Lessons in professionalism: Ending the action gap. The Black doctors research committee and a White female martyr for civil rights - Part 2.

The US continues to lag in health outcomes and equity. In Part 1 of this review, we identified a persistent "Action Gap" as a failure of physician professionalism as defined in the Physician Charter on Medical Professionalism. Competency-Based Medical Education identifies professionalism as an opportunity to reconnect ethical foundations to medical training. Role models like internist Jean Cowsert, MD (1925-1967) and a 7-member Black "Medical Intelligence Group", illustrate how professionalism can transcend rhetoric and become action. Cowsert helped lead hospital desegregation during the imple…

Phonomicrosurgery in Vocal Fold Nodules: Quantification of Outcomes in Professional and Non-Professional Voice Users.

UNLABELLED: There are few data demonstrating the specific extent to which surgical intervention for vocal fold nodules (VFN) improves vocal function in professional (PVU) and non-professional voice users (NVU). The objective of this study was to compare and quantify results after phonomicrosurgery for VFN in these patient groups. METHODS: In a prospective clinical study, surgery was performed via microlaryngoscopy in 37 female patients with chronic VFN manifestations (38±12 yrs, mean±SD). Pre- and postoperative evaluations of treatment efficacy comprised videolaryngostroboscopy, auditory-perc

Infant and early childhood mental health professionals' attitudes toward a system of professional endorsement: A quantitative examination of personal factors, professional support, and perceived benefits.

Demand for recognition of the specialized knowledge and skills required of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) practitioners, researchers, and policymakers resulted in the establishment of standardized professional credentials that document this expertise. However, to date, research on the influences and impacts of an Infant or Early Childhood Mental Health Endorsement on IECMH professionals is scarce. This descriptive, cross-sectional study aims to fill this gap by reporting quantitative findings from a voluntary online survey, the Perceptions of Endorsement Survey (PES), complet

The Art of Caring for the Professional Singer.

Training in care of the voice for the general otolaryngologist has improved with the presence of more fellowship-trained laryngologists within academic training programs. However, preparation for caring for the professional singer goes beyond the basic understanding of voice evaluation, laryngeal imaging, and microlaryngeal surgery. The otolaryngologist must have a deeper understanding of the demands, vocabulary, psyche, and economics of the professional singer to provide optimal care. The ramification of recommendations made or procedures undertaken by the otolaryngologist can have serious co

Health professionals are unaware of anosognosia.

"Implicit awareness" may be inferred from compliance with medical treatment, even when the patient explicitly denies the need for treatment. Such compliance may cause medics and other health professionals to underestimate the frequency of anosognosia and its effects on the lives of patients and carers. We report survey data showing that health professionals do indeed consider anosognosia following stroke to be relatively uncommon and unimportant, in contrast with evidence on its true frequency and impact. Mograbi and Morris' emphasis on the distinction between implicit and explicit awareness m

Injury in professional Irish dancers.

Despite the evolution of Irish dance to professional status in recent decades, only scant investigation of musculoskeletal pain and injury among professional Irish dancers (PIDs) has been undertaken. This study investigated the rate of injury and associated factors among 178 PIDs, using an online questionnaire. One hundred and thirty-seven PIDs (76.7%) reported a previous injury, with the foot (67.9%) and ankle (60.6%) most commonly affected. A mean career rate of 2.25 injuries per dancer was computed. The majority of injuries were minor in nature, and almost half occurred midway through a tou

Radiography: a review for the rehabilitation professional.

In the normal course of practice, rehabilitation professionals are not typically provided with x-rays or radiology reports. Hand therapists who obtain x-rays or reports will glean valuable information about the patient that might otherwise go unidentified. Unique details discovered from an x-ray can contribute to improved clinical treatment plans and functional outcomes. Radiography is the general term used to describe the commonly known imaging procedures of x-ray and fluoroscopy. The purposes of this article are to provide the reader with an overview of basic radiography terminology and prov

Burnout in renal care professionals.

Burnout is defined as "a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment that can occur among individuals who work with people in some capacity", and it can be considered as a result of long-term exposure to occupational stress. Frequently reported occupational stressors among caring professionals are those intrinsic to the job, related to patient demands, related to roles within the organisation, and those related to relationships at work and career development. In renal care however, there are some unique characteristics such as technologically advance

Teaching skills of health professionals.

The purpose of this paper is to describe an analytic method that focuses on health professionals' teaching skills. The method involves comparing live or recorded teacher behaviors with operational definitions of 20 skills known to influence learning outcomes, and assigning numerical ratings on a four-point scale. The videotapes prepared for this symposium are rated and compared with other sessions recorded in health care settings. Virtually all patient educators could improve their teaching skills substantially. Although many questions about teaching skills and education process remain unanswe
