PsicoCare: a pilot randomized controlled trial testing a psychological intervention combining cognitive-behavioral treatment and positive psychology therapy in acute coronary syndrome patients.

BACKGROUND: Although psychological factors play a significant role in the onset and prognosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), psychological interventions (PIs) are rarely included in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs due to inconclusive evidence regarding specific intervention components and effect sizes. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a PI based on cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) and positive psychology therapy (PPT) in improving psychological and clinical outcomes in patients with ACS. METHODS: This PsicoCare trial was an open-label randomized controlled trial that com

Post-test adverse psychological effects and coping mechanisms amongst HIV self-tested individuals living in couples in urban Blantyre, Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Mandatory face-to-face counselling is necessary during HIV testing but difficult to implement within the context of HIV self-testing. We investigated adverse psychological effects and coping mechanisms following HIV-positive and HIV-discordant test results amongst self-tested individuals living in couples in urban Blantyre, Malawi. METHODS: Qualitative data from 35 in-depth interviews with self-tested individuals living in couples for more than 3 months were collected and analysed using thematic content analysis. RESULTS: Adverse psychological effects seemed to mostly occur amo

Narrative review on ethical and psychological issues raised by genetic and genomic testing in pediatric oncology care.

In pediatric oncology, genetic and genomic tests are proposed throughout the care pathway for many reasons (e.g., cancer characterization, identification of the most appropriate treatment, patient selection for clinical trials, identification of tissue/organ donors, or risk of relapse prediction). Despite the many different approaches (somatic or germline testing, targeted gene or genome sequencing), the implicated individuals are confronted with situations that may intersect and that are interesting to compare. No study has identified and analyzed the available works on these new practices in

Psychological distress following multi-gene panel testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer risk.

Advances in our understanding of the genetic landscape of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) have led to the clinical adoption of multi-gene panel testing. Panel testing introduces new sources of genetic uncertainty secondary to the inclusion of moderate- and low-penetrance genes, as well as the increased likelihood of identifying a variant of uncertain significance (VUS). This cross-sectional study explored the post-test psychological functioning of women who underwent multi-gene panel testing for HBOC susceptibility genes. Two hundred and ninety-five women who underwent panel testin

Role of psychological background in cancer susceptibility genetic testing distress: It is not only about a positive result.

Clinical and familial factors predict psychological distress after genetic testing for cancer susceptibility. However, the contribution of an individual's psychological background to such distress is unclear. This study aims to analyze the psychological impact of genetic testing and to identify the profile of individuals at higher risk. This is a longitudinal multicenter study of individuals undergoing genetic testing for cancer susceptibility. Demographic, clinical, genetic, familial, and psychological (personality types, cancer worry) characteristics were assessed by validated questionnaires

Psychological Testing in a Complex Case: Psychosis in Co-occurring PTSD, Gender Dysphoria, and Bipolar Disorder.

This case report investigates the concurrent presence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder (BD) in the transgender population. We present a case involving a 21-year-old female-to-male transgender individual (preferred pronouns - they/them). The patient had a history of psychosis, trauma, gender dysphoria (GD), inconsistent hormone (testosterone) treatments, and a self-attributed diagnosis of "associative identity disorder" with 21 distinct "identities." They had two emergency admissions in quick succession, both characterized by analogous symptoms. Contributing factors

Psychological Impact of Predictive Genetic Testing for Inherited Alzheimer Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia: The IT-DIAfN Protocol.

AIM: Our aim was to evaluate the psychological impact of predictive genetic testing in individuals at-risk for inherited dementia who underwent a structured counseling and testing protocol. METHODS: Participants were healthy at-risk relatives from families with at least one affected patient, in whom a disease-associated genetic variant had been ascertained. A comprehensive psychological assessment (personality, anxiety and depression, quality of life, coping strategies, resilience and health-related beliefs) was administered at baseline, at 6 months and 12 months follow-up. RESULTS: Twenty-f

Relations among premorbid weight, referral weight, and psychological test scores for patients with anorexia nervosa.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that, in anorexia nervosa, patients with a low premorbid weight are associated with a low weight at referral and that premorbid weight, referral weight, and weight loss are associated with mood states. The changes of Body Mass Index from premorbid to referral, the duration of illness, and the psychological scores on the Profile of Mood States and the Cornell Medical Index-Health Questionnaire were examined in 49 anorexia nervous patients. Body Mass Index at referral of patients with lower premorbid Body Mass Index was significantly lower tha

Integrated quantitative sensory testing and psychological phenotyping dataset for capsaicin-induced neuropathic pain susceptibility.

Experimental pain models are used to investigate the analgesic effects in healthy volunteers during the early stages of drug development. However, the predictive value of these models for clinical pain requires continuous reinforcement. One question is whether neuropathic pain patterns can be induced in healthy individuals. Another question is whether healthy volunteers can be pre-selected based on the inducibility of neuropathic-like sensory patterns under controlled experimental conditions. A third question is whether psychological traits contribute to this susceptibility. The present datase

Comparing quantitative sensory testing and psychological factors between individuals with acute and chronic shoulder pain.

OBJECTIVES: Shoulder pain is a prevalent condition with high rates of transition from acute to chronic pain. Prior literature reports inconsistent changes in pain sensitivity among individuals with chronic pain and healthy controls. However, limited evidence has directly compared biopsychosocial factors among individuals with acute and chronic shoulder pain. METHODS: Participants completed pain-related psychological questionnaires (fear of pain, catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, depression, anxiety, and self-efficacy), quantitative sensory testing (Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT), Heat Pain Thres

The effect of cranial techniques on the heart rate variability response to psychological stress test in firefighter cadets.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a simple tool to monitor cardiovascular stress. The proper function of the cardiovascular system is a problem among firefighters. Physical activity has health benefits correlated with psychological stress. Physically active people should be more resilient to psychological stress, but this has not always been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to determine whether cranial techniques would have an effect on HRV parameters. Osteopathy in the cranium reduces stress and improves cardiovascular function. Fifty-seven firefighter cadets aged 18-24 years (21.63 ± 1.

Incarceration history and ethnic bias in hiring perceptions: An experimental test of intersectional bias & psychological mechanisms.

This study seeks to better understand mechanisms of bias against formerly incarcerated and ethnically minoritized job applicants as well as the interactive effects of those two identities. In a sample of 358 hiring managers in the United States, the 2 (incarceration history) x 4 (ethnicity) experiment will manipulate incarceration history and ethnicity through job application materials, and measure hireability, and perception of job applicants along dimensions of sociability/warmth, competence, and morality. We will use a moderated mediation model to test hypotheses regarding a main effect of

Can cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing alleviate psychological distress in early miscarriage? A commentary.

BACKGROUND: Psychological, emotional, and mental distress affects many patients who experience early pregnancy loss (EPL). A common concern is that the patient's actions or choices caused the loss. Understanding the cause of EPL may improve the distress of EPL patients and their partners. Chromosomal abnormalities leading to a significant portion of EPL. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing, a non-invasive test providing high quality information about the chromosomal makeup of a fetus, may offer assurance that a fetal abnormality caused the loss, and provide more certainty or closure in processing EP

Long-term predictors for psychological outcome of pre-symptomatic testing for late-onset neurological diseases.

This longitudinal study aimed at determining predicting variables for middle and long-term psychological disturbance due pre-symptomatic testing (PST) for two late-onset neurological diseases, Huntington disease (HD) and TTR (transthyretin protein) familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) Val30Met (now classified as Val50Met). 196 clinical records of persons who performed PST at least three years ago and answered to the two stages of evaluation (before PST and least 3 years after disclosure of results) were analysed. For this purpose, regression analysis was performed, showing that the Positive S

To know or not to know: an update of the literature on the psychological and behavioral impact of genetic testing for Alzheimer disease risk.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is a genetically heterogenous disorder; in rare cases autosomal dominantly inherited mutations typically cause early-onset familial AD (EOAD), whereas the risk for late-onset AD (LOAD) is generally modulated by genetic variants with relatively low penetrance but high prevalence, with variants in apolipoprotein E (APOE) being a firmly established risk factor. This article presents an overview of the current literature on the psychological and behavioral impact of genetic testing for AD. The few studies available for presymptomatic testing for EOAD showed that only a very

Evaluating the necessity for universal screening of prospective oocyte donors using enhanced genetic and psychological testing.

BACKGROUND: To minimize the potential for harmful inheritable conditions, donors are rigorously screened according to standard guidelines, yet such guidelines may not be sufficient to exclude egg donors with certain known inheritable conditions. We compared universal screening of oocyte donors with Tay-Sachs, Fragile X, karyotype and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) versus standard American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) guidelines that do not include such testing. METHODS: In this 12 year retrospective cohort study, results of enhanced universal screening of al

Psychological follow-up of presymptomatic genetic testing for spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) in Cuba.

Presymptomatic testing for spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) in Cuba started five years ago. We have now investigated the psychological impact of test results on 150 individuals at 50% risk for SCA2. In a prospective study, psychological instruments were used to evaluate depression, anxiety and family functioning (1) before testing and (2) one year after disclosure of the test result. One year after, anxiety and depression levels decreased both in carriers and non-carriers, but anxiety decreased significantly more in carriers. Pathological levels of anxiety were seen mostly in members of dy

Social and psychological factors associated with willingness to test for HIV infection among young people in Botswana.

In spite of extensive campaigns to promote voluntary counselling and testing through the radio, television, newspapers and mass rallies, testing for HIV remains a challenge in Botswana. Using a representative sample of 1,294 students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions, the study investigates the effects of socio-demographic background variables, family coherence, interpersonal relations, sexual experience and knowledge about sexual health, on willingness to test for HIV infection. The results show that willingness to test for HIV infection was negatively associated with being sex
