Three species of British blackflies, Simulium ornatum s.l., S. erythrocephalum and S. lineatum, were infected with the cryopreserved microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus obtained from human skin-snips in the Sudan. Doses of 5 or 10 microfilariae per fly were administered by intrathoracic injection into females, 1-2 days after eclosion from pupae. Blood alcohol measurements determined by headspace gas chromatography have been challenged on the grounds that the presence of the preservative sodium fluoride in blood samples artificially increases headspace alcohol concentrations due to a salting out effect. Blood collected from mice infected with Babesia microti was frozen at two different rates to -196 degrees C using 19 per cent (w/v) glycerol as cryoprotectant. Survival of the parasites was measured by recording the parasitaemias of mice inoculated with thawed blood. Parasite survival was increased by using a solution of sorbitol in saline rather than Hanks' balanced salt solution as the diluent for the glycerol and for washing the recovered blood.

Tetanus vaccines for human and veterinary use are based on toxoids resulting from a formaldehyde-mediated inactivation of tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT). Due to the high toxicity of TeNT, safety tests are mandatory for each batch of these toxoids. One of the tests addresses the irreversibility of inactivation: The toxoid is stored at 37 °C for 6 weeks and then subjected to in vivo toxicity testing.
