The central role of negative emotional states, rejection sensitivity and negative self-beliefs in a complex non-clinical paranoia network model.

PURPOSE: Existing theoretical models suggest that paranoid thoughts develop against the background of increased interpersonal sensitivity, thus heightening feelings of vulnerability, social evaluative concerns, and fears of social rejection. However, the complex interrelatedness among the risk factors contributing to the development of paranoid thoughts remains poorly understood. METHODS: A total of 1019 adults from the non-clinical population participated in a study that employed anetwork approach to explore the complex interactions between paranoid thoughts and severalrisk factors, includin

Love and fear of heights: the pathophysiology and psychology of height imbalance.

Individual psychological responses to heights vary on a continuum from acrophobia to height intolerance, height tolerance, and height enjoyment. This paper reviews the English literature and summarizes the physiologic and psychological factors that generate different responses to heights while standing still in a static or motionless environment. Perceptual cues to height arise from vision. Normal postural sway of 2 cm for peripheral objects within 3 m increases as eye-object distance increases. Postural sway >10 cm can result in a fall. A minimum of 20 minutes of peripheral retinal arc is req

The relationship between cyber victimization and suicide attempts of college students: the role of social rejection and family resilience.

Cyber victimization has become a critical public health issue among college students, strongly linked to suicidal ideation and behavior. However, the specific ways it contributes to suicide attempts-particularly in college student populations-remain under-researched. To clarify the relationship between cyber victimization and suicide attempts. A total of 874 college students from Anhui Province, China (204 males, 670 females; Mage = 19.15, SD = 2.07) completed self-report measures of cyber victimization, social rejection, family resilience, and suicide attempts. Key findings revealed that cybe

'Feeling constantly kicked down': A qualitative phenomenological study exploring rejection sensitivity in autistic adults.

Autistic individuals are at greater risk of social rejection than non-autistic peers. On social media, adults with autism report an extreme sensitivity to social rejection. This qualitative study explored lived experiences of heightened rejection sensitivity in this population. Purposive sampling through social media was used to recruit 19 autistic adults aged 21-71 (11 women, 8 men) who self-reported heightened rejection sensitivity. Face-to-face or online semi-structured interviews were held. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was utilized to analyse the data, and synthesized member ch

Living in a Genetic World: How Learning About Interethnic Genetic Similarities and Differences Affects Peace and Conflict.

Information about the degree of one's genetic overlap with ethnic outgroups has been emphasized in genocides, is frequently learned about through media reporting, and is increasingly being accessed via personal genetic testing services. However, the consequence of learning about whether your own ethnic group is either genetically related to or genetically distinct from a disliked ethnic group remains unknown. Across four experiments, using diverse samples, measures and contexts, we demonstrate that altering perceptions of genetic overlap between groups in conflict--in this case Arabs and Jews-

Testing a mediation framework for the link between perceived discrimination and psychological distress among sexual minority individuals.

Perceived discrimination is a risk factor for mental health problems among sexual minority individuals. An increasing number of research studies have investigated the mechanisms through which stigma-related stressors such as perceived discrimination are linked with adverse mental health outcomes for sexual minority populations. The integrative mediation framework proposed by Hatzenbuehler (2009) underscores the importance of identifying mediators in the association between stigma-related stressors and mental health outcomes. This study tested 3 mediators--expectations of rejection, anger rumin

Negative emotional events that people ruminate about feel closer in time.

Rumination is intrusive, perseverative cognition. We suggest that one psychological consequence of ruminating about negative emotional events is that the events feel as though they happened metaphorically "just yesterday". Results from three studies showed that ruminating about real world anger provocations, guilt-inducing events, and sad times in the last year made these past events feel as though they happened more recently. The relationship between rumination and reduced temporal psychological distance persisted even when controlling for when the event occurred and the emotional intensity o…

Effects of Virtual Pedagogical Agents and Instructional Content Type on Learners' Experience in Online Learning: Evidence from Behavioral, Eye-Tracking, and EEG Data.

Online learning has become an important means of acquiring knowledge. Virtual pedagogical agents have gradually evolved from auxiliary tools into intelligent instructional media capable of affective interaction. However, how these agents affect learning outcomes remains unclear. Integrating social agency theory and cognitive load theory, this study developed a model in which virtual pedagogical agent type was the independent variable; learning experience was the dependent variable; psychological distance, emotional attachment, and attentional engagement were mediators; and instructional conten…

When rejection backfires: Social exclusion and economic decision-making in gamblers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Economic decision-making deviates from rational choice models and is influenced by social factors, particularly fairness considerations and belonging needs. Social exclusion and altruistic punishment are intended to promote behavioral conformity, yet paradoxically may exacerbate rather than correct targeted behaviors among individuals with addictions already experiencing chronic rejection. Several preliminary studies show that social exclusion increases money desirability in general populations, however, the interaction between acute social exclusion and economic decision-

Educators' evaluations of children's ideas on the social exclusion of classmates with intellectual and learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Reasons underlying the social exclusion of children with intellectual or learning disabilities are not entirely understood. Although it is important to heed the voices of children on this issue, it is also important to consider the degree to which these ideas are informed. The present authors invited educators to evaluate the content of children's ideas on the causes of social exclusion. METHOD: Educators thematically sorted and rated children's ideas on why classmates with intellectual or learning disabilities are socially excluded. Sorted data were analysed with multidimensional

Once hurt, twice shy: Social pain contributes to social anxiety.

Social rejection has been consistently linked to the development of social anxiety. However, mechanisms underlying the relation have been largely unexplored, which presents an obstacle to fully understanding the origins of social anxiety and to the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies. Two studies were conducted to test the hypothesis that the emotion of social pain following rejection promotes the development of social anxiety in subsequent situations. In Study 1, undergraduate participants were exposed to 2 social situations (Cyberball) 2 days apart. Participants who

'Ego-dystonicity' in homosexuality: An Indian perspective.

BACKGROUND: Homosexual persons are targets of verbal and physical abuse, discrimination and face legal disadvantages in many countries, including India. These external factors could play a role in determining discomfort with their sexuality. AIMS: We ascertained the association between ego-dystonicity of sexual orientation and indices of perceived acceptance, stigma and awareness of possible normative lifestyles. METHODS: Fifty-one self-identified adult homosexual men were assessed using online questionnaires that covered information including their socio-demographic details; a Visual Analog

Altering the visuomotor gain. Evidence that motor plans deal with vector quantities.

Two experiments investigated the effects of providing nonveridical knowledge of the results (KR) in a visuomanual task in which participants pointed to briefly (200 ms) presented targets without seeing their hand. By showing after each trial the movement endpoint displaced radially with respect to its true position, we were able to alter progressively the gain of the visuomanual loop. In experiment 1, the KR was provided only for transversal movements and for one target distance, but the effect generalized to all directions and all distances. Moreover, it also generalized to the other hand tha

Why avoidance? The impact of childhood emotional abuse on social avoidance.

Childhood is a critical period for the development of social relationships, and experiences of abuse during this time can have long-lasting negative effects on social interactions. This study has explored the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and social avoidance in college students, using the social cognitive model of rejection sensitivity and the model of social support degradation as theoretical frameworks. A total of 422 Chinese university students (285 females and 157 males), aged from 19 to 25 (M = 21.27, SD = 3.47), participated in this study. Data were collected using diff

Longitudinal Effects of Peer Rejection on Reactive/Proactive Aggression: Risk Accumulation or Cognitive Dissonance?

Although peer rejection has been associated with increased reactive and proactive aggression, previous studies have predominantly used cross-sectional designs, which limits causal inferences. Moreover, current research on the specific mechanisms of different aggression subtypes remains in adequate. This longitudinal study aimed to (1) Examine whether peer rejection differentially predicts reactive and proactive aggression, (2) Test whether rejection sensitivity mediates these pathways and (3) Compare the Cumulative Risk Theory and Cognitive Dissonance Theory by exploring how hostile attributio

Stigma-Related Stress and Its Correlates Among Men with Pedophilic Sexual Interests.

Despite decades of research on the adverse consequences of stereotyping and discrimination for many stigmatized groups, little is known about how people with pedophilia perceive and react to stigma. In this article, we present a framework that outlines how stigma-related stress might negatively affect emotional and social areas of functioning, cognitive distortions, and the motivation to pursue therapy, all of which may contribute to an increased risk of sexual offending. We tested our hypotheses in an online survey among self-identified German-speaking people with pedophilia (N = 104) using a

Encouraging attention to inclusion cues enhances P3b responses and subjective amelioration after social exclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that attentional allocation to inclusion cues is associated with subjective amelioration from social exclusion. However, individuals high in avoidant attachment show reduced attention to inclusion cues while still exhibiting subjective amelioration comparable with those low in avoidance. This study examined whether experimentally encouraging attention to inclusion cues enhances attentional processing and subjective amelioration following social exclusion, and whether these effects differ as a function of avoidant attachment. METHODS: Thirty-six undergradu

Conforming to AI vs. humans: The moderating effects of social exclusion and task type.

Conformity is often understood as a socially motivated process; however, individuals increasingly conform not only to humans but also to artificial intelligence (AI). It remains unclear whether the same motivational and task-related mechanisms underlie conformity across these sources. To examine whether conformity to AI reflects task- and motivation- dependent processes similar to those underlying conformity to humans, we conducted an online conformity experiment in which we manipulated opinion source (AI vs. human) and task type (objective vs. subjective), while measuring participants' self-r

["I tried so hard to be normal… that I ended up exhausting myself.": Forms of social exclusion experienced by young autistic adults].

Introduction Autistic people are particularly at risk of experiencing forms of violence, ostracism or discrimination, which lead to social exclusion in the course of their lives. However, very little research has addressed social exclusion from its subjective dimensions (e.g. attitudes, opinions, social representations and self-perception) and the relational contexts in which these experiences take shape and affect well-being and mental health. This article presents the results of qualitative research conducted with young autistic adults in Quebec who took part in asynchronous online discussio
