Pathogenesis of Machupo virus infection in primates.

Experimental Machupo virus infection of rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys produced a severe illness consisting of an initial clinical phase and a later neurological phase. Cumulative mortality during the two phases was 80% and 95% respectively. Attempts to alter the pathogenesis with decomplementation or immunosuppression resulted in earlier deaths of the monkeys.

Environmental predictors of filarial infection in Amazonian primates: Ecological factors and primate filarial infection.

Filarial nematode infections are common in primates, but have received little attention in the Neotropics. Epidemiological data on filarial infections in primates are still too sparse to fully understand the complex of this parasitism, especially because of the difficulty in studying the ecology and epidemiology of wild primates.. We describe natural infections by Dipetalonema parasitizing 211 primates belonging to eight free-living primate genera in Amazonia, and assess the relationships between parasitic indicators and climatic (rainfall and river level), ecological (fruiting periods of plan…

The incidence of coccidioidomycosis among nonhuman primates housed outdoors at the California Primate Research Center.

Serum from 191 nonhuman primates housed outdoors from October 1977 to October 1978 at the California Primate Research Center was assayed for the presence of antibody specific for coccidioidin. One Macaca mulatta had coccidioidal antibody which was found to be associated with disseminated coccidioidomycosis. One Macaca radiata had complement-fixing antibody specific for coccidioidin and a pulmonary lesion. Additionally, two other animals had coccidioidal antibody but lacked clinical evidence of disease. The source of infection is suspected to be a severe dust storm originating in southern Calif…

Biomechanics and Evolution of the Primate Tongue.

Primate tongue morphology and function are critical to understanding the evolution of feeding, swallowing, and vocalization. In this paper, we examine the primate tongue as a muscular hydrostat with regionally specialized neuromuscular compartments. We integrate anatomical, kinematic, and biomechanical modeling approaches to analyze how muscle architecture and fiber orientation drive complex tongue deformations during functional behaviors. We evaluate the hydraulic mechanisms underlying tongue-base retraction, highlight species-specific adaptations in macaques and humans, and review primate to

Microbial Contributions to Primate Reproduction.

Reproduction is a complex process, and microbes play a far greater role than previously imagined. This review explores the ways that microbi … s often overlooked in clinical research. Importantly, we compare human studies to those on nonhuman primates, bridging the two areas of inquiry and outlining future research directions. Our aim is to highlight the vast potential for microbes to contribute to all stages of reproduction, and to inspire creative, synthetic future research that moves forward t …

Primate malaria of human importance.

Nonhuman primate (NHP) malaria poses a major threat to the malaria control programs. The last two decades have witnessed a paradigm shift in our understanding of the malaria caused by species other than the traditionally known human Plasmodium species - Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium ovale. The emergence of the malaria parasite of long-tailed macaque monkeys, Plasmodium knowlesi, as the fifth malaria species of humans has made the scientific community consider the risk of other zoonotic malaria, such as Plasmodium cynomolgi, Plasmodium simium, Plas

Rapid evolution of the primate larynx?

Tissue vibrations in the larynx produce most sounds that comprise vocal communication in mammals. Larynx morphology is thus predicted to be … viation from expected allometry with body size. These results imply fundamental differences between primates and carnivorans in the balance of selective forces that constrain larynx size and highlight an evolutionary flexibility in primates that may help explain why we have developed complex and diverse uses of the vocal organ for communication.

The neurobiology of primate vocal communication.

Recent investigations of non-human primate communication revealed vocal behaviors far more complex than previously appreciated. Understanding the neural basis of these communicative behaviors is important as it has the potential to reveal the basic underpinnings of the still more complex human speech. The latest work revealed vocalization-sensitive regions both within and beyond the traditional boundaries of the central auditory system. The importance and mechanisms of multi-sensory face-voice integration in vocal communication are also increasingly apparent. Finally, studies on the mechanisms

Functional Analysis of the Primate Shoulder.

Studies of the shoulder girdle are in most cases restricted to morphological comparisons and rarely aim at elucidating function in a strictly biomechanical sense. To fill this gap, we investigated the basic functional conditions that occur in the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle of primates by means of mechanics. Because most of nonhuman primate locomotion is essentially quadrupedal walking-although on very variable substrates-our analysis started with quadrupedal postures. We identified the mechanical situation at the beginning, middle, and end of the load-bearing stance phase by constructi…

The neuroendocrinology of primate maternal behavior.

In nonhuman primates and humans, similar to other mammals, hormones are not strictly necessary for the expression of maternal behavior, but nevertheless influence variation in maternal responsiveness and parental behavior both within and between individuals. A growing number of correlational and experimental studies have indicated that high circulating estrogen concentrations during pregnancy increase maternal motivation and responsiveness to infant stimuli, while effects of prepartum or postpartum estrogens and progestogens on maternal behavior are less clear. Prolactin is thought to play a r…

Effects of hyperinsulinemia in the primate fetus.

Nonhuman primate models of gestational diabetes have produced fetopathies most similar to those of the human infant of the mother with gesta … evidence that the soft tissue hyperplasia in the fetal macrosomia syndromes in humans and nonhuman primates in which fetal hyperinsulinemia is observed is the direct result of that chronic in utero hyperinsulinemia.

Lumbar spondylectomy in the subhuman primate.

Removal of the 2nd or 3rd lumbar vertebrae (or both) has been accomplished in the subhuman primate (Macaca mulatta). Variations between this animal and the dog in posture, vertebral column anatomy, and spinal cord blood supply made no apparent difference in the results when compared with those in previous experiments. All macaques were able to clinb and to use their hind legs in a normal manner within 3 days after surgical operation. Once hair had regrown over the surgical incision, persons not familiar with the animals were not able to identify the animals that had undergone surgical operatio

Primate model of cerebral hematoma.

Using specific anesthetic agents, permanent segmental occlusion of the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA) causes ischemic infarction limited to the putamen and other deep hemispheral structures in primates. Using this model, 25 rhesus monkeys were subjected to acute arterial hypertension before, during and up to 5 days after onset of MCA occlusion in order to reevaluate the possible role of the ischemic process in pathogenesis of cerebral hemorrhage. Norepinephrine infusion induced prompt rapid rise in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and intracranial pressure (ICP) limited to the duration of i…

The Miocene primate Pliobates is a pliopithecoid.

The systematic status of the small-bodied catarrhine primate Pliobates cataloniae, from the Miocene (11.6 Ma) of Spain, is controversial because it displays a mosaic of primitive and derived features compared with extant hominoids (apes and humans). Cladistic analyses have recovered Pliobates as either a stem hominoid or as a pliopithecoid stem catarrhine (i.e., preceding the cercopithecoid-hominoid divergence). Here, we describe additional dental remains of P. cataloniae from another locality that display unambiguous synapomorphies of crouzeliid pliopithecoids. Our cladistic analyses support

Attention control in the primate brain.

Attention is fundamental to all cognition. In the primate brain, it is implemented by a large-scale network that consists of areas spanning across all major lobes, also including subcortical regions. Classical attention accounts assume that control over the selection process in this network is exerted by 'top-down' mechanisms in the fronto-parietal cortex that influence sensory representations via feedback signals. More recent studies have expanded this view of attentional control. In this review, we will start from a traditional top-down account of attention control, and then discuss more rec

Endometriosis is defined as the existence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, and it includes a chronic, inflammatory reaction … animals. In fact, menstruation and spontaneous endometriosis only occur in women and some non-human primates, making models that employ non-human primates the best animal models for research into the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, spontaneous onset, and treatment of endometriosis.
