

Advanced practice roles in primary care have often emerged in response to workforce pressures and service instability, with medical substitution acting as an initial driver. While these origins are important to acknowledge, focusing on substitution alone risks under representing the contributions that advanced primary care nursing makes towards contemporary healthcare challenges. This article argues that advanced primary care nursing has evolved into an integrative, system level form of practice, shaped by population need rather than task equivalence. Drawing on concepts of continuity, relatio

Iron-sepsis associations in population health revealed by epidemiology.

Sepsis is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, so identifying preventable risk factors is important. Iron is essential for immune function and microbial growth, and iron status varies substantially between individuals, across demographics, and is therapeutically modifiable. Here, we review the current understanding of iron status and associated risks of bloodstream infection, sepsis and severe COVID-19 highlighting relevant population-based studies and Mendelian randomisation studies. Both low and high iron status are associated with increased risk of sepsis. Low iron status is a

Oral Health Epidemiological Investigation in an Urban Homeless Population.

The purpose of this clinical epidemiological investigation was to examine the oral health conditions of homeless people in the city of Rome, Italy. A total of 157 homeless subjects were subjected to a first dental visit, during which anamnestic information was recorded in a digital medical record. A diagnosis of dental disorders was performed by assessing oral hygiene conditions, periodontal health, the presence of caries and/or root residues, and the presence of partial and/or total edentulousness. Caries and missing teeth were evaluated by the DMFT index. The first major criticality was repr

Population-level effects of Hurricane Sandy on adolescent health.

BACKGROUND: Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change. Youth are the largest and most vulnerable group exposed to disasters. More evidence is needed regarding how youth mental health and health behaviors vary based on disaster exposure, how mental health influences health behaviors, and how diverse groups of youth may be differentially affected. METHODS: Using data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and Federal Emergency Management Agency, we examined the impact of Hurricane Sandy (2012) on mental health (sadness, suicidality) and health behaviors (substance u

Men's health: a population-based study on social inequalities.

This study evaluates social inequalities in health according to level of schooling in the male population. This was a cross-sectional, population-based study with a sample of 449 men ranging from 20 to 59 years of age and living in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. The chi-square test was used to verify associations, and a Poisson regression model was used to estimate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios. Men with less schooling showed higher rates of alcohol consumption and dependence, smoking, sedentary lifestyle during leisure time, and less healthy eating habits, in addition to higher pre

Epidemiology of obstructive sleep apnea: a population health perspective.

Population-based epidemiologic studies have uncovered the high prevalence and wide severity spectrum of undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, and have consistently found that even mild obstructive sleep apnea is associated with significant morbidity. Evidence from methodologically strong cohort studies indicates that undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, with or without symptoms, is independently associated with increased likelihood of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, daytime sleepiness, motor vehicle accidents, and diminished quality of life. Strategies to decrease the high prevale

Dental health changes in an Australian Defence Force population.

The dental histories of 100 long-term members of the Royal Australian Air Force were obtained from their dental records. Data relating to dental health status, as measured by the DMF indices and the T-Health scores, were tested to determine if there were any correlations present between changes in dental health and certain risk factors which had been identified by previous studies in the General Dental Service in Scotland. These studies had demonstrated positive relationships between the frequency of dental examination and the frequency with which patients changed their dentist, with the amoun

Reproductive health, population growth, economic development and environmental change.

World population will increase by 1000 million, or by 20%, within 10 years. Ninety-five per cent of this increase will occur in the South, in areas that are already economically, environmentally and politically fragile. Morbidity and mortality associated with reproduction will be greater in the current decade than in any period in human history. Annually, 40-60 million pregnancies will be terminated and 5-10 million children will die within one year of birth. AIDS-related infections, e.g. tuberculosis, will undermine health care in Africa (and elsewhere) and in places AIDS-related deaths will

Health status of the New York City prison population.

During a two-week period in June 1975, all 1,420 prisoners admitted to New York City Correctional Facilities were studied to determine the prevalence of current and past health conditions. Information was obtained from a standard admission health examination. Almost three-quarters of the male and female prisoners were 30 years or less. Of the study population, 57 per cent were black, 24 per cent were Hispanic and 17 per cent were white. Forty-one per cent reported a history of illicit drug use. More than one-quarter of the prisoners reported a present illness and three-fifths received at least

Contested futures of AI ethics for global population health.

Ethical debate about artificial intelligence (AI) for health is fundamental to the good governance and long-term success of this group of technologies in healthcare and public health. Building on foundational contributions on this topic from the field of bioethics, we propose that interdisciplinary work on AI ethics should deepen the already strong engagements that exist with Science and Technology Studies (STS) to uphold core commitments of global population health. STS is an interdisciplinary field that specifically explores the meaning, development and governance of science and technology a

Genetic determinants of muscle health: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Muscle mass is associated with physical and functional performance across adulthood. Its reduction plays a crucial role in the development of age-related conditions such as frailty and sarcopenia. Genetic variations potentially impact muscle health, particularly in an aged population. OBJECTIVES: For this reason, we aimed to evaluate the association between genetic biomarkers and appendicular lean mass index (ALMI), a marker of muscle health, to identify possible risk factors for age-related sarcopenia in a population-based study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We cross-sectionally analy

Endometriosis and mental health: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic gynecologic disorder that leads to considerable pain and a reduced quality of life. Although its physiological manifestations have been explored, its impact on mental health is less well defined. Existing studies of endometriosis and mental health were conducted within diverse healthcare landscapes with varying access to care and with a primary focus on surgically diagnosed endometriosis. A single-payer healthcare system offers a unique environment to investigate this association with fewer barriers to access care while considering the mode of endometrios

Female Reproductive Health - study of an egg donor population.

OBJECTIVE: Infertility is one of the most significant reproductive health issues addressed with medically assisted procreation. This study looked into a potential correlation between the number of mature oocytes harvested and donor biological characteristics in order to propose an anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) cutoff level to optimize the selection of candidates for gamete donation. METHODS: The donors were healthy women included in the Public Gamete Bank between 2011 and 2021. Their results can be used as a national indicator of fertility. RESULTS: We found that women with higher AMH levels
