Evaluation of the psychophysiological functions in humans exposed to trichloroethylene.

Salvini, M., Binaschi, S., and Riva, M. (1971).Brit. J. industr. Med.,28, 293-295. Evaluation of the psychophysiological functions in humans exposed to trichloroethylene. To provide data on the psychophysiological efficiency of human beings exposed to solvent vapour currently used in the industry the effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) were evaluated by exposing six male university students to an average vapour concentration of 110 p.p.m. for two s4-hour exposures, separated by a 1½-hour interval. Each subject was examined on two different days, on one day undertaking a set of tests in an atmos

Arousal modulation of memory and amygdala-parahippocampal connectivity: a PET-psychophysiology study in specific phobia.

Phobic fear is accompanied by intense bodily responses modulated by the amygdala. An amygdala moderated psychophysiological measure related to arousal is electrodermal activity. We evaluated the contributions of electrodermal activity to amygdala-parahippocampal regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during phobic memory encoding in subjects with spider or snake phobia. Recognition memory was increased for phobia-related slides and covaried with rCBF in the amygdala and the parahippocampal gyrus. The covariation between parahippocampal rCBF and recognition was related to electrodermal activity su

Psychopathy, pain, and pain empathy: A psychophysiological study.

The present study examined whether people higher in psychopathy experienced less self-reported and psychophysiological nociceptive pressure than people lower in psychopathy. We also examined whether psychopathy affects empathy for others' pain via self-reported and psychophysiological measures. Three hundred and sixty-nine students (18-78 years; M = 26, SD = 9.34) were screened for psychopathic traits using the Youth Psychopathy Inventory (YPI). Stratified sampling was used to recruit 49 adults residing in the highest (n = 23) and lowest (n = 26) 20% of the psychopathy spectrum. Using skin con

Analysis of coronary angiography related psychophysiological responses.

BACKGROUND: Coronary angiography is an important tool in diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, it is the administration is relatively stressful and emotionally traumatic for the subjects. The aim of this study is to evaluate psychophysiological responses induced by the coronary angiography instead of subjective methods such as a questionnaire. We have also evaluated the influence of the tranquilizer on the psychophysiological responses. METHODS: Electrocardiography (ECG), Blood Volume Pulse (BVP), and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) of 34 patients who underwent coronary angiography oper

Psychophysiological correlates of dissociation, handedness, and hemispheric lateralization.

Dissociation involves a disruption of typically integrated functions including consciousness, information perception, and memory; however, dissociation may not always be of a pathologic nature. Increasingly, studies are identifying relations between inconsistent handedness, mixed hemispheric lateralization, and dissociative symptomatology in both clinical and nonclinical populations. The current study explored whether a nonclinical sample of individuals scoring high in dissociation would display an inconsistent handedness in conjunction with a left hemispheric lateralization as measured by ele

[Psychophysiological aspects of duodenal ulcer in young patients].

SMALL and Spilberg-Khanin questionnaires were used to examine psychological state while statistical and spectral analysis of heart rate at rest and orthostasis to evaluate vegetative status in 86 patients aged 15-24 years with duodenal ulcer (DU). Patients with mild DU had the least psychological and vegetative alterations primarily of the neurotic trend with a relative enhancement of the nervous sympathetic component. A severe disease was characterized by the greatest psychovegetative changes--high SMALL scales, anxiety, stress of the vegetative nervous systems at rest and orthostasis. Thus,

[The effect of medikhronal on the psychophysiological and metabolic processes in alcoholism].

Pathopsychological examination, biochemical analysis of blood and urine as well as electroencephalogram (REG) were made in patients of the second (II) stage of alcoholism. The state of higher nervous activity (HNA) before and after treatment with antialcoholic drug medichronal was also analyzed. It has been shown that the course of treatment with medichronal applied to patients with alcoholism results in the removal of the inclination to alcohol, to improvement of functional state of the central nervous system, as well as ethanol (E), acetaldehyde (AcA) and catecholamines (CA) exchange, the di

Hormones and sexuality in postmenopausal women: a psychophysiological study.

Sexual function, including vaginal atrophy, and hormonal status, were studied in 42 naturally postmenopausal women. Vaginal pulse amplitude and subjective sexual responses during self-induced erotic fantasy and during erotic films were compared with responses of a small number of premenopausal women. As predicted, vaginal atrophy was related to estrogens but not to complaints of vaginal dryness and dyspareunia. No significant relationship was found between hormones and sexual function. Unexpectedly, most of the few correlations that did reach significance involved prolactin. The fact that prol

Dementia and depression in old age: psychophysiological aspects.

This study describes the psychophysiological results of a larger investigation of the clinical, morphological, psychometric and psychophysiological aspects of dementia of the Alzheimer type and depression in elderly patients. Healthy volunteers provided a further measure of control. It was found that widely used clinical rating scales delineated the 3 groups of subjects to a significant degree. The average frequency of the electroencephalogram (EEG), the P2-N2 peak-to-peak amplitude and P3 latency of the auditory evoked potential and a characteristic downward shift of the EEG power spectrum di

[Pain in the fetus: neurobiological, psychophysiological and behavioral aspects.].

Until a short time ago, the view prevailed worldwide that children were less sensitive to pain than adults, and such operations as circumcision were performed in babies without adequate anesthesia or analgesia. This view is now considered a misconception, as psychophysiological and behavioral studies show that even neonates have a well-functioning nociceptive system. Nociception generally refers to the neural and sensory aspects of pain, which do not necessarily include conscious experience. There is no discontinuity in the development of the nervous system during birth, and therefore it can b

Psychophysiological aspects of phobic fears: an evaluative review.

The present paper is a review of the use of psychophysiology in diagnosis and treatment of simple phobias. The paper begins with a definition and characterization of phobic fears, together with a description of prevalence rates, age onset, and gender differences. Acquisition is then discussed within a Three-Systems model. Psychophysiological measures are described, and the typical response patterns obtained in phobic reactions are outlined. Special attention is devoted to the paradoxical response seen in blood injury phobias, and the use of beta-blockers and other pharmacological drugs. The pa…

Metabolic and psychophysiologic studies of cannabidiol-hexobarbital interaction.

Cannabidiol (CBD), 600 mg/day orally for 5 to 12 days, inhibited hexobarbital metabolism in ten subjects. Hexobarbital oral clearance was 36% lower and apparent volume of distribution was 35% smaller, with no change in half-life during CBD. In four subjects who received intravenous and oral hexobarbital, systemic clearance was 36% lower while bioavailability was 10% greater during CBD. Hexobarbital increased fatigue and tremor, impaired eye-tracking performance, and altered the electroencephalogram. Hexobarbital effects were not affected by CBD. Inhibition of metabolism of other drugs should b

[Experimental psychophysiological studies on the effects of fenetylline and mefenorex].

16 male subjects were tested 1--7 h after the application of either 40 mg of the anorectic mefenorex, 50 mg of the stimulant fenetylline or a placebo by a battery of psychophysiological and psychological methods. Two problems of basic psychological interest were investigated: 1. covariation of appetite and central stimulation; 2. indicators of activation assessed by different parameters. The results concerning the first problem were inconclusive. The results with respect to the second show that pharmacological substances may cause dissociation of different indicators of activation.

Psychophysiology of facial emotion recognition in psychopathy dimensions and oxytocin's role: A scoping review.

Psychopathy is characterized by social impairments that hinder effective societal functioning. It comprises two main dimensions: "Interpersonal-affective" and "Lifestyle-antisocial," each associated with distinct patterns of traits and central and peripheral neurocorrelates, particularly concerning social salience and oxytocin function. In this review, we systematically identified and synthesized evidence from studies investigating oxytocin's role in the psychophysiological correlates of emotion recognition across psychopathy dimensions. However, as no such direct studies were identified, we i

Effects of estrogen, androgen, and progestin on sexual psychophysiology and behavior in postmenopausal women.

To assess the contribution of gonadal steroids to sexual behavior in aging women, we conducted a 10-week, double-blind, hormone replacement study of 40 naturally menopausal women (mean age, 58.3 yr). Prospective measurements of basal and stimulated vaginal vasocongestion and daily self-reports of mood, physical symptoms, sexual behavior, and perceived sexual pleasure were collected. Daily treatments were either conjugated equine estrogen, i.e. Premarin (P; 0.625 mg), Premarin and medroxyprogesterone acetate, i.e. Provera (PP; 0.625 and 5 mg, respectively), Premarin and methyltestosterone (PT;
