[Cranial asymmetries. Reflexions on plagiocephalies. Premature sutural synostosis or extracranial origin?].

The authors relate a clinical and radiological (X Ray and TDM tridimensional) study with an anthropological (dry skulls) study of plagiocephaly. The aim is to find with the aid of a physical examination, some anatomic parameters which permit to differentiate cranial asymmetry with coronal premature synostotic suture from functional deformation with extracranial outset. The term plagiocephaly is used to define forehead asymmetry. It is necessary to study orbital rim, nasal root, malar eminence, ear and chin mid point position. The morphology of the skull is important to look: frontal flattering

Automated segmentation refinement of small lung nodules in CT scans by local shape analysis.

One of the most important problems in the segmentation of lung nodules in CT imaging arises from possible attachments occurring between nodules and other lung structures, such as vessels or pleura. In this report, we address the problem of vessels attachments by proposing an automated correction method applied to an initial rough segmentation of the lung nodule. The method is based on a local shape analysis of the initial segmentation making use of 3-D geodesic distance map representations. The correction method has the advantage that it locally refines the nodule segmentation along recognized

Primal-dual convex optimization in large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping: LDDMM meets robust regularizers.

This paper proposes a method for primal-dual convex optimization in variational large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping problems formulated with robust regularizers and robust image similarity metrics. The method is based on Chambolle and Pock primal-dual algorithm for solving general convex optimization problems. Diagonal preconditioning is used to ensure the convergence of the algorithm to the global minimum. We consider three robust regularizers liable to provide acceptable results in diffeomorphic registration: Huber, V-Huber and total generalized variation. The Huber norm is used i

Effective registration-free dual-phase segmentation for pancreas and pancreatic mass via symmetrical selective feature integration.

Pancreatic masses present significant challenges in clinical management due to their diverse manifestations and inherent complexity. Dual-phase contrast-enhanced CT is essential for accurate diagnosis, yet widely adopted segmentation methods rely on image registration, which compromises both precision and efficiency. In this study, we introduce a novel architecture that utilizes a cross-attention mechanism for selective feature integration across different phases, achieving registration-free dual-phase segmentation of the pancreas and pancreatic masses. Our model incorporates a dual-path encod

Computer-based quantitative image texture analysis using multi-collinearity diagnosis in chest X-ray images.

Despite tremendous efforts devoted to the area, image texture analysis is still an open research field. This paper presents an algorithm and experimental results demonstrating the feasibility of developing automated tools to detect abnormal X-ray images based on tissue attenuation. Specifically, this work proposes using the variability characterised by singular values and conditional indices extracted from the singular value decomposition (SVD) as image texture features. In addition, the paper introduces a "tuning weight" parameter to consider the variability of the X-ray attenuation in tissue

Defect-adaptive landmark detection in pelvis CT images via personalized structure-aware learning.

Accurate localization of anatomical landmarks from pelvic CT images is crucial for preoperative planning in orthopedic procedures. However, existing automatic methods often underperform when facing defective bone structures, which are common in clinical scenarios involving trauma, resection, or severe degeneration. To address this challenge, we propose DADNet, a defect-adaptive detection network that incorporates personalized structural priors to achieve accurate and robust landmark detection in defective pelvis CT images. DADNet first constructs a structure-aware soft prior map that encodes t

Vision transformer-enabled chest CT analysis for enhanced tuberculosis diagnosis in clinical settings.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of illness and mortality worldwide, particularly in resource-constrained regions where timely diagnosis is critical for effective treatment. Chest computed tomography (CT) offers detailed visualization of lung structures and can reveal subtle abnormalities such as cavitations, consolidations, and nodular lesions that are often missed in chest radiographs. However, the scarcity of annotated TB datasets and the heterogeneity of disease manifestations present major challenges for developing robust computer-aided diagnostic systems. To address this, we pro

Image quality in CT thorax: effect of altering reconstruction algorithm and tube load.

Non-linear properties of iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms can alter image texture. We evaluated the effect of a model-based IR algorithm (advanced modelled iterative reconstruction; ADMIRE) and dose on computed tomography thorax image quality. Dual-source scanner data were acquired at 20, 45 and 65 reference mAs in 20 patients. Images reconstructed with filtered back projection (FBP) and ADMIRE Strengths 3-5 were assessed independently by six radiologists and analysed using an ordinal logistic regression model. For all image criteria studied, the effects of tube load 20 mAs and all ADM

Segment Like A Doctor: Learning reliable clinical thinking and experience for pancreas and pancreatic cancer segmentation.

Pancreatic cancer is a lethal invasive tumor with one of the worst prognosis. Accurate and reliable segmentation for pancreas and pancreatic cancer on computerized tomography (CT) images is vital in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Although certain deep learning-based techniques have been tentatively applied to this task, current performance of pancreatic cancer segmentation is far from meeting the clinical needs due to the tiny size, irregular shape and extremely uncertain boundary of the cancer. Besides, most of the existing studies are established on the black-box models which only learn t

Pathological Priors Inspired Network for Vertebral Osteophytes Recognition.

Automatic vertebral osteophyte recognition in Digital Radiography is of great importance for the early prediction of degenerative disease but is still a challenge because of the tiny size and high inter-class similarity between normal and osteophyte vertebrae. Meanwhile, common sampling strategies applied in Convolution Neural Network could cause detailed context loss. All of these could lead to an incorrect positioning predicament. In this paper, based on important pathological priors, we define a set of potential lesions of each vertebra and propose a novel Pathological Priors Inspired Netwo

Lung Nodule Segmentation and Recognition Algorithm Based on Multiposition U-Net.

Lung nodules are the main lesions of the lung, and conditions of the lung can be directly displayed through CT images. Due to the limited pixel number of lung nodules in the lung, doctors have the risk of missed detection and false detection in the detection process. In order to reduce doctors' work intensity and assist doctors to make accurate diagnosis, a lung nodule segmentation and recognition algorithm is proposed by simulating doctors' diagnosis process with computer intelligent methods. Firstly, the attention mechanism model is established to focus on the region of lung parenchyma. Then

The radiological diagnosis of bronchiectasis: what's in a name?

Diagnosis of bronchiectasis is usually made using chest computed tomography (CT) scan, the current gold standard method. A bronchiectatic airway can show abnormal widening and thickening of its airway wall. In addition, it can show an irregular wall and lack of tapering, and/or can be visible in the periphery of the lung. Its diagnosis is still largely expert based. More recently, it has become clear that airway dimensions on CT and therefore the diagnosis of bronchiectasis are highly dependent on lung volume. Hence, control of lung volume is required during CT acquisition to standardise the e
