A qualitative study of the perceptions, practices and socio-psychological suffering related to chronic brugian filariasis in Kerala, southern India.

Lymphatic filariasis is a major health problem in many parts of the tropical world. Although the disease itself is rarely fatal, the disability caused by the swollen extremities, the acute attacks of adenolymphangitis and the consequent sufferings of those afflicted are considerable. The economic burden imposed by lymphatic filariasis is not fully quantified and information on the social and psychological problems caused by the disease is scanty. Semi-structured interviews were therefore used, in southern India, to assess the perceptions, practices and socio-psychological problems of 127 patie

Reflections on the Journal of Applied Psychology for 1989 to 1994: Changes in major research themes and practices over 25 years.

Informal observations concerning journal content indicates that research investigating organizational behavior topics, including work on the structure of groups and determinants and consequences of group process along with the role of leadership in groups, has increased. Some topics have disappeared (e.g., job analysis, human factors, union-related work, consumer behavior) and others are declining (e.g., research methods, psychometrics). Perhaps the biggest change is in the length of articles, which is mostly a function of the inclusion of greater numbers of references and appendix material. P

Psychologically informed practice (PIP) for staff working with offenders with personality disorder: A pragmatic exploratory trial in approved premises.

BACKGROUND: Rates of reoffending and recall are high among released male prisoners with personality disorder. There is a need for innovative intervention to reduce offending and increase staff confidence in working with such men. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel intervention consisting of training and consultation termed 'psychologically informed practice', within community-based 'approved premises' for offenders. METHOD: A pragmatic exploratory trial was used to compare two premises in a South London borough licenced under criminal justice legislation

Maternal psychological adjustment and knowledge of infant development as predictors of home safety practices in rural low-income communities.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among toddlers in the United States. Toddlers spend the majority of time at home, and the use of recommended safety practices can prevent many injuries. OBJECTIVE: Maternal psychological adjustment and understanding of child development are thought to influence the implementation of safety practices; however, the extent to which either factor is related has been examined with small samples and without attention to potential confounding. We hypothesize that mothers' use of safety practices will be higher when mothers have more know

Admission requirements, acceptance rates, and financial assistance in clinical psychology programs. Diversity across the practice-research continuum.

129 directors (80% response) of APA-accredited clinical psychology programs provided information pertaining to admission requirements, acceptance rates, financial assistance, and theoretical orientations. Summary data are presented and comparisons are made among 4 types of clinical programs: PsyD programs, practice-oriented PhD programs, equal-emphasis PhD programs, and research-oriented PhD programs. Clinical doctoral programs held similar expectations for undergraduate preparation in psychology, but robust differences emerged on preferred Graduate Record Examination scores, acceptance rates,

Group-Based Psychological Interventions for Autistic Youth with Chronic Pain: Narrative Review and Practice Considerations for Intensive Interdisciplinary Pediatric Pain Treatment.

Emerging work characterizing youth with chronic pain increasingly recognizes a large cohort of youth with co-occurring chronic pain and autism. This development has prompted questions about how to adapt Intensive Interdisciplinary Pediatric Pain Treatment (IIPTs) and the group-based treatments commonly used in these settings to improve accessibility, acceptability, and utility for autistic participants. There is a need for clinically oriented literature that IIPT programs and clinical trialists can use to guide adaptation efforts. Given long-term risks of inadequately treated pediatric pain, w

Clinical practice guideline on pharmacological and psychological management of adult patients with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and comorbid substance use.

Substantial evidence has confirmed the high comorbidity between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a substance use disorder (SUD). This review synthesizes the pharmacological and psychosocial interventions conducted in ADHD and SUDs, and provides clinical recommendations using the GRADE approach. Our results suggest: 1) In patients with ADHD and alcohol use, atomoxetine is recommended to reduce ADHD symptoms (weak recommendation) and alcohol craving (weak recommendation). 2) In patients with ADHD and cannabis use disorder, atomoxetine is recommended to improve ADHD symptoms (w

A brief screening tool for assessing psychological trauma in clinical practice: development and validation of the New York PTSD Risk Score.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to develop a brief posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) screening instrument that is useful in clinical practice, similar to the Framingham Risk Score used in cardiovascular medicine. METHODS: We used data collected in New York City after the World Trade Center disaster (WTCD) and other trauma data to develop a new PTSD prediction tool--the New York PTSD Risk Score. We used diagnostic test methods to examine different clinical domains, including PTSD symptoms, trauma exposures, sleep disturbances, suicidal thoughts, depression symptoms, demographic factors and oth

Psychological capital, perceptions of clinical stressors, and bullying experiences among Chinese nursing students during clinical practice: a latent profile and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bullying experiences during clinical practice threaten nursing students' learning and professional development. However, existing studies mainly focused on variable-centered associations, with limited exploration of heterogeneous subgroups from a person-centered perspective. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of perceptions of clinical stressors (PCS) in the relationship between psychological capital (PsyCap) and bullying experiences, while identifying latent profiles of bullying experiences. Recognizing distinct subgroups and clarifying influencing mechanisms can help

Innovations in Practice: A pilot randomised trial on smartphone and social media abstinence - effects on sleep quality and psychological wellbeing in adolescents.

There is growing concern that smartphones and social media (S/SM) disrupt adolescent sleep, wellbeing and cognition, yet causal evidence from robust interventions is limited. To assess the acceptability of a total 21-day S/SM detox, we conducted a preregistered (https://osf.io/79zd2) pilot randomised controlled trial with 82 adolescents aged 13-18 years from UK schools. Participants were randomly assigned to a total S/SM detox (N = 26), total S/SM detox with access to a basic 'brick' phone (N = 26) or a business-as-usual control (N = 30). Pre-and post-intervention measures of sleep, wellbeing

A community-based study of hair care practices, scalp disorders and psychological effects on women in a Suburban town in Southwest Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: The scalp hairs on an average African is dry with low tensile strength and a tendency to break easily. This is mostly due to poor penetration of the natural oils on the scalp and the very curly hair texture. Various techniques developed to manage African hair are associated with certain hair and scalp disorders and are sources of distress. OBJECTIVES: This was a cross-sectional survey to compare natural African hair and chemically processed (relaxed) hair to determine the effect of hair care and grooming practices on common scalp disorders and the psychological effect in Nigeria

Psychological resilience and fear of disease progression among hospitalized patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms scheduled for endovascular intervention: implications for nursing practice.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms scheduled for endovascular intervention often experience uncertainty regarding disease progression during pre-treatment evaluation and treatment decision-making. Fear of disease progression arising from this uncertainty can have a substantial impact on patients' psychological health and quality of life. Psychological resilience, as a key psychological resource for coping with stress and uncertainty, has been shown to be associated with various psychological outcomes; however, its role in fear of disease progression among
