A novel potential toxic target of PBDEs in cetaceans: Impaired wound healing demonstrated in Indo-Pacific finless porpoise fibroblasts.

Cetaceans, particularly those inhabiting coastal areas, face compounding threats from diverse anthropogenic activities, including vessel strikes, entanglement, and pollution. However, these stressors have predominantly been assessed in isolation, overlooking the potential synergistic effects arising from their frequent co-occurrence. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of toxic flame retardants ubiquitous in marine environments, bioaccumulate in cetaceans posing significant health risks. This study provides the first integrated mechanistic insight into how PBDE exposure not only di

Gastric ulceration caused by genetically identified Anisakis simplex sensu stricto in a harbor porpoise from the Western Pacific stock.

The genus Anisakis is a well-known group of nematodes that parasitize cetaceans as the final host and cause mucosal damage to their stomach. However, little has been done to precisely identify the nematodes recovered from the final hosts, especially in the Western Pacific, because of taxonomic confusion about the discrimination of sibling species and the difficulties of obtaining specimens from cetaceans. We describe the results of genetic identification and histopathological observations of specimens recovered from an ulcerated lesion and stomach contents in the forestomach of a female harbor

Potential association between exposure to legacy persistent organic pollutants and parasitic body burdens in Indo-Pacific finless porpoises from the Pearl River Estuary, China.

A high prevalence of infectious diseases (mostly lungworms) is found in finless porpoises (genus Neophocaena) in the coastal waters of China, which is one of the most dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)-polluted areas worldwide, while its association with contaminant exposure remains undetermined. To address this gap, we investigated blubber levels of polychlorinated diphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) stranded in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of China. In the post-mortem examinat…

Parasitic infections in the East Asian finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis sunameri living off the Chinese Yellow/Bohai Sea coast.

Parasitic disease is among the major causes of health problems in marine mammals. However, little information on parasitic species composition and infection levels in finless porpoises (Neophocaena spp.) is available. In this study, we report the first systematic survey on parasitic infections in the East Asian finless porpoise N. asiaeorientalis sunameri (EAFP) living off the Chinese Yellow/Bohai Sea coast. Using both morphological and molecular methods, 5 parasitic helminths were identified: Campula oblonga in the liver and pancreas; Synthesium seymouri in the pyloric stomach and duodenum am…

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated and methoxylated analogues in the blood of harbor, Dall's and finless porpoises from the Japanese coastal waters.

This study investigated the accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated and methoxylated analogues (OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs) in the blood of harbor porpoises, Dall's porpoises, and finless porpoises stranded or bycaught in Japanese coastal waters and in the North Pacific Ocean. Moreover, we suggested the origins of these contaminants and the factors affecting their pattern of accumulation. Levels of PBDEs in Dall's porpoises were one order of magnitude greater than those in the other species. OH-PBDE and MeO-PBDE levels were comparable to those of PBDEs. Howeve…

Evidence of infectious diseases in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) hunted in the waters of Greenland and by-caught in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The pathological, microbiological and serological findings in harbour porpoises hunted in Greenlandic waters were compared with the findings in animals accidentally caught in fishing gear in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea. The body condition of the Greenlandic animals was good, whereas nine of 23 German harbour porpoises were moderately to markedly emaciated. Both groups were infested with parasites. In the Greenlandic animals parasitism of the aural peribullar cavity with Stenurus minor, of the liver and pancreas with Orthosplanchnus mironovi, of the lungs with Halocercus species and of …

Post-mortem findings and causes of death of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded from 1990 to 2000 along the coastlines of Belgium and Northern France.

Between the years 1990 and 2000, an attempt was made to determine the causes of death of 55 harbour porpoises stranded along the Belgian and northern French coasts. From 1990 to 1996, only five carcasses were collected as against seven in 1997, eight in 1998, 27 in 1999 and eight in 2000. The sex ratio was normal and most of the animals were juvenile. The most common findings were emaciation, severe parasitosis and pneumonia. A few cases of fishing net entanglement were observed. The main microscopical lesions were acute pneumonia, massive lung oedema, enteritis, hepatitis and gastritis. Encep…

Clinical, pathological, and laboratory diagnoses of diseases of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), live stranded on the Dutch and adjacent coasts from 2003 to 2016.

Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in the North Sea live in an environment heavily impacted by humans, the consequences of which are a concern for their health. Autopsies carried out on stranded harbour porpoises provide an opportunity to assess health problems in this species. We performed 61 autopsies on live-stranded harbour porpoises, which died following admission to a rehabilitation centre between 2003 and 2016. The animals had stranded on the Dutch (n = 52) and adjacent coasts of Belgium (n = 2) and Germany (n = 7). We assigned probable causes for stranding based on clinical and path…

The liver fluke Campula oblonga from harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena stranded on the Danish North Sea Coast: updated morphometric and molecular characteristics.

One female specimen of the cetacean harbour porpoise Phocoena Phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758) was found dead on the North Sea coast of Denmark (Jutland) in May 2025. During necropsy severe pathological changes of the liver were observed (hepatic fibrosis, enlarged and thickened biliary duct walls) and when dissecting the biliary ducts six intact trematodes (total length 6.9-7.9 mm, width 1.9-2.0 mm) were recovered. Following conservation in formalin four parasites were haematoxylin stained, one specimen kept unstained but all five mounted for morphological analysis. The sixth specimen conserved in 7

Insights into Campula oblonga (Digenea: Brachycladiidae): Morphological, phylogenetic, and pathological studies in narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) from Korean waters.

Various marine parasites exploit marine mammals as definitive hosts; however, comprehensive parasitological studies remain lacking because of the inherent challenges in host sampling. This study aimed to investigate the pathological effects of Campula oblonga on the hepatobiliary system of the narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis). We detected a digenean species, C. oblonga, in the hepatobiliary systems of 143 out of 196 (72.96 %) narrow-ridged finless porpoises stranded, bycaught or drifting along the Korean coastline between 2016 and 2024. Genetic analyses of Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from the East Asian finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis sunameri (Cetacea: Phocoenidae) in Korean waters.

The East Asian finless porpoise, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis sunameri, is an endangered species that inhabits the coastal marine environments of East Asia. In the present study, we investigated the overall infection status of anisakid nematodes in East Asian finless porpoises from three sea sectors off the Korean Peninsula. The genetic diversity and population genetic structure of the identified nematode species were evaluated. The prevalence of all stages of anisakid nematodes collected from the stomach was 57.55% (61 among the 106 porpoises examined), and 16 of the hosts were found to have a…

Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) found from a harbor porpoise in northern Japan, with comments on a geographical gap with human infection cases in southern Japan.

Even though the cetacean tapeworm Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum occurs in both cold and warm waters, human infections and final host occurrences have been confined to temperate areas in and near Japan. We recently obtained a strobila of this cestode that was excreted from a harbor porpoise accidentally caught offshore of Hokkaido of northern Japan. Genetic analysis of 28S rDNA and cox1 genes confirmed that the cestode was D. stemmacephalum. Our finding sets the northernmost record of D. stemmacephalum in the western Pacific, suggesting that the risk of human infections by this parasite in no

Endoscopic Study of the Oral and Pharyngeal Cavities in the Common Dolphin, Striped Dolphin, Risso's Dolphin, Harbour Porpoise and Pilot Whale: Reinforced with Other Diagnostic and Anatomic Techniques.

In this work, the fetal and newborn anatomical structures of the dolphin oropharyngeal cavities were studied. The main technique used was endoscopy, as these cavities are narrow tubular spaces and the oral cavity is difficult to photograph without moving the specimen. The endoscope was used to study the mucosal features of the oral and pharyngeal cavities. Two pharyngeal diverticula of the auditory tubes were discovered on either side of the choanae and larynx. These spaces begin close to the musculotubaric channel of the middle ear, are linked to the pterygopalatine recesses (pterygoid sinus)

Parasites in stranded cetaceans of Patagonia.

There is an increasing interest in parasites of marine mammals of Argentina. Here, we examined several poorly known cetaceans, i.e., 2 spectacled porpoises and 1 Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoenidae), and 1 Gray's beaked whale and 1 Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphidae); we also updated the parasite information for 1 sperm whale (Physeteridae). These hosts strand only occasionally. We found Anisakis simplex s.l. in 2 spectacled porpoises and the Burmeister's porpoise, and recorded its distribution among the stomach chambers. Anisakis physeteris infected the sperm whale; Corynosoma cetaceum occurred i…

Rising competition among North Sea mammalian top predators: a multi-method perspective on trophic ecology.

Top predators are crucial in shaping ecosystem dynamics by regulating key processes such as prey populations, energy transfer, and community structure, particularly in systems where multiple species compete for the same resources. Understanding their trophic niches and interactions is essential for effective conservation. In the southern North Sea, harbor seals, gray seals, and harbor porpoises are top predators with overlapping prey. This multi-method study examined resource partitioning using complementary stomach content analysis, metabarcoding, and carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur stable isoto…
