Stable polymorphism of cooperators and punishers in a public goods game.

The role of punishment in the maintenance of cooperation has been emphasized recently. However, the maintenance of punishment is not an obvious consequence because punishment itself is also a public good; it is costly to perform and hence vulnerable to exploitation. For example, cooperative punishers, who help others and punish free riders, are disadvantageous in competition against pure cooperators, who cooperate but do not punish free riders. In addition, pure punishers, who do not help others but punish free riders, have been considered to be selfish in conventional models, because they do …

Learning and generalization from reward and punishment in opioid addiction.

This study adapts a widely-used acquired equivalence paradigm to investigate how opioid-addicted individuals learn from positive and negativ … outcomes in order to obtain reward, and to map other stimuli to correct outcomes in order to avoid punishment; some stimuli were implicitly "equivalent" in the sense of being paired with the same outcome. On the initial training phase, both groups performed similarly on learning to obtain reward, but as memory load grew, the control group outperformed the a …

Enuresis and Punishment: The Adverse Effects on Child Development and on Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of punishment in enuretic children and how the punishments can influence therapy response. METHODS: We enrolled 218 enuretic children. The children and their families were asked to participate in the study at the end of the clinical evaluation. RESULTS: The analysis of the questionnaires shows that at least one punishment because of nocturnal enuresis (NE) had been applied to 27 out of 218 (12.4%) children. Punishment methods were reprimanding in 19 out of 27 (70.4%), depriving of sleep in 11 out of 27 (40.7%), mildly beating in 3 out of 27 (11.1%), leaving…

History of postpartum depression and the odds of maternal corporal punishment.

INTRODUCTION: Corporal punishment is closely related to physical abuse of children and is associated with several negative characteristics and experiences in children and youths. This study examined the relative unique contribution of 6 variables (social support, socioeconomic status, depression, self-efficacy, knowledge of child development, and history of postpartum depression) to maternal corporal punishment of children. METHOD: A sample of 76 mothers was dichotomized into those who never spanked or hit with an object and those who have spanked or hit with an object. The mothers were recru…

Treatment as punishment: forensic psychiatry in The Netherlands (1870-2005).

This article provides an overview of the development of forensic psychiatry in the Netherlands from the late nineteenth to the early twenty- … g up. To this day the history of this legislation is characterized by the intrinsic tension between punishment and security on the one hand and treatment and re-socialization on the other. Whether at some point one or the other prevailed was largely tied to the social climate with respect to law, order and authority.

Electrophysiological ratio markers for the balance between reward and punishment.

It has been argued that prototypical forms of psychopathology result from an imbalance in reward and punishment systems. Recent studies suggest that the ratios between slower and faster waves of the electroencephalogram (EEG) index this motivational balance and might therefore have diagnostic value for psychopathology. To scrutinize this notion, the present study investigated whether resting state EEG ratios would predict decision making on the Iowa gambling task (Iowa-GT), a well-known marker for motivational imbalance. A resting state EEG recording was acquired followed by the Iowa-GT in twe…

Ordinary physical punishment: is it harmful? Comment on Gershoff (2002).

E. T. Gershoff (2002) reviewed processes that might mediate and contexts that might moderate the associations between corporal punishment (CP) and child behaviors and provided an account of the methodological weaknesses of the research reviewed in her meta-analyses. In this examination of Gershoff, the authors argue that the biases and confounds in the meta-analyses further limit any causal inferences that can be drawn concerning the detrimental "effects" of CP on associated child behaviors. The authors suggest that undesirable child outcomes are associated with CP because the construct marks …

Threats of corporal punishment as verbal aggression: a naturalistic study.

This study examined firsthand observations of adults (N = 70) making public verbal threats to physically punish or hurt children. While many adults threatened the child with a "spanking," most used a variety of other terms, some euphemistic and some menacing, to label the threatened event. Angry shouting seemed rare, and swearing was almost nonexistent. Many threatening adults, however, also hit the child. In the course of threatening their children, adults typically attributed unshared responsibility for group problems to the child. They also normalized their own aggression by acting as thoug

Effects of phencyclidine-like drugs on punished behavior in rats.

The effects of phencyclidine (PCP) and a number of PCP-like drugs on punished responding in rats were compared to those of chlordiazepoxide … cine and (-)-beta-cyclazocine all resulted in selective increases in rates of responding during the punishment component. Two drugs with predominant opiate-agonist actions in vivo, (-)-alpha-cyclazocine and morphine, did not increase punished responding at any dose tested. Childhood trichotillomania treated indirectly by punishing thumb sucking.

Trichotillomania was treated in a developmentally normal three-year-old by punishing thumb sucking. A behavioral analysis indicated a chain of behaviors that began with hair pulling and terminated in thumb sucking. The parents punished the thumb sucking by applying a bad tasting substance to the thumb. Both hair pulling and thumb sucking were rapidly eliminated. The child remained symptom free at 40 month follow-up. This study represents the third time trichotillomania has been treated in a preschooler indirectly by targeting finger sucking as the behavior to change. The significance of treati

Promising intervention strategies to reduce parents' use of physical punishment.

The strong and ever-growing evidence base demonstrating that physical punishment places children at risk for a range of negative outcomes, coupled with global recognition of children's inherent rights to protection and dignity, has led to the emergence of programs specifically designed to prevent physical punishment by parents. This paper describes promising programs and strategies designed for each of three levels of intervention - indicated, selective, and universal - and summarizes the existing evidence base of each. Areas for further program development and evaluation are identified.

Childhood Corporal Punishment and Future Perpetration of Physical Dating Violence.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether experiencing childhood corporal punishment is linked to later perpetration of dating violence. STUDY DESIGN: Young adults (n = 758; 61% female; mean age of 20 years), originally recruited for a longitudinal study as 9th- and 10th-grade Texas high school students, were asked about their childhood experiences with corporal punishment and physical abuse, as well as current experiences with dating violence. A path model was used to determine whether childhood corporal punishment was related to recent perpetration of physical dating violence, while controlling for childh…

Group Membership Modulates the Neural Circuitry Underlying Third Party Punishment.

This research aims to explore the neural correlates involved in altruistic punishment, parochial altruism and anti-social punishment, using the Third-Party Punishment (TPP) game. In particular, this study considered these punishment behaviors in in-group vs. out-group game settings, to compare how people behave with members of their own national group and with members of another national group. The results showed that participants act altruistically to protect in-group members. This study indicates that norm violation in in-group (but not in out-group) settings results in increased activity in…

From punishment to education--juvenile delinquency in Romanian criminal law.

For centuries children were considered "mini-adults". Together with expressing the need to educate children and putting a stop to their integration in the work field from the earliest years the 19th century also displayed a new image of the child, which clearly separates him from the adults. In this paper the authors analyze the Romanian legislation addressing juvenile delinquency in criminal temporal evolution. On the one hand the minority age limits are sought and modulation of legislative provisions according to these, and on the other hand, types of penalties for minors are discussed. The

Justine effect: punishment of the unduly self-sacrificing cooperative individuals.

BACKGROUND: Allowing players to punish their opponents in Public Goods Game sustains cooperation within a group and thus brings advantage to the cooperative individuals. However, the possibility of punishment of the co-players can result in antisocial punishment, the punishment of those players who contribute the most in the group. To better understand why antisocial punishment exists, it must be determined who are the anti-social punishers and who are their primary targets. METHODS: For resolving these questions we increased the number of players in a group from usual four to twelve. Each gr…

Punishment of ethanol choice in group-housed male cynomolgus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: A common characteristic of individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) is that they continue to consume alcohol despite adverse consequences. A better understanding of the factors that influence this relative insensitivity to punishment may help identify novel treatments for AUD. In animal models, this characteristic can be studied by adding the bitter-tasting alkaloid, quinine, to an ethanol solution. In the present study, punishment of ethanol drinking was assessed in socially housed male cynomolgus monkeys to determine whether sensitivity to punishment is influenced by a monkey'…
