UNLABELLED: Approximately 80% of patients submitted to radiotherapy develop radiodermatitis. Photobiomodulation based on light-emitted diode (LED) is one of the therapeutic strategies for treating inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the photobiomodulation with two wavelengths, in an acute radiodermatitis animal model.
METHODS: Twenty rats were submitted to one radiotherapy session. After 15 days, the rats that developed radiodermatitis were divided into control groups, LED-630 nm, LED-850 nm, and LED-630 + 850 nm. The treatment regimen was one session lasting 10 minute…

The authors analyze the effectiveness of a collagen cicatrizant powder for use in treating radiodermatitis compared with extra fine hydrocolloidal dressings by evaluating skin lesions according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) intensity scale. As the same time, the authors evaluate the patient's opinion regarding the treatment he/she receives. This study was carried out in the Valladolid University Clinical Hospital's Department of Radiotherapy. This study showed that the Catrix brand dressing is more effective than hydrocolloidal dressings as a treatment of lesions caused by rad…

The discovery of the X-rays in November 1895 confronted medicine with new and undreamed possibilities for diagnosis and therapy. It was welcomed by the professionals with enthusiasm, and soon X-rays were used all around the globe. Gradually, with increasingly powerful equipment, unfavorable side effects were observed. The radiologists themselves were especially concerned, because they were exposed to the rays for hours, and in the beginning without any protection. Their hands were not seldom developing a chronic dermatitis, eventually leading by way of neoplastic transformation to death. Altho

The medical and nursing literature suggests a wide variety of pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches to treatment of acute radiation skin damages (erythema, dry and moist desquamation, ulceration), but no specific and standardized therapy. The incidence of radiodermatitis has decreased with mega-voltage instruments, but it can nevertheless influence the therapeutic program and impair quality of life of patients. A study has been conducted to evaluate the tolerability and effectiveness of a nonpharmacological remedy, a mixture of hydrophobic (stearic acid) and hydrophilic (propylene …

BACKGROUND: Radiodermatitis following invasive radiographic procedures has been reported recently in the literature, mainly after cardiac catheterization. Only two publications are related to transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), a recently introduced angiographic technique for achieving portal decompression.
CASE REPORTS: We report four cases of radiodermatitis following a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. A 63-year-old woman developed in 1997 a chronic radiodermatitis under the right scapula; a shunt was placed in 1992; from 1992 to 1997, she had a second transj…

We review three patients who developed chronic radiodermatitis subsequent to undergoing multiple percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties (PTCAs). All patients had had chronic ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and had undergone lengthy PTCA on several occasions. The skin eruption was characterized by an atrophic rectangular plaque on the left upper back, presenting as mottled hyper- and hypopigmentation with reticulate telangiectasia. Histologically, the eruption demonstrated epidermal atrophy, hyalinized and irregularly stained collagen, and telangiectasia of superficial vessels in the de…
