Methods of cardiopulmonary support: a review for radiologists.

Physicians are generally aware of the use of bypass pumps during open heart surgery and of the intraaortic balloon pump in treatment of cardiogenic shock. In selected research centers, other advanced methods of cardiopulmonary support are being introduced. Some devices such as the total artificial heart fail clinical trials and disappear from use. Others, like some of the partial artificial hearts, improve outcomes and gain wider clinical use. Some devices temporarily support the circulation in patients recovering from acute circulatory collapse, whereas others provide longer-term circulatory

Emergence of radiologist 2.0 in the era of AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionize the healthcare industry, with Radiology experiencing substantial breakthroughs due to its inherently technical nature. With a concern for job displacement, AI is often perceived as a potential threat by radiologists. However, this paper outlines comprehensive ways through which radiologists with a proficiency in AI can be empowered to undertake critical responsibilities, positioning them as the "Radiologist 2.0" in the AI-driven modern era.

Haemato-radiology: the role of the radiologist at MDT.

Haemato-radiology represents a relatively newly emerging, vast, and complex area of diagnostic imaging. Its complexity arises from the multimodality nature of patient assessment, the multisystem presentation of haematological malignancies and their complications, and the volume of imaging required for diagnosis and follow-up of the fifth most common malignancy type in the United Kingdom. Decisive and accurate assessment of disease by radiologists is at the heart of the haemato-oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT) and therefore essential for providing optimal patient care. We hope to support r

Imaging of ureter: a primer for the emergency radiologist.

In this review article, we will discuss the gamut of abnormalities involving the ureters. In the emergency department, ureterolithiasis is the most common indication for imaging abdomen and pelvis. However, spectrum of ureteral abnormalities including congenital, infectious and inflammatory, primary and secondary ureteral malignancies, retroperitoneal fibrosis rare described in this article may be encountered. Thus, we will describe acute subacute as well as chronic conditions that may affect ureter. Knowledge of common, as well as rare entities and their imaging features, is of utmost importa

First-trimester emergencies: a radiologist's perspective.

The purpose of this article is to help the practitioner ensure early diagnosis and response to emergencies in the first trimester by reviewing anatomy of the developing embryo, highlighting the sonographic appearance of common first-trimester emergencies, and discussing key management pathways for treating emergent cases. First-trimester fetal development is a stepwise process that can be challenging to evaluate in the emergency department (ED) setting. This is due, in part, to the complex anatomy of early pregnancy, subtlety of the sonographic findings, and the fact that fewer than half of pa

Parathyroid ultrasonography: the evolving role of the radiologist.

Previously, radiologists played a limited role in the treatment of parathyroid disease, primary focusing on the preoperative localization of parathyroid lesions responsible for hyperparathyroidism. But, the widespread use of high-resolution ultrasound has lead to the increasing detection of parathyroid incidentalomas (PTIs). Consequently, radiologists may be required to differentiate PTIs from thyroid lesions, which is most reliably accomplished through the fine needle aspiration-parathyroid hormone analysis. Various nonsurgical treatment modalities for hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions hav

Acute gastrointestinal haemorrhage: the role of the radiologist.

Acute gastrointestinal (GI) haemorrhage is a frequent and potentially life threatening medical presentation, the management of which depends on more than one speciality. Upper GI haemorrhage is often treated by endoscopic methods, failing which radiological intervention or surgery are the alternative methods of treatment. Radiology is crucial both in the diagnosis and treatment of lower GI haemorrhage, where the role of endoscopy is limited by poor visibility. CT angiography is now the first line investigation of choice and catheter angiography is used as a prelude to intervention. Interventio

Inborn errors of metabolism for the diagnostic radiologist.

Inherited metabolic disorders are becoming more important with the increasing availability of diagnostic methods and therapies for these conditions. The radiologist has become an important link in making the diagnosis or collaborating with the specialist centre to diagnose these disorders and monitor effects of therapy. The modes of presentation, disease-specific groups, classic radiological features and investigations are explored in this article to try and give the general radiologist some crucial background knowledge. The following presentations are covered: acute intoxication, hypoglycaemi

Postprocedure clinical management for the interventional radiologist.

Interventional procedures for oncology patients are being used more frequently in the front line and palliative setting. It is important that interventional radiologists familiarize themselves with some of the frequently encountered symptoms and potential complications and develop guidelines to help manage and sometimes prevent these complications from occurring. Unfortunately, there is not much data to support various supportive measures specifically for the post-procedural patient. However, by extrapolating the information available for the management of systemic chemotherapy patients, as we

Imaging the neonatal heart--essentials for the radiologist.

Modern radiological imaging provides precise diagnosis in congenital heart disease (CHD). The most important and readily available radiological examination is still chest radiography. The diagnostically most important imaging method is echocardiography. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography have gained much ground over the more invasive cardiac catheter angiography, which is still needed in more complex conditions and for interventional procedures, which are performed more frequently. This article is focused on imaging of the neonatal heart. Basically, characteristics of the chest

The role of the interventional radiologist. Transjugular procedures.

The transjugular route provides a convenient and safe approach for the interventional radiologist to access the hepatic parenchyma and hepatic vascular structures. The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt has revolutionized the management of the complications of portal hypertension, allowing the establishment of a side-to-side shunt without recourse to surgery and general anesthesia. On a smaller scale, the transjugular approach to obtaining a liver biopsy has also proven its worth in allowing the histologic diagnosis and staging of liver disease in patients in whom such information i

Urologic oncologic emergencies: a radiologist's guide.

Urologic oncologic emergencies represent a relatively narrow yet diverse group of critical conditions that require prompt recognition and intervention to prevent potentially life-threatening complications. These oncologic emergencies may arise as direct consequences of a malignancy, including local invasion, or as sequelae of surgical or therapeutic interventions. Common urologic emergencies include malignant obstructive uropathy or ureteral obstruction, which may lead to urosepsis or acute kidney injury; large volume hematuria and hemorrhagic cystitis, which both can result in substantial blo

Pediatric thyroid ultrasound: a radiologist's checklist.

Ultrasonography (US) is the imaging method of choice for evaluating the pediatric thyroid gland, complemented by scintigraphy and thyroid function tests, especially when evaluating children with suspected congenital hypothyroidism, goiter, infectious or autoimmune diseases, or neoplasm. Diagnostic considerations in newborns with congenital hypothyroidism mainly include dysgenesis, dyshormonogenesis, transient hypothyroidism and central (hypophyseal) hypothyroidism. The midline of the neck should be scrutinized for thyroid tissue from the floor of the mouth to the thoracic inlet. Cystic and ech
