We developed a new diagnostic tool for predicting the severity of ankle sprains just after injury. Since hard data obtained by diagnostic imaging techniques are still imperfect, we decided to use data from individual medical history and signs and symptoms that are part of the admission routine. We review here our results in the management of 314 patients with tetralogy of Fallot. These cases represent 13.5% of the congenital heart defects diagnosed by angiohemodynamic methods in the period 1971-1988. Of the 314 children, 234 were subjected to intracardiac repair. The overall mortality was 25.8%. The surgical mortality rate for the intracardiac repair was above 30% in the period 1972-1979, and decreased to nearly 10% afterwards. Between 1974 and 1981, laparotomies were performed on 233 patients with histologically proven gastric carcinoma. Lymph-node metastases were … nd 30 (12.9%) of other illnesses. The five-year survival rate was 13.3%. There was no difference in prognosis between carcinoma in a residual stomach (after previous partial resection) and a previously unoperated one. 224 of 853 gastric carcinomata in the years 1974-1984 were located in the cardia. Here early stages of carcinoma were less frequent in comparison to the other gastric carcinomas. 46.4% were resectable. Proximal resection was performed in 88 patients, total gastrectomy in 16. Recurrent carcinoma was seen in 27.3%. The 5-year-survival time in all treated patients was 15%, in all resected cases 26%, in all fully resected cases 35%. We conducted serial neurologic examinations on 500 patients in nontraumatic coma to identify factors predicting recovery. One hundred twelve anxiety neurotics originally seen in the medical clinics of a university hospital were interviewed after six years, and their outcome was compared with that of 110 surgical control subjects. Although socially impaired to a greater extent than control subjects, the majority of patients with anxiety neurosis, despite persisting symptoms, were shown to have a favorable outcome.
