OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infection is a common complication of surgery, especially in orthopedics. Povidone-Iodine (PI) is one of the oldest and most commonly used disinfectants in surgery. However, the toxicity and antimicrobial effect of PI have not been discussed. In addition, no study has explored the optimum PI concentration for sterilization and tissue healing. This study explores the germicidal efficacy of different concentrations PI, in addition, the toxicity and antibacterial effects of PI irrigation in fracture surgery are also discussed.

A 77-year-old woman who had never lived in a tropical area was referred to our hospital in November 2006 because of hypoproteinemia and chyluria. Cystoscopy revealed milky urine flowing from left ureteral orifice. Computed tomography showed small lymph nodes around the left side of the aorta but no carcinoma could be seen. We diagnosed her with idiopathic chyluria and recommended low fatty meals, but chyluria did not disappear. In March 2007 povidone iodine was instilled retrogradedly and chyluria disappeared immediately. As of December 2007, chyluria has not recurred.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of povidone-iodine sclerotherapy after percutaneous drainage of simple renal cysts in the treatment of symptomatic patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with symptomatic renal cysts were treated by percutaneous drainage and injection of povidone-iodine solution. The cysts were drained by a nephrostomy tube catheter, and povidone- iodine injections were repeated every 24 hours for 3 days. All patients were followed up by ultrasound examination during a period ranging from 1 to 4 years (mean 1.8 years).

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of 10% povidone--iodine solution for the decontamination of bone allografts. Bone samples were prepared and tested for sterility using a femoral head removed at the time of primary hip replacement. Hyperthyroidism was induced in two burn patients (one a 34-year-old male, with burns covering 80 per cent BSA and the other a 22-year-old female with a 45 per cent BSA burn) by topical treatment with povidone-iodine. Treatment of infections largely encompasses the field of dental medicine. Prevention and management of infection in the oral and maxillofacial region involve every facet of dental care that may be necessary due to caries, periodontal disease, pulpal pathology, trauma, reconstructive and surgical implants. One of the first surgical procedures in the treatment of localized infection commenced with the opening of bulbous abscesses with sharp stones and pointed sticks. The principles for the management of infection basically remain the same although the surgical technique has remarkably improved.
